A brother and sister from Idaho were hit by lightning Sunday while hiking with their family on the American Lake trail south of Aspen, the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office reported.

The family of five were about 1.5 miles up the trail when the lightning hit shortly after 2 p.m., deputies said.

The bolt hit a 15-year-old girl and her 17-year-old brother. Witnesses reported that the girl was unconscious and needed CPR. Her brother suffered burns to the bottoms of his feet.

The youngsters were taken to Aspen Valley Hospital. Their conditions were not available.

Nice comment "happymike44". I have been reading the RMN blogs for about 4 months and just recently signed up to be able to post. I was hesitant and still am hesitant about posting - due to the fact I find that most of the people who post tend to act their shoe size and not their age. Mr. "happymike44" you have posted a lot of mature posts however this one is just like the rest of the majority. I know you can do better!!!! My prayers and hope of full recovery goes out to the family and friends of these two teenagers.

Sorry to hear kids got hurt. I'd like to see a follow up and hopefully hear the 15 year old girl will completely recover.

I hike at various times of day with my dogs.

The only bad thing that ever happened(my fault), I went out at 5:30pm on memorial day week-end and a mtn lion got one of my dogs.

Having been struck by lighting I believe I know what these two young people face from a medical perspective now and in the future. I hope the RMN will continue to follow this story and report on the two young individuals and the family. These people from Idaho desire all the support that Colorado can offer!
