Poll

Do you agree with the Broncos' decision to fire coach Mike Shanahan?

— A year ago, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen sat in his well-appointed office at the team's Dove Valley complex, contemplating his team's failure to make the playoffs, and said:

"I'm of the opinion we've got one of the best coaches, head coaches, in the league. We're going to have our good years and our bad years — that's just the way our business works — but I think Mike's a very, very good coach and got quite a bit of time left on his current contract. ... Mike's not going anywhere."

And by all accounts Tuesday, Bowlen looked out on this season's playoff miss — the team's third consecutive year out of the postseason — an 8-8 finish and a defense that staggered through the season.

Then he shocked the NFL.

After 14 years, Bowlen fired the winningest coach in Broncos history, parting ways with Mike Shanahan, who had delivered his only two Super Bowl trophies.

"After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos," Bowlen said in a statement. "This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.

"I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history."

Bowlen could not be reached for additional comment. Shanahan did not return messages. Both were expected to speak publicly at a news conference at 11 a.m. today.

Shanahan, who had two stints as a Broncos assistant coach to go with his tenure as a head coach, is 154-102 as a head coach with two Super Bowl wins.

Three league sources said Tuesday afternoon that in a short meeting, Bowlen had wanted Shanahan to make changes on the team's coaching staff, particularly with defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, and that Shanahan had refused.

Slowik is considered one of Shanahan's closest friends in the league — the two have known each other since being on the University of Florida's coaching staff from 1980 to 1982.

Shanahan had said immediately after the Broncos' season-ending loss in San Diego on Sunday night that there would be no change at defensive coordinator.

Privately, some Broncos officials quickly were disputing Tuesday night that Slowik's future was the tipping point, claiming Shanahan's departure has more to do with the erosion in the day-to-day relationship between Bowlen and Shanahan.

Defense a sore spot

As team officials said former general manager Ted Sundquist was fired after the 2007 season when he and Shanahan no longer communicated well enough to coexist in their jobs — Bowlen called it "dysfunctional" — there was a feeling at the Broncos complex the same kind of separation was growing between Shanahan and Bowlen in recent seasons.

There also was the matter of performance on the field and what was perceived as an increasing unrest among the fan base.

Since the team won the Super Bowl to close the 1998 season, the Broncos have one playoff win — against the Patriots in the divisional round in 2005 — and have missed the playoffs six times in the past 10 years, including the past three.

"I've known Mike for a long time, he's a good, good friend, and I've also gotten the opportunity to get to know Pat Bowlen very well over the years as well," said Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, a longtime Shanahan friend from their days on the San Francisco 49ers staff. "And I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I'm disappointed this couldn't work out for both of them for whatever reason.

"The Broncos will continue to be a quality organization, and Mike is certainly capable of winning a lot of games. I know now that they've both decided to go different directions they'll both be successful."

Slowik, who joined the Broncos staff in 2005 as a defensive backs coach, was in his first season calling the defensive plays. The Broncos surrendered 448 points this season, breaking the franchise record of 409 points in 2007.

Free agents fell short

Bowlen looked visibly shaken after Sunday's loss to the Chargers. In that game, the Broncos allowed season highs in yards (491), rushing yards (289) and points (52). It also meant for the year, the defense finished 29thin the league overall and ranked 24th or worse in 16 major categories.

The Broncos also finished 4-4 at home this season — only the second time in Shanahan's tenure the team did not have a winning record at home.

Shanahan had taken plenty of public criticism for free-agent signings such as running back Travis Henry, who was arrested on federal drug chargers earlier this year after a failed one-year stint with the team; punter Todd Sauerbrun, who was suspended four games for using banned substances and later cut after an altercation with a Denver cab driver; and defensive tackle Daryl Gardener, who signed a seven-year, $34.8 million contract in 2003 and then in July of that year tore ligaments in his right wrist during an early-morning altercation outside an Aurora pancake house.

Two of Shanahan's 2008 free agents, linebacker Niko Koutouvides and safety Marlon McCree, were in uniform down the stretch, but both were game-day inactives Sunday against the Chargers.

Also, until showing a greater commitment to the draft the past three years, the Broncos went through a stretch in which their draft picks didn't stay on their roster.

No players remain from the 2003 draft class, players who would have just completed their sixth seasons.

Linebacker D.J. Williams was the only player from the 10-member draft class in 2004 to still be on the roster until running back Tatum Bell was re-signed this past season, and Karl Paymah is the only player from the 2005 draft class — one that included the late Darrent Williams.

While it was unclear how many members of Shanahan's coaching staff, if any, would be retained, Tuesday's move could present a huge financial commitment for the Broncos if Shanahan or any assistant coaches who are fired don't take jobs with other teams.

Shanahan has three years remaining on his current contract, which was to go through 2011, so the Broncos would owe him in the neighborhood of $21 million if he didn't take another job during the next three years.

Financial complications

But some in the league believed Tuesday night that Shanahan, a two-time Super Bowl winner who is tied for 15th in NFL history in coaching victories, quickly would become a candidate for the New York Jets job with the possibility of working with son Kyle, who currently is the Texans' offensive coordinator.

