REGIONAL SCENE: Avalanche adds Barr as assistant coach

The Avalanche hired Dave Barr as an assistant to coach Tony Granato on Wednesday, rounding out the coaching staff.
Barr, 47, served as general manager and coach for the past four seasons with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League.
LEVIS UNPROTECTED Colorado Mammoth goaltender Chris Levis is among the notable unprotected players going into the National Lacrosse League's expansion draft July 24. The Boston Blazers will choose an unprotected player from each of the league's other 12 clubs.
BROWN, TOLAN ADVANCE Colorado State golfer Zen Brown made the quarterfinals to continue defense of his title in the 108th Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club in Castle Rock.
Brown, who beat Jacob Lestishen and Dan Kleckner 1-up, faces CU's Derek Tolan, who beat Matthew Brunk 1-up to reach the quarterfinals.
On Wednesday, Brown also was named to the Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar team.
* Littleton High School graduate Becca Huffer carded a second-round 69 at the Colorado Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Buffalo Run Golf Course.
Huffer, who maintained the lead, made eight birdies.
Littleton's Ashley Tait shot 67, three shots off the lead with Kasey Claussen of Collindale Golf Course.
ELWAY EARNS AWARD John Elway will receive the Brodie Award, presented to an individual who excelled in his professional sport and made a successful crossover into golf, at the American Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament, which begins Friday in Lake Tahoe, Nev.
TRACK REOPENS Post Time Greyhound Park in Colorado Springs reopened Wednesday, ending an eight-day closure after which the Colorado Racing Commission approved a license for the park to remain open as an off-track betting facility. Under the new agreement, Post Time no longer will be allowed to simulcast greyhound races.
