CU chancellor says Asian 'hate' column 'damaging'
College dean to meet with Web site's editors; Peterson issues apology

The student editors of a University of Colorado newspaper were wrong to publish an opinion column written earlier this week that said all Asians hate white people and should be captured and "hog-tied," CU officials said Wednesday.
The column, "If it's war the Asians want ... It's war they'll get," by student editor Max Karson, appeared Monday on the Campus Press Web site. It infuriated some students andpast members of the Campus Press staff, who said the piece was inflammatory and in poor taste.
In his commentary, Karson called for all Asians to be rounded up for a "reformation" that involves forcing them to drink, dance and eat bad sushi.
"They hate us all," Karson wrote. "And I say it's time we started hating them back."
Karson has declined to speak publicly about the column, but editors earlier this week defended his freedom of speech in online postings, saying racial tension is a "very real phenomenon."
On Wednesday, the editors issued an apology to anyone who was offended, after CU Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson released his own written apology to the Asian and Asian-American communities at CU and abroad for what he called a "poor attempt at social satire laden with offensive references, stereotypes and hateful language."
"It was not properly labeled as either satire or commentary, and readers were left with the impression that the author spoke for the collective staff and leadership of the Campus Press, and perhaps even the University of Colorado," Peterson wrote. "He spoke for none of the aforementioned, and while his column is unquestionably protected under the First Amendment, the sentiments he has expressed are wounding and damaging to a community we hold dear."
Peterson wrote that he's asked the dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to review the matter and "consider what steps are appropriate to account for what was published."
Paul Voakes, dean of the journalism school, said the column was inappropriate to publish.
"In my humble opinion, the student editors on this Asian piece got it wrong," Voakes said.
Voakes said he plans to meet today with Karson, Campus Press editor-in-chief Cassie Hewlings and faculty advisor Amy Herdy to discuss the situation, although he said none of the Campus Press staff is facing disciplinary action.
"The strong reaction to these opinion pieces, I think, is going to be a real wake-up call to the students and editing staff," Voakes said. "I just want to make sure that we can go forward learning some things from this experience."
Voakes said the job of a newspaper editor, even one that's part of a university class, is to recognize the line between freedom of speech -- "including freedom of despicable speech" -- and publishing material "whose text and tone is so gratuitously offensive that its intention or original point is missed by the readers."
"It takes a pretty sophisticated editor to know where that line should be," Voakes said. "I think we need to have a chat about that."
The editors of the student publication wrote Wednesday that Karson's piece "has clearly upset a large segment of our readership, and for that, we owe it to those who were offended by the article to maintain the highest level of journalistic integrity and sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt by this article."
They wrote that Karson's piece was satirical and was meant as a commentary on racism at CU as part of the Campus Press' opinion section. It was "not presented as fact or incitement, and not published to intentionally incite controversy," they wrote.
CAMPUS PRESS EDITORS' STATEMENT ON MAX KARSON'S OPINION PIECE
Max Karson's Monday opinion, "If it's war the Asians want," has clearly upset a large segment of our readership, and for that, we owe it to those who were offended by the article to maintain the highest level of journalistic integrity and sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt by this article.
Karson's opinion is satire and is a commentary on racism at CU published in our opinion section, not presented as fact or incitement, and not published to intentionally incite controversy. We apologize for any ambiguity of the satire that may have been misconstrued.
The Campus Press, as the only true vehicle for student voice to the CU community, offers a unique chance for aspiring journalists to learn this craft, and we are exploring a new and continuously evolving medium on a springboard to the professional world.
Like all aspiring journalists, we will learn from this experience and better our publication. The Campus Press has always been, and will continue to be, a source for credible university news and a voice for this student body.

STATEMENT FROM CU CHANCELLOR BUD PETERSON
On behalf of the University of Colorado at Boulder, I want to apologize to the members of Colorado's Asian and Asian-American communities for a satirical column written by a student columnist at the CU Campus Press -- the Web-based student news outlet managed by the University of Colorado School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The column was a poor attempt at social satire laden with offensive references, stereotypes and hateful language.
It was not properly labeled as either satire or commentary, and readers were left with the impression that the author spoke for the collective staff and leadership of the Campus Press, and perhaps even the University of Colorado.
He spoke for none of the aforementioned, and while his column is unquestionably protected under the First Amendment, the sentiments he has expressed are wounding and damaging to a community we hold dear and come at a time when we are trying to celebrate diversity at CU-Boulder with our annual Diversity Summit.
I want to personally apologize to the individuals who may have been wounded or offended by the column and the perspectives that it purports to represent.
I have asked the dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to review this matter, to meet with the management of the Campus Press and to consider what steps are appropriate to account for what was published.
In the meantime, I invite the commentary of all communities to the Campus Press Web site at www.thecampuspress.com. While that discussion takes place, let me reiterate the support of the CU-Boulder campus, our collective campus community, and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, for our Asian and Asian-American students, and for all students of color from all walks of life.
Let me also reaffirm my commitment to building a campus that embraces diversity in all its forms, and that also promotes free speech, open debate and discussion of issues and ideas, and that will not trade one to achieve the other.

Once again free speech only applies to left-wing people who attack others. If anyone says or writes something that is percieved as racism in a newpaper ,it's hate speech and unacceptable. If however a campus newspaper says stuff like *uck Bush in big bold headlines, that's ok?
I think we need a clarification on the rules of free speech and who it applies to and who it doesn't.I thought it applied to everyone.I guess the rules are changing.
Was the satire or whatever you want to label it free speech?Yes. Was it responsible free speach? No.
However once again our colleges and universities are being exposed for what they are.Colorado seems to have plenty of instances where they have exposed the liberal left bias they teach adults that are going to be working members of our society.CU and CSU are showing Americans just what thousands of dollars can buy you in college.Nothing.Save your money and let your kids read thedailykos everyday.

Many people never grow enough to learn that there is a fine line between "freedom of speech" and being offensive, which is an ineffective way of getting your point across.
One of the most difficult lessons to learn as you mature from being a child to an adult is that Perception is 99% of reality. You can express something one way, but if it's perceived an entirely different way, then your original intention doesn't matter.
Of course... so far none of these above comments reflect that you all actually read the article, but that doesn't surprise me much.

You might notice that the writer of the offensive article intended for the article to be satirical.
Satire, so you know, is by definition, "a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule."
To put this in terms you might understand is to say that the original writer was trying to poke ridicule at racism. Obviously, he didn't do such a great job because what his presumed intention was and how it was perceived were different by a long shot.
As long as you continue to focus on the disparity between races, you will continue to get a disparity between races. You're just feeding the frenzy.

I like the way they so proudly call themselves African Americans, yet I don't think she took advantage of the African school system.I don't think she and her husband could even survive in Africa.Does she think Africa is her country? Her comments were said and percieved loud and clear. It's okay to take advantage of all that America has to offer, but unless in cater's to a black candidate for President, only then is she proud of her country. She's 45 years old.I think she and her children should go live in Africa and see how proud living in that country would make her.See what education opportunities await her children.see what economic opportunities await her family.
Nothing she says can explain away that one comment she made.Free speech? Absolutely.
Like you said,You can express something one way,but if it's percieved an entirely different way, then your original intention doesn't matter.
