Douglas Bruce today infuriated fellow lawmakers by being the lone legislator who refused to cosponsor a Joint House-Senate resolution honoring Military and Veterans Appreciation Day. Above, he addresses the House last month.

Rep. Douglas Bruce did it again.
The Colorado Springs Republican last month outraged fellow lawmakers by kicking a Rocky Mountain News photographer during the morning prayer on the House floor in his first day as a representative. Colleagues voted to make him the first state lawmaker in history to be censured for dishonoring House decorum and basic decency.
Today he infuriated fellow lawmakers by being the lone legislator who refused to cosponsor a Joint House-Senate resolution honoring Military and Veterans Appreciation Day. He would not say why he did it.
“Today we were honoring people who died for our country, who served our country, and Douglas Bruce is spitting in the eye of every veteran who served our country, and it’s a disgrace,” said Rep. David Balmer, R-Centennial, an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan. “I’m so angry I can’t even talk right now.”
Rep. Rob Witwer, R-Genessee, said he’d never seen a colleague refuse to cosponsor the annual resolution.
“Some of our veterans have sacrificed all for their country,” Witwer said. “The least we can do is say thank you.”
Democrats were also stunned and dismayed.
“I feel like I want to say to him what we used to say in the McCarthy era, ‘Have you no shame?’” said Rep. Alice Borodkin, D-Denver.
“I think he truly believes he’s doing the right thing,” she said. “But I don’t think he realizes he’s out of step with everybody. He’s just different. What can I say?”
House Minority Leader Mike May, R-Parker approached Bruce immediately after he declined to co-sponsor the resolution: “I told him on a day when we honor those who have given such great sacrifice, that he can’t even put forth the effort to push the green button is disgraceful.
“That’s a man with no honor. He has no shame.”
Bruce has refused to speak to the Rocky or The Denver Post since the kicking incident. He refused to answer a reporter's request for comment as he walked off the House floor this morning.
Steve King, R-Grand Junction, co-chair of the committee that recommended censure for Bruce after the kicking incident said: “I for the first time regretted my vote on just censuring him.” He said he won’t be talking to Bruce today. “I don’t want to reinforce his need for attention.”
The rookie lawmaker has often protested other ceremonial resolutions, including an annual one honoring President Ronald Reagan’s birthday, as a waste of lawmaker’s time that could be better spent working on legislation.
Yet Bruce did cosponsor resolutions honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Colorado 4-H Day.
He did it again after the military day honor, asking permission to not vote on a resolution urging universal health care coverage for Colorado Children by 2018. He called it “a waste of time.”
The request was denied by fellow lawmakers on a 55-10 vote.
Bruce then voted no on the kid-coverage resolution, which passed 51-13.
“Are you all happy!” Bruce yelled out to colleagues
Refusing to support the military appreciation resolution is a political risky move for Bruce, who faces a contested re-election in November.
He represents a city that’s the home to Fort Carson, who had several Army members honored at the ceremony, and many current and retired service members.

I call on all Republicans in his district to correct this embarrassment as soon as possible. I admire somebody who stands up for his principles (i.e. resolutions are a waste of time)but this is the wrong resolution to make a stand on. There is nothing wrong with voting for a resolution to honor our vets, no matter what. If you voted for any resolution at all (and he has), then you must only be voting against resolultions that you disagree with. And this is shamefully wrong
Doug Bruce must go ASAP.

All he had to do was push a button? Perhaps he'd like to explain to me why he thinks it is a waste of his time to honor the very people that have made it possible for him to live in a country that has elected officials. I don't really care about the "kicking incident" (two fools acting like fools as I see it) but this is outrageously stupid. Mr. Bruce please come visit me at my home, I'd like to show you how to kick someone for real. Could the people who appointed Rep. Bruce please discuss their thinking in public? I'd like to know. Could the RMN name them publicly (again) and give them the opportunity to respond? I think their friends and neighbors would like to know who they are. I hear that in China when someone screws up bad their neighbors gather outside their house and glare at them for some period of time. Perhaps the people of Colorado Springs would like to adopt this cultural trait. It seems appropriate treatment for the people that appointed Rep. Bruce.

Your ignorance is showing. To be a "vet"/veteran is a matter of having served in some branch of the military. I am a Vietnam-era vet as I served during the Vietnam war but on this side of the Pacific, not in the war zone. There are many thousands of men and women that have served during peace time who carry that very honored distinction of being a veteran of our armed forces.
Obviously, you aren't one of us. In the case of Ricky Lee, he served in Germany during a very hostile period in history. Serving in Germany meant he would be one of the first in action if the Soviets had decided to escalate the tensions.

Bruce is abrasive and opinionated, but he is not a hypocrite. H.R. 1078 has been read twice, and after next reading, will go to Senate for their actions. This bill is to restore almost $3.0 million to Veterans Trust Fund that was hi-jacked in 2002 to balance state budget. Chairman JBC introduced bill to restore the principle amount taken, but Rep. Douglas offered amendment to also restore the $600,000 of interest that should have been earned during 6 year period. I THANK HIM FOR THAT. Many of the same legislators who met with veterans today at Capitol for program in House, voted for the "identity theft" of those funds in 2002, but is it not hypocritical for them? I think so. Quote by Rep. Douglas in paper was that as a past prosecutor, he always believed the criminal should pay restitution in full, PLUS INTEREST and state was not entitled to a free loan. Before piling on, you might give him some slack. Also U.S. House allows vote of Yes, No, or Present. Why do we need more conflict? Have we not had enough this year, with resignation of the Representative of my District?
