Could the Nuggets end up replacing one Anthony with another?

Two sources close to the situation said Thursday the Nuggets aren't immediately targeting re-signing free-agent point guard Anthony Carter. One of the sources said Anthony Johnson is another free-agent point the Nuggets are eyeing as a possible replacement.

But the belief is the Nuggets, deep into the luxury tax, might not make a quick move on a point guard when the signing period starts Wednesday. If they go the free-agent route, they might wait until prices go down.

The Nuggets already are known to be looking at free- agent point guards Jannero Pargo, who is 6-foot-1, and 6-2 Carlos Arroyo. Johnson is 6-3 with long arms and could give the Nuggets some much-needed size at the point.

Johnson, 33, made $2.86 million last season, finishing with Sacramento after a February trade from Atlanta. He averaged 5.6 points and 3.8 assists for the season and has career marks of 5.7 points and 2.9 assists.

Other teams said to be interested in Johnson include Cleveland, New York, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix and Utah.

Carter took over as the Nuggets' starting point last season because of Chucky Atkins being injured. Atkins has vowed to be next season's starter, but the Nuggets need depth at the position regardless.

Carter averaged 7.8 points and 5.5 assists during a surprising regular season. But he was benched in the playoffs.

Carter said Thursday afternoon he hadn't heard anything from the Nuggets since free agency began Tuesday. Carter was asked if he felt they would have contacted him by then if he was a prime candidate to re-sign, "Yeah, I guess," he said. "But it's not a big deal. Everything will take care of itself (in free agency)."

Meanwhile, teams are playing a waiting game regarding Nuggets restricted free-agent guard J.R. Smith. Teams considering an offer are likely waiting to see where Clippers marquee free agents Elton Brand and Corey Maggette land.

For instance, San Antonio has offered Maggette its full midlevel exception. If that doesn't work out, the Spurs could look at Smith.

Ok the Nuggets have to get the "point". If Karl stays a 1 guard is needed. Look at this. When K-mart had his best year who was the 1 guard, J-kid, AI had his best year who, Eric snow(decent) Nene had his best year, A. miller, Camby, A. Miller and Mark Jackon. Get the point. Let's say Mello and the possiablties:

    1. K. Hinrich - bulls

Now here are two sleepers to keep a eye on

    1. M williams - Nets
    2. A.Law - Hawks

Hey it's a start. Paul and D. willims had to start somewhere, right

    Not Pargo, please..... !!!!!

He is so very inconsistent. We're better off with Carter.

I like the idea of a Hinrich, Camby trade.
With Rose there is no room for Hinrich, and he is too expensive to warm the bench.

Lets face it despite Camby being the defensive player of the year, we could use Hinrich.
A healthy Nene, Mello, and Kmart in the front court and A.I., Hinrich in the back, and Smith and Klieza off the bench.
    Thats a team

Anthony Carter deserves a look at point guard next season. Why is Chucky Atkins even part of the conversation??

Find a way to keep Camby and please find a way to dump K-Mart (what an appropriate nickname -- he has K-Mart level skills)and Nene!! Isn't there some team outthere stupid enough to take one of these duds? Are the Nuggets really the dumbest front office in the NBA?? Maybe so.

Why would the Hawks let Law go? Loto pick last year and they like him. Don't think the Nuggets have enough to get Williams unless they wanted to throw in the Bobcats future 1st which I doubt they would do and don't want them to do just for Williams. Its a rough situation right now for the Nuggets. They are not going to be able to get that PG everybody wants. THe Camby for Hinrich idea is a solid one but at the same time Hinrich is making 10+ mil and has around 5 years left on that. Would Hinrich be what this team to take on that type of salery?

AI comes off after this season, who knows what will happen there and the Nuggets are just going to have to figure it out without that big move, unless someone take K-Mart or Nene which no one will. Not like Nene can't play just has been bitten by the injury bug and that little thing called cancer. Has the chance for a big year IF the bug stays away from Nene.

Keep our team...just move A.I. to point...he already led the team in assists anyway at SG...might as well make it his main priority...he averaged over 7 assists a game...put him at point and make the move from scoring 25+ points and 7 assists per game to 20-24 points + 8-10 assists....he could EASILY AVERAGE a double double at point.

    PG A.I.
    SG JR
    SF Melo
    PF K-Mart
    C Camby/Nene

we have a good hand...we just ain't playin it right...losing to the western conference champions and having one of the best records in team history isn't a bad way to end the season...I think it's going to be rough but as long as they make SOME SORT of change it will work out...as long as AC isn't running point, we will be good...

Ant1979, I like that backcourt idea of AI and JR. But can you really trust AI at the point. If he can do it, great. In order for it to work he has to get K-mart more involved. K-mart needs great play from the ponit. Nuggets need a young ponit or a passing point.