The Broncos assistant coaches also are under contract through at least the 2009 season, and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who had drawn interest from the University of Tennessee, recently was given a two-year extension by Shanahan and is under contract through 2011.

All of those contracts would have to be paid as well if those coaches were fired and didn't get jobs with other teams.

It could have quite a financial impact on the Broncos, who are facing a cash crunch like many businesses in tough economic times.

Shanahan also had complete power over the team's football operations, so Bowlen could face additional expenditures if he makes an expected move toward a more traditional general manager/head coach structure.

Jim Goodman is the Broncos' vice president of football operations/player personnel, and he had Shanahan's ear on all personnel matters because of a long relationship. Jeff Goodman, Jim's son, and Brian Xanders, who had been hired from the Atlanta Falcons last offseason, are assistant general managers.

Longtime associates of Bowlen said Tuesday night that in the past, he has leaned toward people he knows when facing major decisions that would determine the direction of the search, but those associates also quickly pointed out Tony Dungy was on the top of the team's list of candidates in 2001 when Shanahan was in the hunt for the University of Florida job.

If the Broncos chose to retain Bates because of his contract situation and close relationship with quarterback Jay Cutler and hired a coach with a defensive background, the Titans' Jim Schwartz is expected to receive consideration.

Fisher long has said Schwartz is "ready to be a head coach."

Other candidates could be former Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

If the team wanted to lean toward former Broncos assistants with offensive backgrounds, Mike Heimerdinger and Gary Kubiak could be potential candidates.

Heimerdinger is the Titans' offensive coordinator and Kubiak is believed to have two more years remaining on his contract as coach of the Texans.

He was fired. F-I-R-E-D. Fired. Feel free to stop brown-nosing Shanahan any time now. He stinks. Looking forward to having a team with real drive and fire now, instead of year after year of end-of-the-season implosions.

Thanks for the good years, Mike. I still remember being scared to death that the first SB with TD was going to end like the three before it. Watching the seconds tick down to 0:00 was one of the happiest moments of my life.

But that was ten years ago. Now I look forward to a bright future with a high-powered offense and hopefully a much-improved defense.

The fact that Bowlen had the stones to actually do this bodes well for the future. I would love to see a real GM and a defensive-minded coach step into the breech.

Steve Spagnuolo would be a good fit I think. He wouldn't have to worry about the offense, and if he could team up with a quality GM to improve the defense and ST, we could be back in this thing very soon.

    Good luck, Mike.

I am deeply sorry that Shanahan is going. Given this season's vicissitudes with injuries especially having no fit running backs combined with a poor defense. I hope that this is not just a kneejerk reaction and that Mike will not go to another team and come back to haunt us. I have no idea who will replace him but he had better be good. There is no substitute for experience and I would have preferred him to be there for at least another couple of years to guide Cutler into Elwayland. We shall see. Meanwhile Mike, thanks for the memories especially of the Superbowls (even the ones we lost). Good luck in the future. An end of an era and a sad moment indeed. I hope the Broncos future is bright but I am not sure that this is the cleverest move.

Angryman1n, you're a jerk. If you think they will cut a Pro Bowl QB, you're more ignorant then I thought. He has a little more then 2 years under his belt in actual playing time. I recall Rivers was on the bench for 2 years before he actually played. Get a clue and quit spouting off, simply to be an a$$.

Squatch, agreed. They need quality. Schottenheimer or Cowher. I doubt if Marty would want to play for Denver, after all the drummings they gave him, but you never know. Cowher can get the D looking strong. The offense looks good. I would say our defensive coach is on his way out. ST's, also.

bronco4428, why are you using the handle, "bronco4428", yet dissing the Broncos fans? I liked Shanahan and defended him but you singled out all of the Broncos fans in general? Confusing? If you need to bash someone, bash people like angryman1n who thinks they should cut Cutler. He's the one deserving of a good bashing.

Shocking. Thought Shanahan had one more year to turn things around, but after this past month's collapse, the horrible state of their defense and the revolving door of scapegoat coaches Shanny was firing on a yearly basis, I can see why Bowlen thought it was time for a change. I hope Bowlen has a plan/someone in mind good enough to replace Shanahan with (Cowher, Cowher, Cowher) to upgrade/address the two major needs of this team, defense and the need of a rushing attack to assist Cutler's passing game.

The one thing that sticks in my gut is that the Chargers are probably loving that they we're the last team that played a major role in Shanahan's demise. That's why I'm going to become a Colts fan this week and will be pulling for Manning to make the Chargers victory celebration short and bittersweet. My comment to anyone else who says "who is a better replacement?" is, well anyone! What record and experience did he bring when he came to the Broncos? It is ridiculous to say that there is no one better to replace him. The Broncos are better off with a fresh start. The offense is in place, they need a running back. What this team needs is a mentally tough coach who preaches defense. With that you then give the offensive duties to an offensive coordinator. You also give the GM duties to, yes you got it a GM. It was too much, he had too much control. This is a good day for the Broncos. Anyone who thinks that this is a bad thing needs to open their eyes, this team and organization is mediocre at best and was going NO WHERE! The arrogant head coach and his arrogant predictions and total control mentality is gone. Hopefully Bowlen thinks long and hard about the positions open and gets a great GM in here who can evaluate talent. Shanny may have been a great coach but was a terrible GM and front office man, that is what got his arrogant mug fired!

