Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, arrives at Colorado Springs Airport in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Wednesday, July 2, 2008.
COLORADO SPRINGS Barack Obama laid out an ambitious call to service this morning, saying as president he would ask middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year and college students to perform 100 hours of service a year.
"This means by the time you graduate from college, you'll have done 17 weeks of service," Obama said. "That's two hours a week. That's not a lot."
Obama came to Colorado Springs and spoke to about 400 people in a gym at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. After the speech, he was headed to the Air Force Academy and NORAD. He was going to hold a fundraiser at the Broadmoor Hotel later in the evening at $1,000 per person.
The speech — about 30 minutes long — didn't feature much in the way of attacks against his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain and it offered a few glancing blows at President Bush.
With a giant American flag as a backdrop, he painted a picture of a nation less secure in the world and diminished in the eyes of other countries. He blamed Bush for the loss in stature.
"Instead of a call to service, we were asked to go shopping. Instead of a call for shared sacrifice, we gave tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans in a time of war for the first time in our history," he said. "Instead of leadership that called us to come together, we got patriotism defined as the property of one party and used as a political wedge to take us into a war that should never have been authorized and never been waged."
The crowd erupted into applause.
The appearance in El Paso County was somewhat surprising given its conservative base, though campaign officials said he wanted to highlight those who have chosen to serve in the military. Colorado Springs is near Fort Carson, which has been a steady pipeline for soldiers headed to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 230 soldiers from Fort Carson have been killed in combat since the start of the Iraq War.
He was introduced by Cori Gadzia, a 24-year-old whose husband — a Fort Carson soldier — is on his second tour in Iraq. Choking up, she praised Obama and said she found "immense comfort" in his candidacy.
But critics blasted Obama's appearance — saying it was a private event not open to the public. Campaign officials acknowledged it was an invitation-only affair for those in either military service, public service or campaign volunteers.
Before the event began, Colorado Republican Party Chair Dick Wadhams and State Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, ripped Obama — using comments made by retired Gen. Wesley Clark on the Illinois senator's behalf that questioned McCain's qualifications for president based solely on his military credentials.
"Senator Obama has talked many times about having new politics about issues, not attacks," Gardner said. "But he stands back while his surrogates attack the record of service and heroism of Senator McCain."
Obama's speech didn't reference the Clark comments and the candidate has been distancing himself from them. Obama also didn't address the recent dust-up between himself and Focus on the Family Founder James Dobson, who questioned Obama's interpretation of the Bible.
Instead, Obama offered several specific ideas for his call to service and invoked the names Martin Luther King Jr. and President Kennedy.
He said he would call on Americans to join the military and increase ground forces by 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines. He also sought to expand AmeriCorps from its current 75,000 slots to 250,000. And he called upon Americans to join an Energy Corps to participate in environmental cleanup projects.
"We need your service, right now, at this moment — our moment — in history. I'm not going to tell you what your role should be. That's for you to discover," he said. "But I am going to ask you to play your part. Ask you to stand up. Ask you to put your foot firmly into the current of history. I am asking you to change history's course."
It inspired Nathan Stern.
The 20-year-old said he'd done a few projects in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina but said he now was going to sing up for AmeriCorps.
"He is so incredible and so inspiring," Stern said. "After eight years of Bush and partisanship, he is showing what patriotism is all about."

Obama has shown great disrespect our men and women in uniform by claiming he passed a law on which he did not even cast a vote. Because lying is not a "core Ameican value" Obama should pull the ad and issue an apology to our troops and the American people!

I think it is a great idea to have people volunteer and expand the AmeriCorps program. I did AmeriCorps VISTA right out of college and I learned so much more than my counterparts did in an internship or an entry-level job right out of school. I am by far more successful in my career because of it, not to mention the good I did while I served. I got to start a program from the ground up, work with state, local and federal officials, coordinate meetings, make presentations, write public materials... wow, the list goes on. So, those who say one needs to learn "the value of a dollar" obviously are very short-sighted.
AmeriCorps helps you understand how much the value of a dollar can get you, and how much it can get the most neediest of people, not to mention an understanding that is far beyond the reach of anyone who has never lived in poverty. The experience was invaluable, and it has elevated me far further than I would be should I have chosen to "work" right away. And by work, I mean cruch numbers for a paycheck 3X as much as an AmeriCorps stipend. Now I make 3X as much as those who opted to jump into the "real world". I suggest you parents dont write off volunteering should your kids decide to do that right out of school, or while in school. Not only is it an investment to those who need it when he or she is volunteering, but it is also an investment to his or her future.

and lo and behold this is what i found:
Today, I have signed into law H.R. 4986, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008. The Act authorizes funding for the defense of the United States and its interests abroad, for military construction, and for national security-related energy programs.
Provisions of the Act, including sections 841, 846, 1079, and 1222, purport to impose requirements that could inhibit the President's ability to carry out his constitutional obligations to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, to protect national security, to supervise the executive branch, and to execute his authority as Commander in Chief. The executive branch shall construe such provisions in a manner consistent with the constitutional authority of the President.
National security and interests...same ol' patriotism laws for our security! OH how happy those soldiers must be for more military construction!
And this is why Obama is bad for our country? Well let me give you a lil history bout Obama K this is from his website feel free to go look it up.
In 2003, Barack Obama sponsored and passed legislation that expanded health care coverage to 70,000 kids and 84,000 adults. In the U.S. Senate, Obama cosponsored the Healthy Kids Act of 2007 and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2007 to ensure that more American children have affordable health care coverage.

