E-mails likely not from police officer

The person behind e-mails and fliers threatening that demonstrators would be beaten during next month's Democratic National Convention does not appear to be a police officer, Denver authorities and a local publication said Thursday.

Now, authorities believe the e-mails were a hoax after the weekly newspaper Westword wrote that it had spoken with the author.

Representatives of Denver Cop Watch and Re-create '68 held a new conference Thursday morning at the building of the city's independent monitor to disclose that they had been the recipients of the e-mails.

However, Evan Herzoff, a Denver Cop Watch volunteer, acknowledged that about an hour before the news conference he was approached by a Westword reporter, who disclosed that he had interviewed the person responsible for sending the e-mails. The reporter described the source of the fliers as a local artist, Herzoff said.

An article in the weekly publication's Web site confirmed that account.

I could see Glenn and R68 pulling that kind of garbage. Why aren't we a citizens completely condeming these groups that openly say they are going to cause trouble? All I can say is they better watch out if they are blocking the street while I'm driving to work!