Face it, Shanahan did great things with Elway and Terrell, but since then, with him in charge, the Broncos have slowly gone south. An 11-5 season, loss to Baltimore, 2 season of 10-6 lost to colts, and one of the worst 13-3 teams to reach the AFC championship in 2005. I have been in the stands for years, and that 2005 season people in the stands felt like it wasn't for real, AND it wasn't. We were always holding our breath hoping we would sneak into the superbowl.

Everyone asking for Cowher or Marty; yes they're good coaches but I would rather have new blood.

The Steelers have done it with Tomlin and my choice would be Spagnoulo from the Giants. He's a defensive man, young with energy and enthusiasm. Bowlen is no dummy, he's been on the phones since Sunday night. I don't think he would've made this move without an ace up the sleeve. This was an 8-8 team with no defense. It's also a fact that sometimes you need to start fresh in order to build anew. Shanahan's message no longer resonated in the locker room. It's like a car alarm in a parking lot - so much noise but no longer any substance.
It became the same thing year after year. Start 4-1 or 6-2 and then crap the bed in December. No good.

Think if this guy gets a running game, and a defense that can stop somebody we will go to a super bowl. My gosh open your eyes. I suppose you think we should trade Champ too!

Didn't think Bowlen would have the stones to fire the prodigal son -head coach for life. Shanahan is a perfect example of a coach staying too long as players were definitely tuning him out. If it weren't for John Elway the genius tag would have never been ascribed to Shanahan. Napoleon Shanahan was constantly finding scapegoats for the innumerable coaching changes, incredibly bad personnel decisions and the firing of the respected Ted Sundquist.
His arrogance precluded him from allowing the team to bring in a front office football man and now the Broncos can bring in a new face to lead them.

    DUMBEST MOVE EVER!!!!!

Bowlen has no loyalty whatsoever. This man has given 21 years of his life to an organization and had many successful seasons. This year's team had injuries galore and as a result, the team cohesion was disrupted. As a former coach, chemistry amongst players is one of the key ingredients in developing an entire unit. Very difficult to have that with players coming in and going out like a revolving door due to injuries.

You don't assess a situation over a few short days and make a decision like this. If the Broncos won the 1 out of the last 3 games, this would most likely not have the same ending. If anything as an owner, you sit down with YOUR FRIEND of 21 seasons and talk about assistant coach staff changes or new player personnel strategies, not firing a man who has given so much to the organization.

Bowlen and company may think the grass is greener on the other side, but all will soon find out that Shanahan was and still is the face of the Denver Broncos. Better hope Bowlen does an exceptional job in the draft and free agent market, otherwise the team is going nowhere but down at a rapid speed!

Every one looks at things so black and white or right and wrong,,,I give Kuddos to Bowlen for making this gutsy move, It had to be a difficult decision. Shanahan will always be remembered for the good things he was a part of, and the Super Bowls victories. It was time for a new direction with this organization, things had become stale and very predictable. The personnel decisions by Shanahan were the reason they had a non NFL caliber defense and Bowlen had to feel it was time to get a GM in here especially with all the upcoming draft picks. If he can land a Bill Cowher it would be a good move, but anyone who thinks they are going to the Super Bowl next year needs to be re-evaluated. It will take some time to get this defense rebuilt and find a good running back, but it is exciting to have some change and a new direction. Mike Shanahan will have the opportunity to coach probably even next season. I think he is an above average coach, I do not think he is an excellent coach, however I do believe if he goes somewhere and his only responsibility is to coach with a good GM he can be successful. I thought his so called offensive genius resulted in a lot of yardage but very little points over the years and I think that will be his downfall wherever he ends up. Sincerely, I hope the Broncos are again a contender in this league in a few years and that Shanahan has success where he ends up.

While this news is a bit shocking, Pat Bowlen did the right thing by firing Shanahan. The magic was clearly gone from the Super Bowl years, and this year really made it clear that he was not going to turn things around. Plus, Shanahans poor decisions in evaluating both draft and free agent talent over the years cannot be overlooked, as well as his "revolving door" strategy of hiring/firing defensive coaches. Finally, one must not forget that it was Dan Reeves who largely put together the pool of talent that won the Super Bowls; in many ways, Shanahan only reaped the benefits from Reeves' personnel decisions. Pat Bowlen has never been afraid to spend money, and I feel confident that he will hire the very best coach and staff to make Denver a force to be feared in the NFL.

It certainly is a shock but since Shanahan was responsible for all personnel decisions, the buck has to stop with him. Perhaps being all things diluted his coaching effectiveness. The defense was terrible without a clear field leader (like Al Wilson), but Shanahan put those people on the field. Not to give Slowik a pass but he had to coach who was there.

I hope this is also a wakeup call to the other coaches and to the players. Your owner isn't just sitting by in his raccoon coat. He wants results. Either Cowher or Schottenheimer would be great to bring in. Kubiak wanted to go home to Texas and I don't think he's an option. Elway isn't a good option either because he's been out of the day-to-day stuff for too long. Cowher would be better because he was able to take the Steelers deep into the playoffs more than once and knows how to fire up a team. Marty's teams always choked in the first round of the post-season. Bowlen wants a championship and he's tired of waiting. I think he'd be willing to bring a top coach in.

