* What: Paintings and watercolors by the California- and Colorado-based artist

* Where and when: Sandy Carson Gallery, 760 Santa Fe Drive; through July 12

* The serenity of the square: Sandy Carson this summer has turned over the entire gallery to artist Patsy Krebs, a rare solo in this space.

And after a visit, it's easy to see the rationale: A previous encounter with Krebs' work revealed a selection of her unusual watercolors, rich jewel-toned works that capture ever-so-faintly the concept of a square-within- a-square.

Those engrossing pieces from Krebs' fairly recent "Stepwell" series are part of the picture here, but only part, since the gallery also has included 20 years of paintings in acrylic in what amounts to a mini-survey with big impact.

Krebs's paintings stress the purity of form, the intrigue of geometry and the pursuit of precision, especially works from her "Interlocking" series.

Here simplicity rules, as bars of black, white and other colors meet up as surely as a finely crafted piece of furniture.

The "Quarto" series, in contrast, offers canvases that have been divided into quadrants, while the newest pieces, from the "Ovum" series, are simple presentations of pure color.

It may be hot outside, but inside, with these paintings, the mood is decidedly cool.
