REGIONAL SCENE: CU athletes qualify for CGA match play

Dressed sharp Models from Donna Baldwin Talent show off a third uniform the Colorado Rapids will use for international exhibition matches, beginning Wednesday night against UANL Tigres - a Mexican first-division team - at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Durango resident Devin Schreiner joined University of Colorado teammates Luke Symons and Jim Grady in taking the top three available seeds Monday in qualifying for the Colorado Golf Association's Match Play Championship at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club in Castle Rock.
Defending champion Zen Brown, a Colorado State athlete, holds the top seed for the tournament, which begins today.
Schreiner, Symons and Grady each shot a 67 in qualifying Monday. Schreiner took the second seed for the tournament, Symons is seeded third and Grady fourth.
ON THE RUN Boulder runner Jason Simpson won the Solomon Trespass Challenge 10-mile race Sunday in Nederland, finishing in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 57 seconds.
Nederland resident Kathy Butler won the women's race in 1:09:29.
Nederland resident Melody Fairchild won the women's 5.4-mile race in 36:56, and Lakewood resident Greg Reindl won the men's race in 30:59.
BOULDER OPEN Boulder resident Mark Buzek won 6-4, 6-2 against Lakewood's Ryan McGinley in the first round of men's open singles in the Babolat Boulder Open tennis tournament on Sunday.
Conor Holton-Burke (Boulder), Wes Blakeslee (Littleton), Andrew Majxner (Denver), Takuma Mitsuhashi (Boulder) and Chris Minihan (Fort Collins) also won matches.
CUTTING IT AT BANDIMERE Arvada resident Mitch Mustard won the Super Comp race Friday at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison.
Amada Caudill (Westminster, Top Street), Kris Whitfield (Littleton, Super Gas), Tim Schell (Arvada, Super Street), Jeffrey Cox (Elizabeth, King Street) and Bri Bandimere (Lakewood, Junior Shootout) also won races.
ARNOLD COMMITS ThunderRidge High School point guard Dave Arnold has given a verbal commitment to play men's basketball at the University of San Francisco.
PORTER QUALIFIES Parker resident Monroe Porter is one of three national finalists in the division for boys ages 10-11 in the U.S. Junior Olympic Skills competition, set for July 24-27 in Chicago.
The finalists will compete in four fundamental sports - basketball, soccer, tennis and track - for the honor of champion of their sport.