Shanahan brought respectability to Denver and made the Broncos one of the elite teams. I'm very grateful for what he did. Unfortunately, all good things must end. Best of luck and thank you.

I'm not happy to see him go but I do think it was time for a change. Will the Broncos be better off without him? Only time will tell but again, it was time for a change. This team was getting awfully predictable and a lot of that is coaching. Granted, injuries, dropped passes, and poor tackling were also hallmarks in a season gone awry, but it seemed there was some passion lacking on the sidelines as well.

This will be one of those situations where if Shanahan takes a head coaching job somewhere else, whatever team it is will excel and Shanahan will be in top form; I just don't see that happening if he would have stayed with the Broncos.

That said, I think Cowher would be a good fit for this team. I definitely don't see the offense grinding to a halt, but I do see the defense improving. Look at it this way. Most coaches would have been fired after the second destruction of the Broncos by the Colts. But not Shanahan, Bowlen stuck with him, then shortly afterwards you had the make believe 13-3 season that happened on luck alone, until Pitts showed us our true defensive colors, and a QB that can't win without a lead (plummer).

Shanahan couldn't get fired after the 2005 season, however lucky it was, Bowlen may have had the shanny glasses on and decided to go with him. Then you have the last 3 years. That defense has been on the decline for much longer than that. I'd say since 2000 there has not been any improvement. However, what is covered up during the super bowl years is that our defense stunk then too! We had the worst yards per rush against our defense back then too!

Maybe Bowlen offered to let him retain his job minus the GM duties, but his ego balked at the idea. Either way, I think a change is needed. The defense has regressed each of the last three seasons. We need to stop the bleeding NOW.

Shanahan was a victim of his very bad personnel decisions on defense.

A great offensive minded coach that consistently had his offensives in the top 10 every year, even this year with 7 different running backs, was incredible to say the least.

But on the other side of the coin, he was absolutely horrible in selecting defensive talent or relied too much on others to make those horrible decisions both in the draft and free agency.

The insane contract bonuses given to defensive players that have contributed absolutely nothing, including Bly, had to have some ramifications on the decision made today.

My fear is that he may be going to San Diego after they lose this Sunday. They have the ingredients for a great offense and sure their defense isn't very good this year, but they have a DC in Rivera, will get Merriman back next year and only need a few tweaks in their secondary which can be fixed through the draft.

Don't get me wrong I don't like the Bolts but you can't deny how far ahead they are of Denver right now.

In Broncoland, next year is a write-off no matter who is in charge, just look at the schedule. Maybe they can rebound in 2010 after a couple good drafts (fingers crossed).

Thanks for the memories Mike. The Superbowls were great and you were a big part of that, but that was 10 years ago and times have changed.

I honestly thought that making the playoffs this year with such a young team and a rebuilt roster would be a real feat... but watching them roll over the last three weeks gave me pause, and I'm glad Bowlen had the stones to make the move, because I'm not sure I would have!

That said, the real challenge comes not from axing Shanny... it comes from finding a replacement who can take a team of young, talented players and build a new Denver dynasty. I think Cowher is a great choice, but I also believe Billick, Mariuci or even Shottenheimer would be great picks. It's a target-rich environment, so Bowlen should take his time and find the right guy.

Shanny will land on his feet (guarantee you they've already called from San Francisco) and he'll build a winner elsewhere. I think things here just got TOO comfortable. I certainly don't wish him ill, and I hope he does well... he's the best we've ever had, and he'll be tough to replace. Ideally, he'll move to the college ranks and become the next Pete Carroll... Good luck, Shanny.

More importantly, good luck Pat... we're counting on you to make a good call on this one. With the young talent we have, we cannot afford another Wade Phillips era, so get it right the first time!

Shanahan's seeming unwillingness to let go of any control of this team has lead them to mediocrity at best, and his putting the blame on everyone else but him, firing coaches (the ones he hired in the first place), makes me wonder if he has/had a viable plan anymore or if he was just spitballing to see what would stick. but none of this means we're gonna turn into the Lions, people, so get a grip. none of this means it's gonna take 5 years to turn this around. Pat Bowlen is one of the most respected owners in the league and i'm sure he will do all the he can to find a suitable replacement, and perhaps one that will take us back to a championship level. you don't know what's gonna happen, so just let it play out.

Very, very, very, poor decision. Shanahan is a hall of fame coach. He was rebuilding this team and that takes time. They are only 3 years removed from AFC Championship Game. Most the players on this team have 3 or less years experience and yet they showed lots of promise. The defense needs better players sure but the team does not need a new head coach. Most teams in the league right now would give up their coach for Shanahan, there will be teams that have good coaches that might fire that coach to bring in Shanahan, after all his resume is better than any coach right now except for Billicheck. For those who are looking for Cower to come in don't count on it. 1 he just turned down both the Jets and browns and told them I am not coaching again take me off your list. The coach that comes in will be from our current staff sine they also are all under contract, or a nobody because we don't have the money to pay Shanahan 7 million a year that we still owe him and also pay high profile coach at the same time. Because of Shanhans new mansion he will probably take a year off and just collect a check without the stress while he watches this team completely self destruct under a new and inexperienced coach. The all the star offensive players who have express their discuss with the decision will leave once their contracts are up which Cutler, Marshall, Sheftler, Dumervill, are all up at the end of 2009. Shanahan will then come back and go to KC and take 3 out of the 4 since we can not franchise all of them and KC will then walk all over us for years to come.

