Rep. Morgan Carroll announced this morning that she will run for the state Senate seat that former Rep. Michael Garcia, an Aurora Democrat, had intended to seek.
Garcia resigned his House seat last week after a female lobbyist accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior. He was term-limited in his House District 42 seat and was planning a run for the Senate.
Carroll, a Democrat who represents House District 36, told attendees at a town meeting this morning that she would run for Senate District 29. Carroll was first elected to the House four years ago. Her decision leaves open seats in two House districts in Aurora — hers and Garcia's.
"I hope to continue the progress that I have started in the House and I am committed to bringing the same grassroots, people-powered government over to the Senate," Carroll said.
At the same time, local business owner Su Ryden announced she is running for the seat Carroll is vacating. She has worked in advertising and public relations for 30 years, she said.
