Was it appropriate to sing the Black National Anthem at the State of the City address in Denver?

Jazz singer Rene Marie was invited to sing the National Anthem at Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address today. Instead, Marie sang what is known as the Black National Anthem, sparking outrage among some of the estimated 700 people who attended the ceremony.

Denver's City Council president is getting hammered with hate-filled messages in response to Tuesday's surprise performance of the "Black National Anthem" by a jazz singer during a city event.

Chanteuse René Marie had been invited by Mayor John Hickenlooper's office to sing the national anthem during his annual State of the City address.

Council President Michael Hancock, the master of ceremonies, introduced Marie, who sang what is known as the "Black National Anthem" instead.

Her performance evoked angry reactions among some of the estimated 700 people at the event.

"There is no substitute for the national anthem. Period," Councilman Charlie Brown said.

"This is the State of the City address. It's not an NAACP convention," he said, referring to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Hickenlooper and his staff said they expected Marie to sing the "The Star-Spangled Banner" and that they were surprised when she sang something different.

In a statement late Tuesday, Hickenlooper said: "I'm disappointed that this matter has been a distraction from the great work and significant accomplishments of our city employees over the past year and the many important initiatives on tap for the coming year."

Hickenlooper said in an interview that he spoke to Marie after the ceremony and that she apologized profusely.

The mayor also said that Marie told him she meant no disrespect.

"She blended the two songs together," Hickenlooper said. "She was trying to make an artistic expression of her love for the country. She did not intend to make a political statement or anything."

Marie sang the first verse of James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," also known as the "Black National Anthem," but adapted those lyrics to the tune of the "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Marie said she had no regrets. She deliberately didn't tell anybody about her song choice "because I don't think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically," she said.

"I would not change a thing," Marie said.

"You have to risk things. You have to. Otherwise, you might of well live your life by a script."

Hancock said he had no idea that Marie was going to sing anything but the national anthem.

"I just read off the script, which was to introduce her to do the national anthem, so I expected the national anthem," he said.

Hancock, who met Marie for the first time Tuesday, said Marie should have cleared her song choice with the mayor and his administration.

It was "inappropriate" that she didn't, he said.

"She certainly should have given the mayor and the administration the opportunity to decide if they wanted her to sing the song that she sang," he said.

Hancock said he's been getting hate-filled e-mails over the song.

"I'm getting — as if I made the decision to do this — I'm receiving a lot of hate mail," he said. "I've received quite a few e-mails that are quite nasty."

LIFT EV'RY VOICE AND SING

also known as "The Black National Anthem"

by James Weldon Johnson

Lift ev'ry voice and sing,

Till earth and heaven ring.

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise,

High as the list'ning skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

I'm not trying to smear her, but explain to me what the hell that was about?
The response of some here are a typical example of the stinking attitude toward this country even by many of it's own people, they think angry dissent is patriotic, if you ask me they hate both the country and anyone who isn't "democratically liberal" enough to let it all hang out in disrespect. Jose Feliciano "dared" to scat at the end of his singing of the anthem at the 1968 Major League All-Star Game in Detroit that was televised nationally by NBC, a year later Jimi Hendrix gave us a rock version at Woodstock.

I found it more disrespectful that the councilman who introduced Ms. Marie stumbled and didn't say her name correctly.

(It would be an entirely different situation if her choice was pre-approved - which this article clearly states was not the case.)

Meanwhile - for those of you who are so irate that a black would dare pull a stunt like this, one must guess that you will be attending the "Stars and Bars Boat Parade" on Lake Dillon on the Fourth. Or will you protest that chosen title (considering that the Stars and Bars was used as the official flag of the Confederacy from March 1861 to May of 1863) - or is it acceptable when a bunch of whites pull a stunt like that?

Once again we can all see what "patriotism" means to the left. Hate and attack America and those that stand up for her. So go ahead call me a "flag waiver, apple pie loving, red necked, racist, bigot, ect." I know where my loyalties are, and am proud of my country, it's flag, and what it stands for! Folks, there is a white national anthem. It's called "The Star Spangled Banner". Written by a white man, set to a white drinking tune, about a battle fought between white people. It was not adopted as the national anthem of the USA until 1931, over 100 years after it was written and 31 years after "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was written in 1900. Before 1931, "The Star Spangled Banner" was one of several patriotic songs used at important events. For many years, "Hail, Columbia!" was the first choice. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is a song written by blacks that they preferred to use at the time, as it spoke more directly to their experience coming out of slavery.

I would say doing a surprise substitution of the lyrics was not a good idea on the singer's part. But it's not a racist song. I'm white and I've sung it during MLK and similar events (even before I knew it was the "black national anthem").