The end of that year he cleaned house on the d side sending Gerrard Warren and others packing. To me, that was the beginning of the end. I'm not saying JP was the long term answer, but he won a lot of games for this team. When Culter grows up, he might also, but it will take 3-5 years to repair the damage of Shanny's poor drafts in 2006-07. Too much power can be a bad thing.

Get rid of dead weight (Dre bly, Dewayne Robertson, Mccree, Webster, Prater), lets give Moss and Crowder a chance under the right scheme to prove their worth. I think Barret will be a great safey, and Woodyard should be starting over Boss. Draft a Great MLB and FS, make some SMART free agent aquistions defensively. Go for Peppers or Haynesworth, or both, we have the cap room, peppers along side of Haynesworth, Marcus and Elvis, your secondary alreay has gotten better with no moves back there. Oh well, it is done now and not as though any of us really had a say in it (even though some of you clearly believe otherwise). For all of you chanting Cowher's name and hell, all the other obvious names that even an 8 year old football fan could rattle off: wake up. It is not anywhere close to that simple. There are plenty of variables here. Whether Bates stays or goes is a huge one. What offensive scheme gets implemented is another one. That list goes on and on and on. Just bringing in a "name" is not going to make this a better team. You guys just rejoiced at a "name" being kicked out. I would like to hear Rod Smith's take on this decision. I think Shanny could have lured Rod into something here at some point. Something another coach won't find value in. I guess for me this all boils down to I am a Broncos fan. That won't change. However, I will follow whatever team Shanny ends up on and root for them whenever it is not directly against the Broncos. Same thing I do with Kubiak and the Texans. Best of luck Mike. Who cares about the end-zone follies or pounding your chest when all you did was the job you were paid to do. Try showing a little class and SKILL.

Cowher is not sure where he wants to go, as of yet. I'm sure we will know very, very, soon. This is ridiculous! Bronco fans are soo spoiled! Bad seasons in any other city are 3-13 or 4-12. But 8-8 is a bad season for Denver. 16 players on IR and 7 running backs out, all of the starting linebackers missing significant time, Champ Bailey out half the year, but they still did not have a losing record? Hmm seems like a pretty successful year to me! You have to be careful what you wish for, before you know it the Broncos will be picking in the top 3 of the draft! Sad day for REAL Bronco fans, and for people who really think that there is a better coach out there.

DDave, from what I gather, Cowher does not want to return to coaching in 2009 no matter who for. Of course this could all change now that one of the premier coaching job in the NFL is available. I'm not sure he would be the right fit for our offense, he is all running (which I love) but he may not be able to keep Cutler and Co. happy, he is very conservative.

The good thing is they are many options out there and most of the top candidates will probably wait to see in what direction the Broncos will want to go before they sign up anywhere else. This is the best job available, Nobody in his right mind would take the Jets job over ours considering the New-York frenzy. That's as tough as it gets there. Anyway, this is totally exciting.

Yes that is true. But that is certainly not the norm. That is an incredible aberration. You think this happens all the time? The turnaround the Dolphins have made (thanks to Parcells and their surprise coach Sparano) is shocking. I mean Sparano was never even a coordinator let alone head coach. So, that is truly fluky. How can you predict that? The Ravens or Harbaugh I should say did a great job getting that Defense back on track and the Falcons are the biggest shocker of them all. But come on dude, the planets all need to line up PERFECTLY for this to happen.

Bowlen did NOT need to fire Shanahan. If he didn't like his personnel decisions he could have just installed a GM (not necessary though because Shanahan had the GOODMANS and Xanders and they were beginning to pay HUGE dividends). I mean, Jauron just had his THIRD consecutive 7-9 season and he is keeping his job. This was the biggest bone-head move ever. Shanahan's offensive game-planning is still the best in the business.

We failed to make the playoffs for 3 lousy years. How spoiled do our fans have to be we gotta run the man outta town for 3 non-playoff seasons. I mean, we were working in a new QB for Chrissakes. This is so freaking stupid.

Bowlen may regret this one. Look at Fisher and the Titans. Are they great year in and year out? No. They have no SB victories. Just one appearance. And look how long Fisher has been around. Is he on the hot seat this year? Would Shanny be let go if we had their record? I know, I know, we don't have their record. We did just 3 years ago, and the Titans did not. Can someone explain to me why the NFL seems to suffer no ill consequences of these tough economic times. I hope more coaches are fired, more players are let go of their excessive contracts. We need to get back to a time when this was a game and not strictly a business. Coaches should make $200,000 a year and players should make maybe $500,000-$2mil a year tops. Seats should be made affordable and not be handed over to corporate clients. There are probably people in Denver who recently lost a job, and instead of giving up their thousand dollar bronco seats would rather eat ramen noodles for a year. Everyone else in America is being asked to cut back their salaries, even the Soap actress Susan Lucci has received a huge pay deduction, but for some reason it's OK to pay a team of Broncos millions of dollars for a mediocre performance, or any other team. The real story is the money here. If Bowlen can't get a superbowl win in the next few years that means less corporate sponsors, right? Times are changing and these athletes, coaches and others need to realize that. The best thing Bowlen could do is hire someone who is new to the scene. Maybe a college coach? Pay him something reasonable and show that you don't have to have a flashy guy like Shanny heading up your team to win big.

