Grady brothers make grade at Public Links
Jim rallies with 68 to join Pat in match-play field

ACES WILD
Zach Fischer had the shot of the day Tuesday when he carded a hole-in-one on No. 8, a 208-yard par-3.
The University of Texas- Arlington sophomore used 7-iron for the ace en route to a 2-under 69. But it wasn't enough to reach match play as his first-round 80 pushed him to 7-over 149.
HIT THE ROAD
Kurt Lorenzen waited 13 years for the chance to play in his first U.S. Amateur Public Links. Though he shot 77-77 and failed to advance, the 48-year-old Olathe, Kan., resident had no regrets.
"It was a blast. It was worth every minute," said Lorenzen, who serves as director over 800 other engineers at Honeywell's Federal Manufacturing and Technology plant in Kansas City, Mo. "They just hit the ball so much farther than I did."
He's not complaining. After all, before hip replacement surgery in 2001, he was in so much pain, he had to pull his cart backward to get around a golf course. Less than two months after surgery, he was back, shooting even par in his first 18-hole round.
MOVING UP
Colorado State's Riley Arp played himself into good position for the match-play rounds with a 4-under 67, giving him a 2-under 140 total for 36 holes.
"I'm still struggling a little bit with my irons, so I decided to play a cut shot," he said. "I used to play a nice little draw. By the sixth or seventh hole, I said the heck with it, play the cut."
He chipped in for birdie on No 10, his first hole, and added birdies at Nos. 18, 1, 3 and 6, with a three-putt bogey on the par-5 12th.
Four-putting back-to-back greens can make one a little crazy.
Which might explain why former University of Colorado standout Jim Grady could be found running the trails around Broomfield about midnight Monday.
"I couldn't sleep, so I ran myself so I could sleep," said Grady, who estimated he logged about six miles.
It worked.
The 10K, coupled with a change to a new Craz-E Ping putter, had him back on his game Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links at Murphy Creek.
After shooting an opening- round 6-over 77, Grady shot a 3-under 68 to join younger brother Pat in the match-play portion of the weeklong tournament.
Jim Grady will face Colorado State's Riley Arp (140) at 8:18 a.m. today, while CU senior Pat Grady (143) will play Kentucky's Brandon Berry in a lower-bracket match at 11:45 a.m.
The cut was at 5-over 147, with 10 players in a playoff Tuesday night for the 64th spot.
All were chasing Aaron Goldberg, who earned medalist honors with a 10-under 132, one shot ahead of the world's No. 1- ranked amateur, Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif.
The difference was Fowler's 10-foot missed birdie putt on No. 18.
"I was trying to give Aaron a run for his money, but he played two solid rounds," Fowler said. "I'm playing well. Hopefully, I got all my bad putting out."
Fowler, who finished tied for 60th at the U.S. Open and was part of the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team, estimated he three- putted seven greens.
Walker Cup teammate Billy Horschel, who finished at 140, didn't feel any better about his putting on the firm greens.
"All that matters is getting in," said Horschel, decked out in a bright orange Florida Gators shirt.
Goldberg, whose 23rd birthday is Saturday, agreed.
"There are six matches you've got to win," he said. "Once it starts, it doesn't matter if you're medalist or the 64th seed."
He thought back to last year when eventual champion Colt Knost finished the first two rounds as the 45th seed.
Goldberg helped himself Tuesday with eagle on No. 13, holing out from 230 yards with a 5-iron.
"Anytime the ball goes in from that far away, there's a little bit of luck involved," he said.
Fowler got his eagle on No. 10, holing out from 116 yards with a 54-degree wedge.
"That definitely gets you going," said Fowler, dressed in large shades and an even larger silver "57" belt buckle.
He also got his wish, getting in the opposite bracket from Walker Cup teammate Horschel.
"We talked about it early in the week, about being in the finals together. That would be something special," Horschel said. "I'm sure we would have a lot of fun."
ZAREMBA MOVES ON: Pueblo West's Zach Zaremba challenged for medalist honors, getting to 9 under only to bogey Nos. 13 and 14 - missing a 1-foot putt on the latter.
There was nothing wrong with his putting on No. 9 as he drove the green on the 348-yard par 4, then rolled in a 20-footer for eagle. He birdied Nos. 4, 6 and 12 to finish third at 7-under 135.
"It's a good feeling," Zaremba said.
Wyoming teammate Gabriel Maier shot 75-79 and failed to advance.
