Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said firing Mike Shanahan was the toughest decision he had to make in 25 years of owning the club.

For the first time since Broncos owner Pat Bowlen rang in the new year in 1995, he is searching for a new coach for his football team.
And on Wednesday, he officially offered the job description.
"I want somebody to come in here and win the Super Bowl, that's my No. 1 goal," Bowlen said. "That's what I want to do, it's what I'm here for. Good coaching, good players, good personnel and all the rest of the stuff."
With that, Bowlen will go about the business of what he called a "historic change" in the organization, the business of replacing Mike Shanahan, a two-time Super Bowl winner for the Broncos who also is the franchise's winningest coach.
But while Shanahan had the final say on all football matters, Bowlen on Wednesday also signaled another fundamental change in how the team does its business. The new coach will not have that kind of power.
The new coach will oversee the team's coaching staff, strength and conditioning program and direct the team's on-field strategy and offseason activities. The personnel department, currently directed by Jim Goodman, will oversee the draft and free agency.
And it is Bowlen, with a small circle of advisers that will include Broncos chief operating officer Joe Ellis, at the end of the line.
"I felt Mike was doing both those jobs and doing them well, and I don't anticipate the next coach having both those jobs," Bowlen said. "But, ultimately, it ends up on my desk, I'm here every day, I make the decisions, that's going to continue. . . . I run the show."
Because of that, Bowlen said the Broncos will be focused on finding a new coach because he said his plan is to leave the team's personnel department intact.
Asked about the possibility of hiring a new general manager to oversee personnel, Bowlen said, "I haven't even thought of hiring a general manager. My focus would be a coach."
And already the team appears to be positioning itself toward a run at a coach with a defensive background as well as revamping its defensive philosophy.
After all of Shanahan's assistants met with Bowlen and Ellis on Wednesday, several were told they are free to pursue other jobs, including defensive coordinator Bob Slowik and several of the other defensive assistants.
Of the defensive staff, only line coach Bill Johnson and linebackers coach Jim Ryan, a former Broncos player, attended Bowlen's and Shanahan's news conferences. Almost the entire offensive coaching staff was present.
Shanahan said Bowlen was "going to keep the offensive staff intact, as much as he can. We've got to make some changes, obviously, on the defensive side."
Bowlen initially said none of the assistant coaches would be retained, but he clarified later through a spokesman the assistant coaches who remain when a new coach arrives will be evaluated by the new coach, then decisions will be made.
But Shanahan and quarterback Jay Cutler have lobbied for the team's offensive staff, and Bowlen said Wednesday he plans to keep Cutler informed of the search, calling him "the man around here."
This season, Cutler was selected for his first Pro Bowl after he set single-season franchise records in yards passing (4,526), total offense (4,726 yards), attempts (616) and completions (384) to go with 25 touchdown passes, which tied him for the third-highest single-season total in Broncos history.
The quarterback, who spoke with Bowlen and Shanahan on Wednesday from Nashville, Tenn., where he was attending the Music City Bowl, has made no secret he enjoys working with quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who also called the plays this season.
"Whatever head coach comes in and doesn't see what the offense did in both the running game and the passing game - the youth - would have to be crazy not to try to keep the people that made it happen," Shanahan said.
"That's why when I do leave, I feel excited for Denver," he added. "I'm not trying to put pressure on anybody, but it's what they've done this year. Got to go out and get the defense done the right way."
Bates has three years remaining on his contract after signing a two-year extension.
While Bowlen said he had made no contact with any candidates, it is likely the Broncos initially will lean toward a defensive coach such as Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as they begin their search process.
Schwartz and Bates have known each other for some time, and the two were co-workers when Bates took his first NFL job as a Titans assistant coach.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher repeatedly has said he believes Schwartz is ready to be a head coach.
Several personnel executives in the league said there already was a buzz in the scouting community that the Broncos, because of their firepower on offense, could be the job that finally lures Bob Stoops away from the University of Oklahoma. Bowlen said he would give consideration to a college coach.
Stoops has been linked to several NFL openings in recent years. But he is well-compensated at the collegiate powerhouse, set to earn $6 million this year because of a $3 million bonus for finishing his 10th season in Norman, Okla.
Former Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis, also on Fisher's Titans staff, New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan are other defensive coaches on the league's current A-list.
Also, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, 32, is someone many people in the league consider an up-and-comer if he is surrounded by established coordinators.
"This job . . . this is a very highly thought of job and I expect to get a very good head coach . . . ," Bowlen said. "I want him to be a 10 in every area."
If Bowlen chooses to lean toward offense, former Giants coach Jim Fassel is pursuing openings around the league, having even written a letter to the Oakland Raiders.
Former Broncos assistants Mike Heimerdinger and Gary Kubiak also could fit on the offensive side. Heimerdinger is the Titans' offensive coordinator and Kubiak has two more years remaining on his contract with the Texans.
To secure a head coach who is under contract with another team, such as Kubiak, the Broncos would have to work out a deal with the other team and likely have to surrender compensatory draft picks.
New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been one of the most pursued coordinators in the league in recent seasons. And former Broncos assistant and current Miami Dolphins receivers coach Karl Dorrell has head coaching experience at UCLA.
Because of the Rooney Rule, the Broncos have to interview at least one minority candidate, and the league would prefer more than one be considered. Also, because of the playoffs, there are several timing issues that could impact the speed at which the Broncos can fill the job.
For teams that have a playoff bye this week, the Broncos could interview one of their assistants only until Sunday if they formally have asked for and been granted permission. That could include Schwartz,
Heimerdinger and Spagnuolo.
Then the next window to interview assistants from teams that advance to the Super Bowl comes in the week after the conference championships. Those assistants can be interviewed in their home cities.
All other assistants with teams in wild- card games this weekend can be interviewed once their teams are knocked out of the playoffs or in the week after the conference championship games if the teams keep winning.
Assistants on teams that didn't make the playoffs can be interviewed at any time.
But Bowlen and Shanahan set the table for high expectations with the belief the team's high-powered offense, with players such as Cutler, Brandon Marshall and left tackle Ryan Clady, is set for a quick return to the postseason.
"This is a process that starts (Wednesday) . . . " Bowlen said. "I'm not sure how long it will take or who the candidates are at this time."
"You leave a team that has the utmost character, you feel good about it," Shanahan said. "You look at the offense, at what we did, you feel like you're leaving a team that's got a chance to be a difference-maker. . . . I don't want to put any pressure on the new head coach, but you take a look at the offense, the youth, the talent, defensively we lost a couple of our captains this year, they'll be back, guys that went out, they'll be back, through free agency, the draft, people want to be a Denver Bronco."
The list
Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said he has yet to contact anyone to be his next coach, but a poll of several personnel executives around the league says these names would be on any team's initial list:
* Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz
* Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
* Titans linebackers coach Dave McGinnis
* Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan
* Buccaneers defensive backs coach Raheem Morris
* Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops
* Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger
* Texans coach Gary Kubiak
* Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels
* Dolphins receivers coach Karl Dorrell

