Protect your skin from sunburn and peeling by keeping it hydrated. And don't forget hair treatments that fight frizz.
Love basking in the warmth of the summer sun? We do, too, but we also know those rays, while they feel great, can be harmful to our skin and hair.
We asked Rocky stylist Tobie Orr and makeup pro Sara DeLuca, co-owner of Berenices salon, to share their beauty tips on beating the heat but still looking hot.
Get hydrated
Protect your skin from sunburn and peeling by keeping it hydrated. And don't forget about your hair: Look for treatments that fight frizz.
Hair
* Is your hair color-treated? Use a color-conserve sun protector to maintain your intended shade. One to try: Fekkai Summer Hair Sunshine Shield Spray with UV protection. It can be used on wet or dry hair.
Face
* Masks are great to hydrate, reduce puffiness and give back elasticity to the skin. Most can be used once a week for 30 minutes.
* For all skin types (clear gel on model): Aveda Intensive Hydrating Masque battles the drying effects from the outdoor elements.
* For sunburned skin (green): Aveda Outer Peace Cooling Masque reduces redness from sunburns.
* For dry skin (white): Aveda Tourmaline Charged Radiance Masque is a gentle exfoliating mask made with shiitake mushrooms and corn-derived sugar.
Lips
* Lips can get as dry and sunburned as the rest of your face. Keep them moisturized and reapply often. One to try: Aveda Lip Tint in Cocoa Plum, a moisturizing lip balm with SPF15.
Fresh and easy
Enjoy that fresh, sun-kissed look, but not hours spent sitting in the sun? Natural-looking summer glamour is easy to attain for daytime. A dab of shimmer and some light creams, and you'll be ready for that poolside party or day at the office with a pretty, healthy glow - and no sun damage.
Hair
* Get this look: After washing your hair, work in a quarter-size dollop of Aveda Be Curly (a curl-enhancing cream), twist your hair and clip it on top of your head. For more curl, do two to three twists. Let your hair air dry, then shake it out and add a little Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder (a dry wash that adds volume and takes out oil) to the root. Let it dry for a minute and tousle.
Face
* Faux glow: Tarte Sunburst Beaded Bronzing Lotion gives an all-over sheer bronze glow. Use instead of foundation.
* Shine on: Aveda Inner Light Shimmer Accents in Terrastone (a dark shade) gives an accent to the high points of the face (forehead, tips of your cheekbones, tip of your nose and the tip of your chin). Sweep it across the eyelid as well. Then use Aveda Inner Light in Moonstone (a light shade) under the brow and in the corners of your eyes to create a bright, open eye.
* Get cheeky: Tarte Cheek Stain in Blushing Bride, when placed on the apples of the cheeks and a touch on the lip, gives just a hint of color.
From day to night
No need to spend hours creating your nighttime style. Just refresh your day look for a glamorous evening take.
Hair
* Get this look: Smooth your curly, tousled hair into a loose side ponytail, then twist it into a messy, off-center bun and use bobby pins to keep it in place. A few strands falling out give it an easy, I-didn't-really-have-to-try appeal.
Face
* On the eyes: Use Aveda Eye Definer in Cocoa inside the lash line and blend it across the lash line with your finger. Then line all the way around the eye with Laura Mercier eye shadow in Peach Luster, using a smudge brush to create a soft, smoky eye.
* Touch up: Keep your cheeks pink by adding a little more of the Tarte cheek stain. Then, to pump up the look for night, add Aveda Lip Glaze in Bronze Blaze on top of the Tarte stain for extra shine.
