Denver Clerk Stephanie O'Malley has been appointed to the new state Election Reform Commission that will study voting systems this fall and recommend changes to the state legislature.

O'Malley is the third person named to what is expected to be an 11-member panel. The other two also are clerks. Scott Doyle of Larimer County and Patti Nickell of Bent County were appointed last week by outgoing House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver. Senate President Peter Groff, D-Denver, appointed O'Malley.

The reform commission was created by a new state law, passed in the spring, sponsored by outgoing Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver. The panel is charged with studying more than a dozen issues relating to elections, including the reliability of electronic voting equipment. The group has no statutory power and must make recommendations to the state legislature by March 2009.

The other eight volunteer members, including the chair, must be named by Aug. 15 by lawmakers, the secretary of state's office and the governor.
