Three eighth graders, two girls and a boy, from a Lakewood middle school have been charged in Jefferson County court with possession of the drug Dilaudid.
They were found in possession of the drug at school in early February.
A teacher at Carmody Middle School became suspicious when she observed a girl hand something off to a boy in the hallway. The teacher reported what she had observed to the assistant principal who called them into his office. School officials then called Lakewood police, officials said.
Police determined that a third child likely brought the narcotic painkiller from home to the school and gave it to her friends.
"We strongly advise parents take the necessary steps to keep narcotics away from their children," said Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey.
The three eighth-graders have been charged with possession of a controlled substance, one gram or less.