Would Kubiak leave Houston already? I'd love to see him back in Denver. Whoever it is, they get to pick at #12 ahead of all the other 8-8 teams. That is very good news. If they draft wisely we'll be right back to contenders next year with a few good FAs too. That draft slot might help us get over the Shanahan hangover.

Denver's new approach needs to include stressing the importance of defense. The Orange Crush was so long ago it seems mythical. But look around the league and see that defense is being played at some locales and very well.
A commitment to using draft picks on defense and being astute about selections is what's needed. For some reason, Mike Shahanan could recognize offensive talent but when it came to defense he was like some novice playing with big money trying to pick stocks accurately.
A nightmare.
Defense has to be a passion for the next leader of men in Denver.

This offense is almost set to run itself. They have a solid line, good WR's and TE's, a solid QB, and they can still run the ball effectively if healthy.
Whoever comes in here needs to have a commitment to Defense. Forget Heimerdinger or any other offensive minded coach. If the Broncos can build a top 10 Defense to compliment the offense, they'll be a top team again.

The idea of Shanahan to Dallas makes me laugh. Not because I don't agree with it, I just think its funny that Shanahan will be replacing Wade Philips...again! He did it in Denver and maybe now in Dallas. Ironic much? And I bet you will see the same results too. With the offense they have there, Shanny will make them unstoppable. I may even root for a Shanny led Cowboy team. God Speed Mr. Shanahan, you made all Bronco fans very proud for a long time and we thank you.

I moved from Denver to Okey City in 04 and believe me Bob Stoops is king down here commanding the sun to shin and the wind to blow. It would be hard, in my opinion, to woo him away from OU. He has put up a championship team something like 4 of the last 5 years. If he could do the same in the pros, then Bowlen would be wise to lure him away, but it would probably take the gold from the capital dome plus a majority interest in the Denver ment. OU has already given him the university plus deeds to most of the oil and natural gas in Oklahoma.

First, Mike Shanahan will not be the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones has always clashed with his high profile coaches.
Second, don't even bring up the thought of Bill Parcells to Denver. Parcells wants to be the only person in the spotlight where ever he is.
Third, stay away from Bob Stoops, forget your OU ties Bowlen, and stay away from Stoops. It's obvious college coaches just can't make the transition to the NFL.
I would find it funny if they hired Marty Schottenheimer, and he ends up winning a Super Bowl with Denver.
Finally, thanks Shanny for the 21 years on the Broncos' sideline, and the two Super Bowls you helped bring Denver. Although it was probably time for a change, you WILL be missed.

