Obama campaign to reveal site of acceptance speech

Officials with the Barack Obama campaign will announce today where he will give his nomination speech at the Democratic National Convention - with at least one report saying the Invesco Field option is a "done deal."

More modestly, Obama campaign spokesman Nick Shapiro said today's announcement would be "related to the nomination speech."

The chatter about Obama spending the final night of the convention at Invesco Field instead of the Pepsi Center began last week when the rumor was floated and nobody inside the Obama campaign knocked it down. Since then, it's gathered steam, with The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder saying it will happen as well.

Mayor John Hickenlooper said the city would accommodate Obama if that's where he wants to give his speech.

"Obviously it will require a great deal of work and effort," Hickenlooper said. "But it's certainly not impossible."

Hickenlooper said, however, it would be historic in nature.

"From the point of view of the city of Denver, if the Obama team were to request us to go in this direction, we would move heaven and earth because it would be a historic moment," he said.

There is precedent for moving the nominating speech to an outdoor venue - most notably in 1960 when John F. Kennedy made his speech at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The move from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field would allow more people to witness the speech. Invesco Field seats about 76,000 people, the Pepsi Center only about 20,000.

Officials with the Democratic National Convention Committee would not speculate.

I just recommended removal of that post as offensive. I hope others will join me. We ought to be able to debate politics and politicians without some idiot suggesting assassins as role models.
