Xcel Energy announced Friday it is seeking bids for 25 megawatts of solar-power generation as part of its compliance with the Colorado Renewable Energy Standard.
Approved by lawmakers last year, the standard requires large utilities to obtain 20 percent of their electricity from renewable resources such as solar or wind by 2020, implying Xcel would need to have 100 megawatts of solar energy in its system by then.
Xcel requested proposals Friday and said location of the proposed project, which could include one or more solar plants, would be determined by the bids. The project is expected to come online between 2009 and 2012.
