"It helps the bench but I do cringe. I'm not looking to send my ace up to hit, run the bases and slide."
Hurdle, on right-hander Aaron Cook, who is hitting .286 overall and is 2-for-3 as a pinch hitter.
Left-handed pitcher Mark Redman, 34, didn't balk when the Rockies sent him to Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier this season. He didn't squawk when Glendon Rusch was called up a month later or when Jorge De La Rosa got a second chance in the rotation.
Redman just kept pitching, working to get better. And he did. The reward came when he was called up this week, and pitched six strong innings Thursday.
"He was confident he would be back," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I think he cares for the organization, and I think he trusted us when we told him if the opportunity presented itself he could be back here. He stuck with it because he believed in his talent."
TRADE TALK
Florida has shown initial interest in Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba, and center fielders Willy Taveras and Scott Podsednik. With the emergence of Chris Iannetta this year, the Rockies would listen to offers for Torrealba, who is signed through next year. With Taveras, Podsednik and Ryan Spilborghs at the major league level and Cory Sullivan at Colorado Springs, the Rockies have a surplus in center field.
St. Louis, meanwhile, is asking around about right-hander Matt Herges to provide a veteran influence in the Cardinals bullpen.
ETC.
The Marlins set a major league record with their 262nd game without a complete game. Washington ended a 261-game streak on May 31 this season. . . . Center fielder Willy Taveras, sidelined with a sore left quadriceps, showed progress Friday. "He did some sprint work, strides, quick agility work out there and felt good," trainer Keith Dugger said. "He didn't have any discomfort." . . . Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla, second in the National League with 23 home runs, on Friday missed his sixth consecutive game because of a sprained ankle. "He hit in the batting cage inside," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He didn't do any running. I'd like to go another day without using him. You have to run if you hit the ball." . . . Official scorer Dave Plati pointed out that 11 of the 12 pitchers who appeared in the Rockies' 6-5, 11-inning victory over Florida on Thursday were in line for either a win or loss at some point, including Matt Herges, who was in line to be the losing pitcher until the Rockies rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 11th. The lone exception was Rockies right-hander Manny Corpas. . . . While first baseman Joe Koshansky, who was called up Friday, will decline his selection to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, two other Colorado Springs Sky Sox were also selected - infielder Christian Colonel and outfielder Seth Smith.

you know, as bad as the 1st half has been, if I'm the Rockies, I'm buying, not selling. Imean, Torreabla, maybe; posednik, absolutely. herges? no freaking way. they should be adding a big arm or two to the bullpen, not unloading dependable ones.
the team is 7 games out and every other team in the division is either struggling, free-falling or just plain disappointing. Rocks have just as much chance to finish 1st as last... why not go for it? Going for it now makes tremendous sense given that Holliday may be a distant memory after next year.
Ian Stewart and one of the shortstops not named Tulowitzki for C.C.Sabathia. if their rotation becomes: Sabathia, Cook, Francis, Jimenez, and X, they're going to be the favorites to win the division and do some damage in October... even considering how deep a hole they've dug so far.

Sabathia would be a nice addition, but where can we find $11 Million to pay him?
Herges hasn't been all that reliable this year too.

Why even waste your time with comments as stupid as trading for Sabathia? That is so ridiculous. Welcome to reality.