As much as I like Bob Stoops, and for what he has done with OU, but I don't believe that this is the team for a college coach to be upgraded into the pros.
The transisition from the college ranks to the NFL rarely works out. It never worked for Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Dennis Erickson, and the list goes on...
Granted Barry Switzer won a SB, but that team was built by Jimmy Johnson.
And it would'nt surprise me to see Shanahan go to Dallas. Jerry Jones and Shanahan have had a great relationship for a long time. Jerry wants to win as bad as Bowlen, and Dallas isn't going to the SB with Wade Phillips at the helm. Dallas will soon have a new stadium, they have a good QB, good running backs, and a few other key players on both sides of the ball.
The only question is, who wins the battle between Pac Man, Tank, & T.O.? Shanahan, or Jerry Jones?

Could Bonehead's "raccoon coat ego" decided that he must win one more super bowl to assure himself as a HOF owner, before he sells the Broncos? Mark13 "must be nice to have an owner who sticks by his guns"
Well mark, Bowlen stuck to his guns for 10 years post Elway, and what has Shanahan done in those 10 years? Here's a recent recap:
Broncos fail to make playoffs, Shanahan gets rid of Griese, brings in Plummer.
Result: Broncos make playoffs, get humiliated by the Colts.
Reaction: Shanahan thinks we need a shutdown corner...we get Champ Bailey
Result: Broncos make playoffs, get humiliated by Colts as Denver fails to generate any pressure on manning and he simply avoids Bailey's side of the field and torches our defense with Clark, Stokely and Wayne.
Reaction: Shanahan decides to draft 3 Cornerbacks and sign a bunch of ex-brown castoffs
Result: Broncos make the playoffs, go 13-3, have a chance to go to the SuperBowl with a win at home, Broncos still get torched and humilated by the Steelers. Plummer blows it, the defense blows it, the D-line still as bad as ever, generates no pressure on Big Ben.
Reaction: Shanahan drafts Cutler, trades Bell and Foster to get Dre Bly (because it is the secondaries fault that the D-line can't pressure the QB, right?) Kubiak goes to the texans.
Result: Plummer, no longer has the guidance of Kubiak and morphs from "No Mistake Jake" back to Jake the Snake. Jake has several bad games, Shanahan benches Plummer, Cutler's in and the Rookie QB unable to be the answer into the playoffs, Broncos miss playoffs. Shanahan fires Coyer, the defenses fault.
Reaction: Shanahan makes a sad attempt to beef up that D-line in the draft. Gets Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder and Marcus Thomas (2 of 3 are pine riders most of the time now). Shanahan hires Jim Bates
Result: Broncos fail to make the playoffs again, the Defense is worse than it was with Coyer. The Defense looks lost and confused for most of the season.
Reaction: Shanahan fires Sundquist as GM, asks Bates to take a reduced role, Bates leaves. Shanahan becomes GM, hires Slowik as D-coordinator.
Result: Broncos miss playoffs 3 years in a row, Offense is good at times, but rarely good enough to offset how bad the defense is. The Defense is again, one of the worst in the NFL, Denver drops 3 straight games to fall from first place to out of the playoffs and is humiliated again by the Chargers in their last game.
Mark13, if you're an owner and you see this team, year after year after year generate only 1 playoff win and 4 humiliating playoff losses in 10 years, don't you think it is time to turn the page?
Year after year, Shanahan has made scapegoats of everyone from the D-coordinators to the Secondary and Special Teams to the GM. He's out of scapegoats now. Bowlen gave him the chance to run it all and they only got worse in the areas that they needed to improve.

And then I would'nt be surprised if Cowher comes into the picture. The thing about Cowher, he would bring a lot of 'energy' to the team, and to the city! The offense is already in place, and Cowher is a defensive minded coach, and a players coach with a no non-sense approach. And plus he did a good job with hand picking Mike Tomlin to coach the Steelers apon his exit.

I'll wager the opportunity for Coach Cowher coming to Denver would light a fire in his solar plexus. We were one team that consistently upset his apple cart. Yeah some of those moves worked, most didn't, but most importantly we are at the verge of being a very solid solid team. This is probably the most important off season in many many years. We can all see the possibilty of this offense, and with some defensive help we would be back knocking at the superbowls door. Here is one fact some may not know....IN the year of super bowl 33, Denver was 27th against the pass. The Defense wasn't great, we just had a few playmakers and were the epitomy of "bend dontbreak" I think we a taking a step back by firing shanahan. This is bad timing, and an emotional reaction to a tough loss in a tough season. We traded a simple head ache for migrane. Jersey, guess what? Spagnuolo is going to interview with Bowlen. Already came up on another article. Sorry, bro. But it may just happen.
Although homeradam could have worded it better, I feel the "Rooney rule" is wrong. Hire by who you think will get the job done. Nobody should be forced to interview a "minority' because it's "politically correct". If a man of other then 'white race" is brought in because he is qualified, cool. But to bring a man in who is not qualified, merely because he is considered a "minority", is wrong. Besides, what they are considering a "minority", are generally making more money then the average, middle class American. Interview by qualifications. Hire by qualifications. Not by the color of your skin.
Davismg, I don't agree. College coaches struggle too much going from college to pro. Spagnuolo is up for grabs. They are also going to interview Stoops from OK (which I also feel is a bad move). I want a season defensive coach from the NFL. What we get, of course, is not my call. I'm just along for the ride.

give charger fan a break, this year's record was above average for them. Ours wasn't, but we'll right the ship. Party on chargers, as your little dingy sinks.