I'm personally stunned by the level of hate, racism, and ignorance show by some of the people here. Most of you have confused patriotism with nationalism, and are obviously convinced that criticism is unpatriotic- what you are all espousing is not democracy, not even republicanism, but a blunted form of fascism, where only ideas that are positive to the current administration or ruling party is acceptable.
Firstly, your fallacious comments regarding Ms. Marie's song and it's assumed effect on the DNC are beyond uninformed- will this affect Sen. Obama because he's black and she sung the "black national anthem"? Probably not- she never said anything about politics and I assume neither did this in support of or in collusion with Obama or the Democratic party... Asserting that it will somehow have an effect clearly illustrates a racial intent- She's black, and so is Obama! Bam- Limbaugh Logic. It's not true- does McCain lose votes every time someone with an Irish surname does something unpopular? No. Does one woman not singing the song she was supposed to bode ill for the security of the DNC? Not likely... 50,000 protesters is not anything at all like one jazz singer invited to sing at city hall. (And the fact that no one interrupted is a good indication that all those assembled were at least polite.)
Secondly, have you ever thought that people like you are the reason the Republican party and conservatism in general is so unpopular these days? Blind, unwavering support for a corrupt administration, thinking you're patriots by waving your flags and signing off on oppression, posting vaguely racist comments on the RMN board... It may surprise some of you, but Black people, Hispanic people, non-Christians,and even women can vote nowadays! And not all of them are liberal socially or fiscally- but when the face of the Republicans and conservatism on the ground is a bunch of blind nationalists, overcome by the perfume of their patriotism and love of "America, our way or no way"- it turns more people away than attracts them. Why would I want to continue to vote for a party that has trampled our constitution, threatens our rights, advocates a single religion, and spends money like it's going out of style... I'd rather have Eugene Debs in office right now than turn the country over to people like yourselves. What Republican businessman would want to associate with a bunch of people who speak with forked tongues about any of their customer base? What socially conservative black man would want to even be remotely associated with "patriots" like you?
Should she have sung the national anthem? Maybe. Does it offend me that she didn't? Not at all- an essential part of democracy is the voice of the people: I don't always agree with what everyone says, but that's what made this country great- not just some words set to a British drinking song.

The worse things get maybe people will get back to what really matters. If singing the national anthem was such a magical, powerful thing that this event has made it out to be this country would be in much better shape financially, healthier, smarter, and with less people desperate to lash out at anyone who isn't just like them. It is a song that has been chopped up by many, and people in attendance at the events usually don't know the proper behavior to be observed during its playing/singing. Much like the idiots that improperly display the flag.
Events like this just allow more racists and bigots to feel justified in outing themselves to the world. Which is ultimately a good thing since you should know who is really worth listening to in the first place. Back to work........please join me slackers

Why has this become a race issue? It was a song - the wrong song but a song. Black Americans homeland is America - America was built on the backs of blacks. Why is it wrong to have a song that respresents' American freedom. Why was Obama even brought up in this discussion? I am black and like the National Anthem and the Black National Anthem. Both songs speak to our great country.

Seems like Denver is not as progressive as we thought. Do the right thing, focus on important issues.

If you are not racist quit writing hurtful things.

Thank you so much for reminding me of Miss Houston's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. YES! The lady sang it perfectly. I still remember her performance.

It appears that this little act, with the above article, has certainly polarized the blogging community!!!

In past times this would have been viewed as traitorous. I respect her opinion, as I do most people, but she crossed the proverbial line. If she were in the nation called the Black United States the anthem would have been appropriate, but I've never heard of that place.

This just shows everyone what kind of person she really is. I will make sure that any company that employs her I will never spend a penny at. Sorry Shadow Theater Company you have lost a customer if she is in the show.

I see a lot of people here asking why race is being brought up in these posts. In my opinion, Ms. Marie brought race into this issue by singing a song knows as the "Black" National Anthem, instead of singing what she hired to sing.

I've read the words to the Black National Anthem, and I think it is a beautiful song. It's still not America's National Anthem.

People should consider themselves Americans FIRST and Black/White/Hispanic SECOND.

This was an act of gross disrespect to our country and to our men and women in arms, regardless of color.

This harmed the cause of racial harmony just as much as the Hispanic protestors who waved the Mexican flag and shouted about "reconquesta"!

Shame on her and shame on Hick for not stopping it as it happened.

Frankly, as a black social conservative I am appalled. Every black person knows that song is strictly reserved for black occasions where it can get the reverence it deserves and is not for the entertainment of others. Half of you didnt even know there was a black national anthem and now look. Next thing you know everyone will be singing it and it will go the way of jazz and the blues. But don't yew all worry your pretty lil heads. A copy of "What Every Colored Person Should Know"
