U.S. Olympic distance runner Kara Goucher heads a class of nine inductees this fall into the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame - a group that also includes football players Dave Logan and Alfred Williams, late football coach Dal Ward and baseball standout John Stearns.
A trio of pioneer black athletes at CU - Claude Walton, Frank Clarke and Billy Lewis - are also set for induction, as is former Buffaloes sprinter Dan Campbell.
Goucher, who ran at CU as Kara Grgas-Wheeler, qualified last weekend for the Beijing Olympics by winning the 5,000-meter run and placing second in the 10,000 at the U.S. Olympic trials.
Logan was a successful receiver with the Cleveland Browns before becoming a local broadcaster and high school football coach.
Stearns was a defensive back at CU before becoming a major league catcher with the New York Mets.
Defensive end Williams excelled on Super Bowl-winning teams with the Broncos.
Ward steered CU's transition into the then-Big Seven Conference in 1948. The school's athletic center bears his name.
Clark and Lewis were the first black athletes on CU's football and basketball teams. Walton, CU's first black varsity athlete, was an All-American discus thrower in 1936.
COUNTING ON BROWN Colorado State athlete Zen Brown began defense of his Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship title Tuesday with a 2-and-1 victory against Columbine Valley golfer Brian Nichols at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club in Castle Rock.
Second-seeded Devin Schreiner (Durango) won 5 and 4 against Rick Ewing (Pueblo West) and third-seeded Luke Symons (Aurora) won 4 and 3 against Kyle Beard (Parker).
Lakewood resident Steve Irwin also won 2 and 1 against Broomfield golfer Steve Ziegler.
* D'Evelyn High School athlete John Ahern, Rock Canyon High School athlete Brendan Connolly, Fairview High School athlete Brennan Dolan and Douglas County High School athlete Cody Kent have been named to the Colorado team at the Boys Junior Americas Cup golf tournament later this month in Vancouver, Wash.
