Nederland Police shot and killed a man at the side of Peakview Road after he shot a worker at the Eldora Ski resort today. The vehicle (on the left) had multiple gunshot holes on the windshield, and police said that they opened fire after the suspect shot at a sheriff's deputy (vehicle on the right - which had three bullet holes (two on the hood and one on the windshield).

Brian Mahon, General Manager of Eldora, was shot to death by a fellow employee Tuesday morning at the ski area.

Matthew Koehorst, 21, (an Eldora employee who was in the room when the shooting occurred) leaves the Nederland Community Center after witnessing the shooting the Eldora Ski Resort . Says Matthew: "Brian was just unlucky -- a complete fluke. If it wasn't Brian, it could've been me next. I was next in line. That was the most terrifying experience of my life. I'm not gonna go through that again."
NEDERLAND Authorities believe the gunman who killed the general manager at Eldora Mountain Resort Tuesday morning also killed his cat before embarking on a deadly rampage.
The gunman, Derik A. Bonestroo, 24, of Nederland, died during a standoff with a sheriff's deputy on a scenic highway several miles away not long after the shooting at Eldora.
Boulder Sheriff Cmdr. Phil West confirmed Wednesday that investigators found his cat dead from a knife or gunshot wound when they searched Bonestroo's apartment where he lived alone.
Officers also searched his parents' home in rural Boulder County near Hygiene, including the room where Bonestroo stayed.
Bonestroo, who was not well-known in the laid-back mountain community and had worked only this season as a lift operator, fired a bullet into the ceiling of the resort's locker room after saying something along the lines of: "I'm a Christian and if you're not a Christian I'm here to convert you."
West said that Bonestroo asked resort manager Brian Mahon about his own beliefs. Mahon told the gunman he was Catholic before being shot to death.
West said witnesses told conflicting accounts about what Bonestroo's exact words were.
This is what investigators say happened: Bonestroo walked into the locker room dressed in black, a pistol in his hand, shouting about religion before firing a shot into the ceiling.
Mahon, a 49-year-old married father of two daughters, was in an adjacent room and burst into the locker room when he heard the shot. Within seconds, the popular general manager lay dead.
Bonestroo graduated in 2003 from Lyons High School, where he played on the football team. He doesn't have a criminal record in Colorado, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
"His motive at this point is still open to speculation," West said.
'Very agitated and angry'
The trouble apparently started in town a little before 7 a.m. when Cynthia Davis, an employee at the local newspaper, the Nederland Mountain Ear, awakened to someone pounding on her front door. After Davis answered, she was confronted by a tall, slender man with a pistol strapped to his right thigh and dressed in black.
The man, whom Davis described as "very agitated and angry," was looking for some former neighbors of hers who worked at the ski area.
"I don't know where they are — leave me alone," she told the man, and he left.
Her neighbors, whom she did not identify, moved out of town recently. Davis said she did not call police, in part because she didn't believe her eyes as she stared at the pistol.
"I kept telling myself that it had to be a walkie- talkie or something because it didn't make sense why he would have a weapon," Davis said. "I thought he was a cop."
Five miles west of town, at the Eldora ski area, lift operators trickled into the locker room in the pump house near the base for their regular morning meeting. Outside, bitter winds howled through the valleys.
Shortly after 7 a.m., between 15 and 20 workers were in the room when Bonestroo entered.
Rob Linde, spokesman for the resort, said the man was a lift operator who had been hired for this ski season.
Bonestroo spewed something religious — a statement that was heard differently by witnesses.
"There are various interpretations of what was said," Cmdr. West said.
Then the man fired a single shot through the ceiling from his black handgun, West said.
Mahon, working in an adjacent room, stepped through a door to investigate.
According to witnesses, the shooter asked Mahon which religion he believed in. When Mahon answered that he was a Catholic, the shooter fired at him, several witnesses said. Bonestroo shot Mahon twice, once in the chest, once in the head.
"I was scared for my life — as scared as I've ever been," said Fabio Sales, who was in the room.
Several workers called 911. It was 7:26 a.m.
Gunbattle erupts
Deputy John Seifert, who has been with the department for nearly four years and had prior law enforcement experience, was on patrol in the area. After hearing the radio call, he sped toward the resort.
Near Nederland High School, on County Road 130, Seifert saw Bonestroo's gold Infiniti pass him going the other way. Seifert turned around to pursue the sedan.
In Nederland, Bonestroo turned onto Colorado 119, the winding two-lane road known as the Peak to Peak Highway for its majestic views of snow-capped mountains. About a mile south of the city, on a sweeping curve, Bonestroo pulled onto the shoulder.
A moment later, Bonestroo started firing at Seifert's Tahoe, which was parked about 60 feet behind him — either after opening the driver's door or leaning out the window, Cmdr. West said. Bullets tore through the radiator, hood and windshield, spraying Seifert with glass as he scrambled out the driver's door with his AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.
Seifert took up a position near the right rear corner of his vehicle, West said, and opened fire, killing Bonestroo, who slumped behind the wheel. Seifert escaped with some minor cuts.
As investigators worked at the scene, bullet holes could be seen in the back window and windshield of the Infiniti.
Someone living along the highway called 911 to report gunfire. That call came in at 7:36 a.m.
Resort reopened today
The ski area was closed Tuesday, but reopened today — and traffic was diverted around a section of Colorado 119 for most of the day.
West said investigators were perplexed as to what led to the violence. West said friends of the gunman indicated that he had been "experiencing some emotional crisis," but he did not elaborate.
News staff writer James B. Meadow contributed to this report.

