UNC lands potential starting QB

This year marks the third recruiting class for University of Northern Colorado coach Scott Downing, but in some respects, it was the first one he truly could sink his teeth into.
Two years ago, Downing hit the recruiting trail on the fly, having just been hired in late December 2005. Last year, Downing was forced to devote much of his recruiting spiel reassuring parents the program was in recovery mode after the many off-field troubles that rocked the program during the 2006 season.
This year, after showing signs of life in the Big Sky Conference at the tail end of the season, Downing signed a class he hopes will continue the Bears' improvement at the Division I-AA level.
With Downing still attempting to find consistency with the spread offense, he signed a potential starter at quarterback in Bryan Waggener, a transfer from the University of Florida. Waggener was a redshirt at Florida last year after transferring from Citrus College in California.
Because Waggener transferred down a division, he will not have to sit out. Waggener will compete with incoming freshman Matthew Baca and senior- to-be Mike Vlahogeorge, who played in six games last season.
