The Broncos locked up defensive end John Engelberger to a new two-year deal just before the opening of the free-agent signing period Thursday night, his agent said.

The move should be the first in a series of tweaks made to the Broncos' inexperienced front four over the coming weeks.

But one name that can be removed from the target list is Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.

The Broncos were linked to the talented but enigmatic two- time Pro Bowl selection nearly from the time Rogers was put on the trade market, but the team no longer is in the picture.

There are several other defensive tackles on the market the Broncos still could pursue, though Green Bay Packers franchise-designee Corey Williams appears headed to the Cleveland Browns in a trade, according to a story in today's Washington Post.

Carolina's Kris Jenkins also is available, but the Broncos showed a strong aversion to him last offseason when he was on the trading block.

Jacksonville's Marcus Stroud and the New York Jets' De- wayne Robertson are other players reportedly being shopped.

No longer on the market is Engelberger.

His representative, Bob Lattinville, said his client professed a strong desire to remain in Denver since he hit playing-time thresholds in his deal that voided his 2008 contract and put the player on the cusp of free agency.

The sides talked in Indianapolis on Saturday and had appeared to table talks for the time being.

But the conversations quickly were rekindled Thursday and a contract was hammered out.

Engelberger started 15 games at left end for the Broncos last season and had at least a share of the tackle lead among defensive linemen in seven games.

Engelberger's signing leaves kicker Jason Elam as the team's highest profile in-house free agent set to hit the open market late Thursday night.

Elam said in an e-mail there's "nothing new on the Broncos front." Elam is leaving this weekend for a trip to Israel with some current and former teammates.

Others taking that same free-agent route are fullback Cecil Sapp, defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, safety Nick Ferguson and tight end Nate Jackson.

The Broncos gave center/ guard Chris Meyers the low tender offer of $927,000 as a restricted free agent, meaning if another team signs him, the Broncos will receive a sixth-round pick as compensation.

Also, the agent for Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth, Brian Mackler, said Thursday he has been informed by the Broncos an Internet report indicating a trade might be imminent strictly is rumor.

TITANS TENDER SCAIFE: The Tennessee Titans gave Denver native Bo Scaife a $1.47 million restricted free-agent tender offer, meaning the team gets a second-round pick as compensation if the tight end is signed elsewhere and it chooses not to match.

Wow, the Broncos signed a productive player for a change. Shanahan must be on vacation.