1. McCain-Feingold Bill (I hate it and it is unconstituional, but it shows McCain can work with the far left (Feingold is about as left as Obama) What has Obama done that is similar?
2. Gang of 14 - Judicial appointments. Once again, McCain works with the left and neither Obama or Hillary were anywhere to be seen.
3. Comprehensive Immigration Reform - I don't agree and it did not pass, BUT AGAIN McCain works with the opposition to achieve concensus. Obama????? Missing In Action Again.

Barack Obama is a leader who will guide our country. Read his words in both his books. I don't remember that quote, but speaking from the context of his work, he meant it in the spirit of Niemoller:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Ashlandbus, its really not worth trying to reason with the animals in this cage. By the way, it might be a good idea to have them ride the ashland bus starting at about Grand to way down where Obama was a community organizer. Maybe they'd think before they made such ignorant comments, that is, if they were ever found again....

Weren't the two Muslim girls part of the "community" as well?
You got one thing right thought. Obama is every bit as slick a politician that ever came out of Chicago politics.

This guy actually has the nerve to suggest that others volunteer for service? Give me a break. While many other young men and women of this country have served and are serving in institutions such as the military, Peace Corps, etc this clown spent his youth, by his own admission, hanging around a college campus drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and occasionally snorting cocaine. This guy is associated with some of the most radical people in the country and is the last person anybody needs to take advice from. "The emperor has no clothes" and he will be exposed fully before November.

I will absolutely defend the oil companies. First of all since when is it wrong to make RECORD profits?? Last time I checked the stock holders and the people as a whole benefit when companies make profits.
Second, their RECORD profits are in absolute numbers. Their profit margin is still 7 or 8 percent, which is not that high compared many other industries.
Third, if it wsn't for the oil companies neither you or I would have a car to drive, the products we use would not be delievered to the shelves, the food we eat would not be plowed from the fields.
So yes, I will defend the oil companies and I want the extreme enviornmentalist to allow more drilling so oil companies can drill even more (lowering our gas price by the way).

You can go on about McCain all you want, but...
I'm still waiting for the defense of Obama's going back on his word about campaign finance guidelines or his removing two Muslim girls from his photo op because they were inconvenient to his "message".
McCain has challenged Obama to 10 neutral townhall meetings before the conventions. Why does Obama run from this?
If he can't stand up to McCain - he sure the hell ain't gonna stand up against anyone else.

yes, cowboy, both candidates are guilty of flip flopping. now get back to trying to come up with some policy stance justification for continuing bush doctrine.
" Why do you call him "McSame?" To be cute? Are you being "ironical?""
i thought we cleared this up months ago. we call him mcsame because his policies are nearly identical to bush's.
"Even if President Bush wished to commit troops to Iran this October, do you really believe that Congress would go along with that?"
dan2, you need to educate yourself on the whitehouse's argument for action without congressional approval. it might surprise you.

wfan, can you tell me why we wouldn't require immediate drilling on already approved and leased land before opening up any more for use?

Yeah Jay, I can tell you why we shouldn't drill first on those other pieces of leased land. Because the oil companies want to drill where they know there is oil. It's as simple as that. Do you really think the oil companies would leave the land alone if they knew there was oil on these leased parcels of land? Regarding your characterization of John McCain as McSame, I'll take the chance that he won't be the same as Bush rather than vote for Oblabba with his disatrous policies and his severe lack of experience at anything important other than hanging around with radicals and racists. I also don't want to be taxed to death so that health insurance can be provided to millions of illegal aliens and I sure don't want Obama (an even bigger clown than Jimmy Carter) to be placed in charge of the nation's military and neither does the vast majority of the military. I also don't want this left wing radical appointing justices to the Supreme Court. Oblabba may be change but I don't see anything positive about the change he would bring other than he's not Bush.

actually this is a myth as well. the recent senate report on the matter confirms that there are enough resources under the lands already approved to increase our domestic oil production by up to 50% and our natural gas production up 75%
again...why wouldn't we support that kind of near immediate production increase before allowing the leasing of lands that are environmentally controversial? what's the hold up? what are we waiting on? how high does gas need to go before we stop this long standing practice of allowing oil companies to stockpile leases?
" I'll take the chance that he won't be the same as Bush"
you're certainly more than welcome to do so, but the data is against you.
"Oblabba with his disatrous policies"
which of his policy stances do you find "disastrous"
"I also don't want to be taxed to death "
well then you shouldn't have voted for republicans over the last 25 years...

there we go...we finally get to the heart of the matter. you'll happily vote for a failure as long as they dangle that sc carrot in front of your face.
" Oblabba may be change but I don't see anything positive about the change he would bring other than he's not Bush."
well then by all means, tell us which bush accomplishments warrant a vote to continue his policies under mccain.
