GOT YOUR GOAT

You've probably heard the phrase, "Someone's got your goat." But did you ever wonder where the saying came from? In anticipation of today's 9 a.m. junior market goat show, we explore:

According to a number of Web sites, legend has it horses of a high-strung nature were often calmed when goats were corralled with them, especially before a race. The story goes, rivals and crooks would steal the goat and then bet against the horse in hopes it would run a poor race.

Meanwhile, an old English belief has the goat being penned up with cows, another calming effect that would have the cows producing more milk. If someone snatched the goat, it was believed the cow would be less productive.

GOT YOUR DOG?

From platforms to tunnels to hurdles and teeter-totters, Wednesday's dog agility games offered a variety of obstacle courses for the pooches to traverse.

But if you missed the show, here are some games to try at home. While these games, suggested by dogpatch.org, don't mirror those of the stock show, they'll likely put a wag on your pup's tail.

* Bobbing for bones: Float five small milk bones in a bucket of water. Count how many bones your dog can catch (and eat) in 30 seconds.

* Test your dog's focus: Litter a path with rawhide chews, squeaky toys, balls and dog food. Call your dog. See if Fido can maneuver his way through the course without diversion.

* Speedy retrieval: Set up a basket of balls. Encourage your dog to bring back as many as possible in a minute.

Still want to see the stock show's agility games? There's another show set for Jan. 25.

THE PONY EXPRESS?

The Denver Post Office is staffing a temporary post office station at the stock show from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Jan. 12-27. Station location: the Hall of Education, on the first floor of the complex, booth No. 18.