Dynamicdave I really don't know how deep Bowlen's pockets are when it comes to a new head coach. I can look at what was said today on the N.F.L. Network by Adam Schefter and see Bowlen not budging in giving out a lot of cash since much is still owed to Mike. I have no idea as to whom the next one will be, but given my dreathers, I'd like to see Cowher come in and rebuild this defense. Given what has been rumored that he is going to sit out '09, I'd like to think that his mind can be changed by Pat Bowlen, even without the big time cash. If Bowlen can't get Cowher then I'd like to see him go after Scott Pioli of NE as his GM; and that's the other rub with Cowher...he wants to bring in his own personell man. Haven't been able to find out who that person is for Cowher, have you? One of the bloggers thought that this year was an abberation for the first year headcoaches brought in by the 'fins, Ravens, and the Falcons. I don't believe that it was an abberation, but rather the trend in this new form of salary cap N.F.L. One thing is for sure, this league isn't my dad's N.F.L.!!! There are no more 5 year plans, or even three year plans...at the most you'll get two. Harbaugh in Baltimore is a coach's son. His dad was part of Bo Schembeckler's crew in Ann Arbor. The man in Atlanta was in Jacksonville as their DC, and we all know what they did the last six seasons down there. Mike Smith is one hell of a coach, and the Jags did every thing they could to keep him. Arthur Blank and his GM from the NE tree did their homework before they hired him. Bill Parcells has it in his current contract with the 'fins that when Hiezinga steps aside, he can too. Granted, that would be for a buy-out, but I'd really like to see what this Denver team could accomplish with a Parcell's defense; and Parcells wasn't a slouch on offense either. A lot of people forget what he did with the Giants, Pats, and Jets. He is probably the best evaluator of horse-flesh in the game today. No I don't buy into the doom and gloom, but am realistic enough to know that if Bowlen doesn't do his homework, then this team could be down for the next 3-5 years. I think it would be more prudent to go for the GM first, but I think that for some reason Cowher is going to end up here in Denver.

Well, this was a surprise, as I thought he'd get one more year due to the circumstances that occurred this season, but I'm not disappointed either. Shanahan had been digging his own grave when he threw Jake Plummer under the bus in 2006 despite his conservative play-calling and putting all the burden on the defense to win games (a strategy that came to a screeching halt when the Colts finally torched them midway through the season) This year, he put all the burden on the offense to win games, and mediocrity and a defense that made the 1988 squad look like the Baltimore Ravens resulted.

Yeah, he won us two Super Bowls, and those will be cherished and the credit is due to him for that, but the facts don't lie--this team has missed the playoffs 6 out of the last 10 years, and except for the 2005 squad, was manhandled in the first round every single time. Shanahan's Super Bowl wins and the fluke run in 2005 bought him far more time than most coaches would have gotten in the same situation.

It's going to be interesting to see who Bowlen hires. Shanahan was the right guy at the right time back in 1995, but other than Spagnuolo or Rex Ryan, I can't think of anyone that stands out among the potential crop of candidates.(Forget Garrett, he's waiting for Wade to get axed) Cowher is a pipe dream unless Bowlen offers him and INSANE amount of money, and with the assistants under contract through 2009, that's not likely to happen. I love Schottenheimer's ability as a coach, and his teams seem to win with regularity, but god bless him, he just can't get over the hump in the playoffs.

I really thought that they would have taken into consideration all the injuries and given him one more year. But if he wasn't in tune to letting the DC go I can see where Bowlen was coming from. Although the last thing this team needed was to start out with a new DC and defensive scheme, it was obvious that the current DC wasn't going to get it done. We will miss Mike and it's going be really strange not seeing him when training camp starts. Please! No retreads! No Cower! No Marty! No Bilichik! They need to get a strong GM and let him hire his HC based on similar ideals. They need to make sure that they keep the offense on its current track and bring in a real defensive guru to run the defense. I'm going to have bad dreams about Shanny going to KC or SD and do to the Broncos what he has done to the faiders. Good luck wherever you go Mike but I hope it's in the NFC :-)

At this point the question of why is moot. It happened. Shanahan is no longer the coach, as weird as that sounds. So let's move on.

What about some of the other question marks?

Is Bowlen going to do the right thing and hire a real GM? What happens to the rest of the coaching staff? Will there be a change in offensive philosophy or personnel? Who stays on defense? What scheme are we going to employ? Will the next HC be offensive- or defensive-minded?

I find it kind of exciting in a surreal sort of way. The one thing I really don't want to see is a new HC that might come in and screw with the offense. It's close to greatness. Don't mess with a good thing.

