Police and fire officials closed an illegal fireworks operation Friday in Lakewood.

Cindy Matthews, the spokeswoman for West Metro Fire Protection District, said officers seized about 3,000 pounds of explosives from a U-Haul truck parked at a duplex at 1044 S. Yarrow St.

Additional fireworks were inside the duplex and in a garage, Matthews said.

Items included "professional-size explosives" of the kind used at public displays Friday night, Matthews said.

Residents were evacuated from 10 homes for about 21/2 hours during the early evening while officials removed the fireworks.

Tipsters told authorities that as many as three trucks had made deliveries to the duplex in recent days.

No one has been arrested, Matthews said. Officers had identified several persons of interest but were conducting interviews.

Well lets see these guys really did a great job.
Keeping these explosives off the street and the fire threat down.
Now to prosecute the whole group and nip this sort of thing in the bud.

Party poopers. My snappers were pretty boring last night. We need some rational reasoning with fireworks next year. We can keep the big stuff off limits, but c'mon - no sparklers or ground fireworks? What a joke.

I ask responsible, 4th of July loving citizens of Colorado, to take charge and demand our city leaders look at what we are trying to accomplish with banning even a sparkler (nobody really knows or agrees), and demand some reasonable arrangements for next year.

At least you didn't get a huge fine ..or annoyed neighbors calling the police on you. Sometimes it aint worth the hassle.

Biggest problem with fireworks-people shoot them off 5 days before the 4th and 5 or 6 after the holliday.Nothing like being awaken at 2:30am to some clown who has no respect for his or her neighbors.I truly love the holliday, but have mixed feelings on how some celebrate it.
