Ex-Buff Roby will play for Nets in summer league

With Richard Roby’s broken hand healing well, he has agreed to sign with New Jersey for the Rocky Mountain Revue later this month in Salt Lake City.
The shooting guard went undrafted last month out of the University of Colorado. Some believe he would have been a second-round pick had he not broken his right (shooting) hand May 29 at the Orlando pre-draft camp.
“You look at New Jersey and they hardly have any wings under contract,’’ Roby’s agent, Chris Emens, said Tuesday. “I think it’s a good fit.’’
Emens said Roby will sign a contract only for the Rocky Mountain Revue, which runs July 18-25. After the event, Roby would be free to sign with any NBA team for next season.
Because Roby is healing so well, Emens said there still remains a chance Roby could sign with a team for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which runs July 11-20. It is not uncommon a free agent plays with different teams in different summer leagues.
Roby averaged 17.9 points and shot 38.2 percent from three-point range last season for the Buffaloes.
Roby is the half brother of Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin, who played for the Nets from 2000 to 2004.
VAN EXEL BACK: Nick Van Exel once asked to be traded from the Nuggets.
Now, he’s back.
Van Exel, who played for Denver from 1998 to 2002, will be a coach for the Nuggets during the NBA Summer League, which runs July 11-20 in Las Vegas. The appointment of Van Exel, looking to get into coaching after playing in the NBA from 1993 to 2006, is for the summer only.
In December 2001, Van Exel asked to be traded from the Nuggets. He got his wish when he was shipped to Dallas in February 2002.
Van Exel, a 6-foot-1 guard, averaged 17.7 points during his 3 1/2 Nuggets seasons. His career average was 14.4, which included an appearance in the 1998 All-Star Game.
