Rockies put Tulo on DL, demote Reynolds

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was placed on the disabled list Saturday, the third key player to be sidelined in five days, and the team sent right-handed pitcher Greg Reynolds to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The Rockies called outfielder Seth Smith and left-handed pitcher Glendon Rusch from the Sky Sox.

Tulowitzki required surgery after slamming a bat that shattered and splintered his hand. The emotional reaction came after he was taken out of Friday's 18-17 win against Florida. He will be out an unspecified time.

Tulowitzki being placed on the disabled list came one day after first baseman Todd Helton was placed on the DL because of lower-back inflammation and three days after left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis was put on the DL because of left shoulder inflammation.

Clint Barmes will assume the bulk of the playing time at shortstop in Tulowitzki's absence, with Jeff Baker and Omar Quintanilla expected to fill in at second base.

Earlier this season, Tulowitzki missed six weeks with a torn tendon in his left quadriceps.

Reynolds, the Rockies' first-round pick out of Stanford University two years ago, on Friday retired only four of the 14 batters he faced and gave up seven runs.

Francis... Helton... Tulo... Putting underperforming players on the DL seems to be the MO for the Rockies this year, doesn't it?

Is there any reason they can't put Clint Hurdle on the DL?

Child like reaction to frustration, Tulo you should be ashamed. You let your team mates down with stupid behavior like this, slump or not! grow up kid.

Tulo,if I was hitting .160 on my high school team,I would expect to be taken out of a game.Any player in the majors, hitting as poorly as you, would be back in triple A trying to work their way back up.If the Rocks had not caught lightning in a bottle last year, you would have already been down there without a monster contract.

Tulo's having a tough year but he's worth that contract. I love the guy. A great talent. In the meantime it's for the best Tulo, Helton, and Francis are on the DL as they were all struggling a bit and this will open up chances for other guys. We have a deep ball club, except for starting pitching. Until we have a solid starting rotation, we'll continue to struggle. The guys in the bullpen rock. As for you Hurdle haters, what's your beef? Hurdle's a helluva manager and the perfect fit for the Rockies.

Highcountry, take away the last 30 days of 07 and tell me what Hurdle has accomplished. He is such a players manager,he fails to make the hard decisions when needed. His game strategy is horrible,if we don't hit the ball over the fence we get nothing. He still plays Coors Field the way it played 3 or 4 years ago.I'd love to have him as my neighbor,he's a great guy.But he is not a quality major league manager. You know as well as I do,if the Rocks don't go crazy at the end of the year(07)he would have been gone the way this team started out in 08.

Tulo slams the bat, it shatters, gives him 16 stitches and a trip to the DL?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?! OK, in an ideal world no one gets aggravated enough to slam the bat, but there's a reason many good players are caught in unflattering displays of emotion: they're competitive, that's what makes them tick.

As for Tulo...Maybe he should just wait it out there on the DL...Doesn't appear to be his year at the plate...

Did anyone see if Griese's dog was in the vicinity?