This is what he heard. A lift operator for Eldora went to the main area where lessons are held (in between indian peaks lodge and the pumphouse/locker room area) with a 9mm and said anyone who was not his religion was going to die today. a manager at the resort confronted the lift operator and was then shot twice in the stomach. this occured in the pumphouse. the pumphouse holds the hoses and stuff for making snow, above that is the lift operators locker room and connected to that, is another ski instructor locker room. after that the shooter took off, shooting at a police car and then was shot about 2 miles down the road. i heard he was killed.
thats what i heard.

As 1 of the libertarians you chose to address in the above post, I will respond.
I am in no way a reactionary. Would I not be a reactionary, if, at every time a gun was used in a crime, to justify the elimination of our (yours and mine) Costitutional rights?
"Since Jonny has been a bad boy......the entire 2nd grade class will be kept in at recess......"
I love to see when people try to "trim down, reduce and eliminate" rights and freedoms of people, they ignore or fail to look at root causes to the problems. They look to "easy" answers, rather than look to solving the problem. Unfortunately this happens on both sides of the political aisle on different issues.
666 you may seem to think that it is ok to restrict rights and freedoms if it fits your idealogy...... but I will bet that there are times that some group has bit into your freedoms and rights and you have not taken kindly to that "bite".
The reality here is the fact that I as a Libertarian will stand side-by-side with you defending the loss of your freedoms and rights whether or not I agree or disagree with your point of view. Will you stand by others and I to defend the rights and freedoms of those you disagree with?

Drug usage may have been a factor. There are also paranoid delusional people who manage to hold it together during work, except they are quiet and so no one knows what is going on in their minds. Then they have a bad day and something like this occurs.
Good job by the police officer. This person could have stopped elsewhere (his apartment or house for example) and killed more people. I'm glad to see that the officer was backed up by his superior officer. It probably helps when an officer has a very bad day to have something nice said about him rather than treat him like a toxic entity (he will be on leave pending an investigation).

As many may know, though, there has been much debate as to whether or not the question was even asked, and if it were even answered. Despite a book being written on this exact incident, there are conflicting witness accounts as to what actually happened.
Among many other things, Harris and Klebold were staunchly atheist and had much hatred for established religion -- and society for that matter. This has been well documented and there is little doubt in the fact.
All these things said, my slightly subjective opinion is that the majority of these crazed killer situations are result of religious zealots rather than angry atheists. I don't think that participation in a specific religion is a cause -- but it is a correlation, most certainly.

The brain scrambles, trying to deal with what it can't believe it just saw. Witnesses will have differing accounts.

Cynthia Davis worked at the local newspaper & didn't pick up on this guys behavior and at least call the cops to alert them? Unbelievable.

When this all began, that dumb woman who said he was pounding on her door and said the guy seemed very agitated and angry and that even though she was staring at the gun she didn't call police because she didn't believe her own eyes.
What kind of crap is that?? She could have prevented this. What more did she need here.

There are many places in Colorado where carrying an open non-concealed firearm is perfectly legal. Hunters do it.
Cynthia Davis lives in one such mountain region. So, don't blame her for not calling the police right away, city boys. I've had armed men come knocking at my door. They were lost. So, I gave them directions.
Hindsight is 20:20 but there is no way to know in advance whether some nut has murder on his mind unless you sit him down with a psychiatrist. Even then there are no guarantees.
My condolences to the Mahon family. I've skied at Eldora and always found it to be a pleasant, well run operation.

Wrong. They were Jewish. Look into it.

There's been a lot of bashing of the Rocky on this thread for its reporting of this story, but I just re-read it and it seems pretty thorough and coherent now, considering it only happened yesterday.
A guy listening to a police scanner can report what he hears immediately, and I guess there's nothing wrong with that, but a newspaper is generally expected to clarify and verify the facts before reporting a story. And this is a weird story!

Honestly Sorry to hear so much damning things have gone on this morning. God, where do sick freaks like this arise? Seriousily? I fail to see how cowards like this rise out of the murk? Its just sick.
Seriousily just sick.
Thank God that deputy killed him head on rather than waste our time and tax money on explaining how he is 'mentally insane' and reading a year down the road he was released for good behavior and than a few months further that a child was found killed in his car.
Just sick. Burn in he** you SOB.

Neither the Columbine killers nor the New Life Church shooter were atheists, but rather hard-core occult satanists.
Interesting that the shooter was wearing all black. Wanna bet his cat was all black too?
