During the New Year's "Heat Is On" campaign this year, 452 people in Colorado were arrested for drunk driving.

The campaign ran from 6 p.m. Dec. 28, 2007, and ended at 3 a.m. Wednesday. One person died in an alcohol-related crash during that time.

A similar campaign in 2006-2007 resulted in 449 DUI arrests but no fatalities.

Most of the DUI arrests this year were made by the Colorado State Patrol, which had 117, followed by Denver, with 73. Colorado Springs police had 56, and Fort Collins and Greeley police nabbed 13 each.

Lakewood police accounted for 12 DUI arrests, followed by Longmont and Summit County, each tallying 11 arrests. Pueblo police caught 10.

The next Heat Is On campaign is slated to take place over St. Patrick's Day weekend, March 14-18.

I suggest that if you drink and drive that you purchase a personal breathalyzer. People have no idea what a legal BAC is. For less than $100, you can find out when you are over the limit.

A relative of mine recently was arrested, charged and convicted for a DUI.

So far, he estmates the total cost including legal, fines, towing, court, insurance etc. at approximately $10,000. He also enjoys all the winter fun of taking public transportation everywhere in the snow & cold, and hasn't been able to drive for 9 months. Community service (picking up trash ... shoveling snow in public) is also lots of fun and a real self-image booster.

Now he has a breathalyzer / starter (for which he pays installation and monthy charges) installed on his car for a minimum of 12 months.

And he is lucky. Lucky that while he was driving around stone drunk (0.18) he did not kill or maim innocent people.

Folks, it ain't worth it. Just don't do it.
If I am going to drink, I stay home. If I'm going out, I hire a cab, a limo, or get someone sober to drive me and pick me up. It's as simple as that.

You can call it "MADD fascism" or say things have gone too far, but how would you feel if on your way home after "a few social drinks" with friends / coworkers you accidently killed someone's little kid, even if you officially were not at fault?
(See the film "THE CROSSING GUARD" directed by Sean Penn starring Jack Nicholson)

Or if a chronic DUI dirtbag slammed head-on into a car carrying your family?

If we have to error, better we error on the side of caution. Anyone who drinks and drives these days is just plain reckless and stupid.

Oh now come on Tillie! What offended you about my original post, my reference to the drunk driving patron saint of the liberals or my comment about lawyers?

Could it have been that I referred the law enforcement officers as "Cops"? I have had over a dozen law enforcement officers as friends and NONE of them considered "Cop" as derogatory.

I have a right to be totally offended by drunk drivers and the lawyers that try to get them off. I had an aunt murdered by the liberal's patron saint wanna-be.

A drunk driver. This refers to The Blob, Ted Kennedy, being the patron saint for the liberals. Hence, a drunk driver wants-to-be another Kennedy. I'm being incredibly sarcastic with this comment. I realize that not all liberals worship The Blob.

In the nuked positing I had also referred to lawyers that get off Kennedy wanna-bes as members of "the worlds oldest profession."

As an aside, I like your screen name. I use to be a Navy parachute rigger and still have my FAA Senior Rigger ticket.
