Right hander Ryan Speier has rejoined the Rockies.

Numbers game

2 runs allowed in two innings on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts for left-handed pitcher Christian Friedrich, the Rockies' first-round draft choice, in his pro debut for short-season Class A Tri-City on Thursday at Everett.

He said it

"When I was looking at the (candidates) for the All-Star team, I had things spread out on my desk. It was like when I was a kid and would watch the All-Star Game. I would have all the baseball cards laid out."

Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager, on filling out the National League All-Star roster.

Right-hander Ryan Speier is back with the Rockies for the third time this season. Speier joined the team Friday, replacing left-hander Cedrick Bowers, who had a 13.50 ERA in five games.

"If I was pitching lights out, they would keep me," Speier said. "I'm not giving them a reason to keep me."

Speier is 1-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 25 appearances with the Rockies. He is the easy pitcher to send down, because he has an option, meaning he does not have to be put though waivers.

Adios

Left-hander Josh Newman, who was up with the Rockies twice this season, was claimed on waivers by Kansas City. He was taken off the 40-man roster to create a spot for second baseman Jayson Nix, who was called up last week. Newman was assigned to the Royals' Triple-A Omaha affiliate. He had a 9.35 ERA in eight games with the Rockies but was 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 20 games at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Etc.

Matt Holliday went 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his hitting streak at 14 games, equaling Garrett Atkins for the team's longest this season. Atkins had a 14-game streak in April. . . . Right- hander Greg Reynolds returned to the Triple-A Colorado Springs rotation Thursday, allowing two runs, one earned, in six innings. He had a no-decision in the Sky Sox's 5-2 loss to Sacramento. . . . The Rockies' record in day games is 8-19, worst in the NL. The game today starts at 3:55 p.m. EDT, which qualifies as a day game. . . . Double-A Tulsa center fielder Dexter Fowler and right-handed relievers Ryan Mattheus and Casey Weathers will fly to New York today to take part in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. It's the first time the Rockies have had three players in the Futures Game, which is staged in conjunction with the All-Star Game. . . . Having missed 58 games earlier this season because of a strained right shoulder, right-hander Luis Vizcaino will fail to make 70 appearances for only the second time in seven seasons. His 2 1/3-inning appearance Thursday was his longest since June 29, 2005, when he also went 2 1/3 innings for the White Sox against Detroit.