I read the article in the RMN about Steve Spagnuolo, and he seems like a good guy. I especially liked the fact that he was willing to adapt when required. That is a good attribute for a head coach. If we don't get him, I'd like to see us snag someone else from the defensive side of the ball. NO RETREADS.

BTW, there's a great interview with Mark Schlereth on ESPN.com regarding the Shanahan firing. Worth checking out.

Can't win consistently without a good defense and this team has lacked a good defense for YEARS. Shanahan was hoping his team could put up 35 pts. per game and let the Defense stay poor. It is about time this team got a defensive minded coach who knows what it means to build from the D-line. Shanahan only seemed to think that having a stockpile of DB's was the answer to the horrible pass defense. After getting shredded in the air by Manning 2 years in a row and the Steelers, Shanahan goes off and drafts a crapload of DB's and trades for 2 expensive pro bowlers, Bailey and Bly. Wake up mike! If your D-line doesn't pressure the QB, the best DBs in the world are useless.

Shanahan's offense has always been one of the most fun to watch when he has a QB that can sling it. Bowlen better find another mastermind to keep the offense going or he'll really hear it from the fans.

Who knew Moss would be a bust and Lynch meant so much to our D? And that's just it. It is not popular to be honest and talk about who we would've chose. Bottom line is he was PAID to be right all the time and I understand that. I don't think that is realistic though. He's gone and I will support the coach they bring in. Gonna miss that coach though. I was profoundly saddened to learn of Coach Shanahan's firing, even though I'm acutely aware of the reasons behind it. Having been a fan since 1960 and in attendance at Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII (among other Broncos SB appearances), those wonderful memories will be indelibly etched in my memory. Frankly, the "anti-Shanny" posts are sickening to me and totally disrespectful to a man who is still among the top-5 coaches in the NFL and who coached the Broncos to their greatest glory. OK. Fine. Now what? Among "outsiders," Marty Schottenheimer (as GM or coach - and a former real estate sales person in Denver) represents interesting potential irony; Jon Gruden (I have no idea if he's available and/or interested) is a proven leader who, I believe, would quickly gain the much-needed trust and respect of Jay Cutler. Both men are considered to be oriented toward the "defensive" side of the ball. On the "inside," I don't see John Elway as a head coach or general manager, but he could be more "hands-on" in Cutler's development. Rick Dennison MUST GO. His departure is long overdue. Kubiak won't likely come back. Parcells (ex-AFA) has ties to Colorado. Apart from that and, under any circumstances, the special teams need extra-special attention. Their failures cost the 2008 Broncos in many more ways than might be evident in the final scores. No matter what...Go, Broncos!

Bellechik has his issues, however he seems to always be the leader of that team, but he does not carry the title of GM! In Seattle, Holmgren wore both hats until just 3 years ago, what happened when he stopped being GM; they go to the Superbowl! Wearing both "hats" so to speak is just too difficult and time consuming for one person to be able to succeed at both, and usually they suffer in both duties. All that being said, WHY COWHER? He is just a mirror image of Shanahan, however in 15 years with the Steelers he only won 1 Superbowl, now I believe Cowher is an excellent coach, however if you give up a guy who has won 2 Superbowls because he won't relinquesh GM power, then where is the common sense in bring in the exact same mindset for a guy who was only able to win 1? The successful teams in today's NFL have a headcoach and GM who share the personnel responsibilites which gives a coach time to focus on coaching and a GM who has time to focus on players! This is a business, don't manage with your heart, manage with your HEAD! Let's start with a qualified GM and rebuild the team correctly!

IMO we need the defensive analogue to Billick. We need a guy that will come in and basically leave the offense alone, but work with a DC he trusts to get the defense out of the free fall they seem to be in now.

If we have a GM with final say on personnel, maybe even the special teams will improve. Better talent and depth on defense will only help that cause.

As for the offense, I hope they retain Bates and Dennison. Rick is a smart dude, and he has done great things with the OL and what little he's had to work with in the run game. Bates, I believe, will only get better.

In order to be great, you must have accountability. Toward the end of Mike's tenure, there was none.

The players play the game, and you play the game with the players you have. If the man responsible for acquiring the players can't put a complete team on the field, then the team won't succeed. Period.

I wouldn't trade Jay Cutler for any other QB in the league. He showed commitment and dedication last offseason when he worked with Marshall and Scheffler. He is not the problem.

Couldn't imagine standing in front of all those people, on national tv, and getting your heart ripped out and your rear end handed to you. If you have a competitive bone in your body, you know that WE haven't always handled those situations the way we would've liked.

Haven't felt this way as a Bronco fan since DW.

Be safe tonight and have a Happy New Years everyone.

