Housing Works for Colorado, a citizen group that was working to create a housing investment fund for the state, said Wednesday that it is suspending its petition drive and withdrawing a proposed state constitutional amendment to create the fund for "affordable" housing.

"We have reached the conclusion that the days are too few and our resources too limited to overcome the short time frame for delivering over 76,000 valid signatures by the Aug. 4 deadline," said Britta Fisher, chairwoman of the Colorado Housing Investment Fund Coalition.

Advocates will meet to regroup and set a new direction for the coalition of organizations that had been supporting the ballot initiative.

Initiative 103 would have created a real estate transfer tax as a funding source to create and preserve affordable housing.
