Picks and pans
Pan: Honestly, this one takes the (Valentine's Day) cake: The Ex 5-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with Unique Holder, $69.95, in a new color (in case you are sick of the color you gave your sweetie last year). It's a knife block shaped like a guy, with the knives stuck through him in every direction - like a voodoo doll - from Amazon.com/home.
Pick: You could give your Valentine some sissy chocolates, or you could test his or her mettle with these bars from Cowgirl Chocolates: Spicy Dark Chocolate Huckleberry, Spicy Lime Tequila, Spicy Orange Espresso (all with a dash of cayenne pepper), and Mild Milk Chocolate Sarsaparilla, Lavender and Mint. Oh, and there's also Mild Milk and Mild Dark Chocolate, $2.50 per bar, cowgirlchocolates.com or 1-888-882-4098.
Super Bowl stars
The real action at the Super Bowl? The Taste of the NFL, an officially sanctioned party at which players are paired with chefs from their home playing fields. This year, Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson of Boulder's Frasca will team with former Broncos defender Karl Mecklenburg at the gala, held in Phoenix on Saturday. It raises money for hunger-related charities, including Food Bank of the Rockies. If you want in on the action without boarding a plane to Arizona, you can buy the 2008 Taste of the NFL Restaurant Guide, with recipes from the chefs, at tasteofthenfl.com.
Keep on flippin'
Tuesday is National Pancake Day, coinciding with the traditional feast day before the start of Lent. Pancakes were traditionally an easy way to use up rich ingredients before the start of this season of fasting. In honor of Pancake Day, BedandBreakfast.com sponsored a Pancakes With Personality contest. The winner: Joanne Nichols of the Arbor Inn B&B in Rye, N.H., for her Lemon Buttermilk Ricotta Cheese. A step back in time
The latest incarnation of Baur's restaurant, once legendary in Denver, is having its grand opening tonight. The name's the same, but this Baur's dishes up contemporary cuisine among memorabilia from the old restaurant. The lavish cocktail reception, 5:30 to 8 p.m., will include "appearances" by historic personalities Robert W. Speer (Denver Auditor Dennis Gallagher), Mattie Silks (Charla Stilling), Emily Griffith (Debra Faulkner) and Otto P. Baur (Tom Noel). Baur's is at 1512 Curtis St. (most recently Victory American Grill). Cost is $50 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation. More info: DPLFriends.org/events or 720-865-2051.
