Atlanta-based golfers Bill Evans and Craig Forney are playing 50 rounds of golf in 50 states in 50 days in hopes of raising $1 million for melanoma, breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Their tour began June 9 in Vermont and will culminate in Hawaii on July 22.
COLORADO STOP: Evans and Forney will visit the Centennial State on Monday, when they tee off at Wellshire Golf Course at 6 a.m. The tandem chose courses based on major cities and proximity to major highways, often times Google- searching particular areas. "We've played anywhere from high-end courses to economically challenged municipal courses," Forney said. "It's fitting because cancer doesn't afflict any certain economic group, race or gender."
THE CAUSE: Evans and Forney chose the cancers they did based on past experience. An aunt of Evans died because of breast cancer and has a friend currently stricken by melanoma.
GET INVOLVED: Individuals may donate or sponsor Evans and Forney through their Web site, the50in50.com. One sponsor is donating $100 per birdie; others are donating smaller amounts, some as little as $5 per birdie. At their Amarillo, Texas, stop on Wednesday, they combined for six birdies to help bolster the pot.
HOW'S IT GOING? So far, Evans and Forney have held up well after having completed about 60 percent of their journey. "More than it being tiring, we've had a few bugs along the way," Forney said. "Everyone has fought off an illness. But fatigue-wise, we're fine."
MEMORABLE: While a different state each day can be somewhat of a blur, a few courses have stood out as gems. Evans and Forney particularly enjoyed Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn., and Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo, N.D., where, Forney said, the grass had "Augusta-like quality."
