Employees from each department at the Brown Palace help raise the American flag in the hotel atrium Thursday. The flag is believed to have hung in the hotel as early as the 1940s. It was taken down in 1996, but is being rehung in advance of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Aug. 25-29, at the Pepsi Center.
Fixin' to find something to do with the family the Fourth? Here are a few suggestions:
* Colorado Rapids: Trust us on this: The post-game fireworks are spectacular. The location of Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City means the team can shoot off rockets that don't have to conform to the size restrictions that are common for other fireworks displays. Family fest starts at 5 p.m., with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Standing room tickets remain.
* Four Mile Park: Festivities will include visits from Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Uncle Sam; a reading of the Declaration of Independence; and performances by the Denver Concert Band and other area musicians. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission, $4 to $7.
* Cherry Creek Arts Festival: Admission is free to this annual arts extravaganza. A fireworks show is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