I'm old enough to remember Curt Gowdy talking about how Johnny Unitas used to look like he was pouting when he messed up, especially at the end of SB-III; or how he looked when his team lost in the N.F.L. Championship to Jim Brown and the Cleveland Browns, just as he looked the year he and the Colts lost to Miami and Bob Griese the year they lost in the A.F.C. Championship one year after they had beat the 'boys in SB-V. Zoomy, what in God's greenearth could Cutler possibly have to talk about when he throws a pick? What is he supposed to look like, as if he didn't make the mistake? He is 23, he will mature, even Mike knew that and that is why Mike let it ride because he remembers how John looked when Mike was the assistant in Elway's early years in a Broncos uniform. Go ahead and dislike Cutler all you want, but given the class of qb's he came in with he is head and shoulders above Vince and Matt; you are seeing the maturation process of another great Broncos qb, not the way you'd want it done, but being done nonethenless. He'll learn not to call out his WR's when he overthrows them, or when one is too hurt not to be able to jump up for the overthrow, or when one just lets a good pass drop out of his hands. Zoomy, there were many in the Bronco' Nation that couldn't stand JE until he won those two SB's. It didn't matter how much I wanted everyone to love him, it wasn't going to happen. Even after JE won there still was a negative sentiment surrounding John. Same with Cutler. I think that I've been blessed to see two franchise qb's in the same lifetime with one organization. As he progresses in age and learns more about being a professional in the game, on the sidelines, and off the field, he will lose that crybaby look you see, the sulleness I see, and will acquire the look of a determined man...but it does take time for 20-somethings to hit that stride. I work with this age group day in and day out, and I have had to bail them out, pacify them, and to a lesser extent wipe their noses every now and then. When they hit that maturation point, and invariably they do, to me, it's like seeing a sunrise for the first time. This young man is going to take this team to a SB, and for all we know it may be next season. What you may see in Cutler maybe what you don't like about yourself Zoomy.

GJrodburner, you have much more patience with people like "Zoomy", then I do. I have patience with my kids in martial arts class, but that is a whole different matter. They understand what is expected of them and me. Zoomy is set in his way because, well, he's bandwagon, "if" a fan at all. You've seen the trolls, GJrodburner. I have never seen as many posts by people who we have never posted before, tell us that they have been saying "it" all year??? Not to "us" they haven't? They come out of the woodwork and bash. Such is their nature. But when they bash Jay, well that's different. Does jay need to grow up? Yes. Is he wrong for saying he's not pleased with Bowlens decision? No. Would the public prefer he lie when the media (Yes, people, he is a public figure and has to talk to the media. Do you?) asks him a question? Of course not. Jay speaks from his heart and because of his young age, maybe voices his opinion a bit stronger then others would prefer. I think his approach is refreshing. My students are taught to be upfront and honest. Don't disrespect, though. Jay disrespected nobody, including Pat, with his comment. Pat even sat down with Jay and said they had a positive conversation and jay is his man. When you become a high priced sports celeb and deal with the press everyday and come out "squeaky clean", then talk. I work with a few celebs. They are older, wiser and have gotten past their mistakes. They have made them when they were younger, but got passed it, regardless of their haters out there who made it more difficult by the bashing. I guess Jay isn't as "perfect" as the rest of you haters? He will grow up and grow wiser. Will you?

Dynamicdave you and I have had the privelage and honor to lead young men and women. We see the impossible become possible through arduous work and much, much learning. As much as a mentor can lend that guiding hand, sometimes it is the foot in the arse that has to be administered too. Jay Cutler doesn't strike me as a player that is going to need that boot. As with Zoomy, or anyone else that has a very negative outlook on all of this, and I won't lie, I'm still shaken...but not stirred by the events, this time right now is going to make this organization better. But for the haters, it is going to allow their inner character to shine through in all that they post. Although age does not bequeath wisdom, I've seen 18 year old men and women with the soul and mind of a 60-year old, and I've seen 25-year old (+) adults have the attitude of a two year old, Zoomy will either get it or not. His attitude can't be denied, but it doesn't have to be relative either. Let him hate. This great game of football mirrors life to some extent, and as of now, this event with Mike is like the death of a loved one...some of us understand this and knew that this day would happen, eventually given the record over the last three years and of course this season too. I wanted Mike replaced, but as I spoke with you and some of the other bloggers, I realized that I couldn't change your thoughts about that, and it was alright; I still loved the Broncos and respected (as much as possible, hell I don't walk on water, and with some of these shlubs you just can't help but post a little hate-back too!) those in the Nation. Mike is a beloved coach, has met his demise here...but unlike that parent that passes on, he'll get a reprise somewhere else. You can lead that horse to water and it will either drink or drown. The Cutler haters are taking on some water. That can change over time, although I doubt it will. Hell, there's still some out there that still hate Elway too!

GJrodburner, your perspective is always refreshing.

BTW, we're going to be fine. The more I ponder the post-Shanahan era, the more excited I get.

There are a lot of people on here who want to see this change as a negative. Since none of us knows the future, I'll chose to look at it as a chance to improve and mature as a team.

    Time will tell...

Thanks Jubei, I just hope that Dynamicdave is doing better. Every now and then this blogging site can be taken a tad too personal. He's a man, and I'm sure all is well. I like how you looked at this event as a maturation of the team, and for all we know a marshalling of all of our O-talent into the final deal. My concern has been the fact that the teams overall defensive scheme and talent is far worse than I ever thought possible. Still, if Miami, Atlanta, and to a lesser extent the Chargers could put it all together in a season, why can't the Broncos next season do it too?