Don't mind the Charger fan, they have a lot of pent up frustration after decades of mediocrity. As soon as the current group of players leaves town and the team hits the skids again, the San Diego "faithfull" will go back to a half empty stadium filled with the opposing team's fans.

A real quarterback...? chargertom, are you referring to the used car salesman that lives in Great Falls, MT? Ryan Leaf? The Tijuana Chargers have nothing going for them. Oh wait, you have a stadium that should be condemned, you fired Schottenheimer, and after the Hochuli call, Charger fans were sending the guy threatening e-mails. Real LOSERS!
Just remember, the Colorado River flows into SoCal. So keep on yappin', and we'll keep on flushin'!

RockyMts69, ha, ha, too funny. I liked it. Trolls like Chargertom who's had his account suspended 3 times on the Denver Post, tells me all I need to know of his character. He has none. Happy New Year to the Broncos fans who have stuck by the boys thoughout the season. Hopefully, the RMN will be here for 2009? If not, well, we'll have to move to the Denver Post, but I prefer the RMN, as I'm sure, many others do. It was a hell of a run by the Broncos, considering the injuries the team suffered. 2009 will be a good year for the Broncos. I feel it, deep down. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SE7EN, that post was a masterpiece.
Hindsight is 20/20, but I'm pretty sure none of us know the future. So in order to at least try to predict how this team is going to do in the coming years, we sort of have to look back at the last few.
I'll take the possibility of better days ahead over the high probability of continuing along near .500 with a crap defense and special teams.
Bring on the new era!

Don't you ever learn? How is YOU throwing up ancient history any different than 'rayduhfan' throwing up his Superbowls? And then to top it off, the posters below you do just that. How did those SB's serve you in SD last Sunday...? LOL...
MAYBE when the pony organization QUITS living in the past of the horsefaced one, you guys can get above .500 but no, you're 24-24 over the last 3 years.
Yes, jackie cutlet is going to the pro-bowl but I'm sure Rivers would rather have the playoff game check, the franchise would rather have that HUGE chunk of NBC cash and half the roster will collect incentive money with playoff clauses.
Again, welcome back, rayduhs, you were a more worthy opponent anyway.

Dynamic: As for your justifying "Handcuff dome" I'm surprised you would even show a semblence of lowering yourself to his level be it by design or mistake. Take this the way you want. Until you have walked in my shoes and have been denied access to an OPPORTUNITY to even be considered in securing it soley due to your ethnicity don't even begin to try and understand or empathize. I'm in full agreement that EVERYONE should be qualified to be in and retain their position rather than tokenship, nepotism or the like. However, just how the hell can that be determined if the preconcieved ideas are allowed to be the status quo in ACCESS DENIED due to not being blue eyed and etc.? This is 2009 and not 1969!! As far as "Handcuff" should have worded it better you've got to be kidding. You can't make a silk purse out of a Sow's ear!

the big game...like the 2006 AFC playoff game between SD & New England? Yeah we all remember that game chargertom. Did'nt SD have a bye week? Two weeks to get ready against Tom Brady and the Chargers blow it! Nice...real nice!
But Saturday nite, since your into REAL QB's, pay attention to the NFL MVP. You do know who Peyton Manning is right...? And if you're still not sure about who the QB's are in this league, maybe you can take a day off from the car wash and watch the Pro Bowl!

I believe a good portion of what has ailed the Broncos has been the inability to match a d-system to the players we have had. It's not good enough to be a talent-evaluator. You must also be able to pick college players and free-agents that "fit" the system being run by the d-coordinator. I understand that talent is as important as anything to having a successful team. I think our lack of consistency with d-schemes and players not being put into the best situations to exploit their talent, has worsened an already weak D. It's exactly the same thing that makes Shanny such a great offensive mind. I just wish he would have had the same eye for defensive players as he did on the offensive side.
Let's hope P. Hillis comes back strong. I think we would have won two or three more games this season if he'd been running the ball all year long. We ate up time and wore out defenses with Hillis running the ball. With Hillis's surprising quickness and power, not to mention soft hands, he's the guy I want to see carrying the ball.
