According to a report in the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Peter Forsberg has a muscle problem in his right foot that has been the root of his health troubles in recent seasons, and he will need several months of rehabilitation for a chance to salvage his career.

It doesn't appear Peter Forsberg will be resuming his NHL career for a while, if at all.

According to a report in the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Forsberg has a muscle problem in his right foot that has been the root of his health troubles in recent seasons and he will need several months of rehabilitation for a chance to salvage his career.

Forsberg became an unrestricted free agent July 1 and would prefer to re-sign with the Avalanche if he's healthy, but the report quoted him as saying he doubts he would be ready for training camp in September.

Forsberg's Swedish doctor, Bertil Romanus, has mapped out a rehabilitation program that is expected to take several months.

Forsberg, who turns 35 on Sunday, has started the program and said he likely wouldn't be available to play before Christmas.

A muscle on one side of Forsberg's foot doesn't work normally because a muscle on the other side has caused an imbalance.

Forsberg told the newspaper he can walk and even run without a problem but has trouble when he puts on a skate.

If the latest program doesn't work, Forsberg told the newspaper, "Then I'm happy with the career I've had."

Avalanche vice president Jean Martineau said Sunday he wasn't aware of the report.

Forsberg's agent, Don Baizley, couldn't be reached for comment.

Forsberg signed with the Avalanche on Feb. 25 and played in nine of the final 16 regular-season games, finishing with one goal and 13 assists.

He was able to play in seven of the Avalanche's 10 playoff games and had one goal and four assists.

Peter The Great. When he came back last year it did seem like his last charge and anything else would just be great for the fans to watch. He has put his body through alot for the game of hockey and will be remembered as one of the best skill players to touch a puck. Along with his name down in Avalanche history forever. Seems like the dawn of a new era is nearing.

I suppose this means there is a slim chance he could join the team later in the season.

Since the Avs's strategy seems to be letting their best players go, I can't imagine they won't have a few million in reserve to sign him.

The news from the past 30 days really, really, makes me wonder why I keep my tickets.

Yes, this is one of the news I've been waiting for. And sadly, it looks dimmer for Forsberg and the Avalanche. They have let go a lot of great players before, the young ones which they should have groomed.. those that became good players somewhere else.

This is where I have a distinct feeling that money not spent during the FA frenzy may come into use during the trading deadline; of course that will never be the answer in regards to Peter Forsberg, because he can never really be replaced by another free agent or a trading deadline acquisition. The job he did in 2001, and then not be able to play in the Cup Finals because of a spleenectomy, that's the type of character this team needs in the draft and when landing other players to don the Aves sweater. The talent will never be matched. If this is truly the end, then thank you so much Peter! ON the outside chance that you can make it back, I hope it is with us and not another team. I'll take my chances with you again.
