Do you agree with the Broncos' decision to fire coach Mike Shanahan?

Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler says of coach Mike Shanahan's firing: "We had zero inkling this was going to happen. I didn't have a clue." Cutler also is worried about the fate of quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who calls the plays on offense.

— Broncos owner Pat Bowlen stunned people across the NFL Tuesday by letting Mike Shanahan go.

And count a surprised, angered quarterback in Jay Cutler among them.

"I'm disappointed, I'm shocked, I'm not happy about it, I'm not pleased with it at all," Cutler said by phone Tuesday. "We had zero inkling this was going to happen. I didn't have a clue."

Cutler said he met with Shanahan for about 30 minutes Monday before leaving town to discuss offseason plans as well as the direction the offense would take in the 2009 season.

This year, Cutler was selected for his first Pro Bowl after he set single-season franchise records in passing yards (4,526), total offense (4,726 yards), attempts (616) and completions (384) to go with 25 touchdowns, which tied him for the third-highest single-season total in Broncos history.

Cutler compiled those totals despite the team's injury woes at running back. The Broncos placed seven running backs on injured reserve this season, five of whom had started at least one game.

It resulted in the lowest rushing total - 1,862 yards - in Shanahan's 14-year tenure as the team's coach. The previous low had been 1,864 yards in 1999, when the Broncos finished 6-10.

"I think, with the offensive staff we had, we were moving ahead," Cutler said. "I had just met with Mike to go over everything, talk about the things we wanted to do, make sure we were going the right way on offense."

Cutler was particularly interested to hear what the fate of current quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates would be. Bates just finished his first year as the team's play-caller on game day.

Bates also recently turned down an offer from Lane Kiffin to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee after Shanahan had extended Bates' contract for two more seasons, through 2011.

"And he had an option to go to Tennessee, and maybe that's still on the table for him," Cutler said. "But to lose all of our offensive coaches, too, that would be a big thing. Guys like Jeremy (Bates), (receivers coach Jedd) Fisch, that would be a step back for us, in my mind."

Already Tuesday, rumors were running rampant through the league the Broncos were going to seek a replacement with a background in offense to continue grooming Cutler.

The quarterback was the team's top draft pick in 2006, and Shanahan said last week he believed Cutler's season had been "incredible" and that the 25-year-old had the makeup "to win big games and be the kind of guy people in Denver are going to be happy to have for a long, long time."

"I hope it all works out," Cutler said. "But I know I'm disappointed, I'm not happy, and it's a lot to think about. I just want to continue the things we were able to do this year on offense and get better all the time."

Cutler is right! This was a bad move! You don't fire your "offensive minded" coach with the league's 2nd best offense. You work to find a solution on defense. This move will only ruin the next few years and who knows if the offense will ever be this good again. This is terrible timing. No, Shanahan did not do a good job drafting defensive players and the defense is terrible. But there is NO ONE out there right now that is better than Shanahan. He had so much influence with this team it will take the team years to recover. Will Cutler and the players we have this is terrible timing! Also look at the injuries this year! He was doing a good job with what he had. This is the worst decision Bowlen has ever made!!!

He was bad at defense. So work it out. Don't fire him. This will not help the Broncos. This will take years to recover from

I defended him for the past 8 years against my father in law who wants to fire him every year. But on Sunday I finally came to the realization that it is time to move on. We need new focus and new energy. Shanahan will go somewhere else and be a big success. I predict it and hope for it. But I feel that it is time for a new direction.

I agree that Shanahan should not of been let go, but the Broncos needed him to just be a coach not the GM as well. Bowlen has once again shown that the problem is with the ownership and not the coach. So, Pat, how are you going to get a 1st rate coach now that Shanahan is still on the books for $20 mil? Pat, you have effectively "blown" this team up. Thanks for the memories. I guess that Spano isn't the only owner with dementia.

mccaffreyfan, the problem is due to the fact that there was no one within the organization that could override his decisions on defense. Do you think he would willingly give up half of his titles (including GM), just to be the head coach? I don't think so.

Get a real (not puppet) GM. Get a defensive guru like Spagnuolo that will leave the offense alone. Get someone to light a fire under the boys on special teams.

It probably won't pay dividends right off the bat, but frankly, Shanahans influence on the defense produced nothing more than a 3 year descent to the basement of the NFL.

If the Fins can go from 1-15 to the top of their division, then there is hope for us. New blood may be just what we need.

Shanny had a chance to stay, but refused to fire/replace his defensive cord and Bowlen let Shanny go. Shanny tried to make a power play because he believed that Bowlen would allow him to coach forever. Obviously the defense was a big problem but not the only problem. Shanny had too much power within the org. people were scared to express their opinion if it differed from Shanny's. That is not a good thing for one guy to control every aspect of the org. Now Cutler needs to just shut the heck up and prepare to learn whatever system is instilled. No more babysitting the young brash guy who claims his arm is stronger than Elway's.

Ya know, I agree that Shanny probably should have had one more year b/c they have a young core and the offense is definitely headed towards great.

One more offseason to bring in the right free agents to fix the defense...

BUT... its hard to argue with the decision. The facts are there. 10 years of complete mediocrity. 4 playoff appearances in 10 years. 1 win and 4 blowouts. They lost a play-in game in '06 against the lowly 49ers. They lost 3 straight play-in games this year... 2 by blowout. They consistently jump out in front of teams by multiple scores and fade. They consistently start the season fast and fade down the stretch. Wasted drafts and draft picks. A defense that has been helpless to make stops in big games, year after year.

Look, I love Mike Shanahan. I still remember those championships just like everyone else. But its been 10 years of going nowhere. Even '05 was shaky. That win against NE was aided by the Pats implosion. 5 turnovers, a 99 yard pick and return and a questionable pass interference that handed us a TD.

The NFL is full of mediocre teams and we simply haven't been able to make any type of run.

Shanny could have gotten another year, but its tough to question the firing. I look at next year's schedule (nfc east, afc north, indy and the pats) and we're in trouble next year already. Bowlen might look at that and say, we can afford to transition in '09.

I also wonder if Bowlen approached Mike about giving up some of his control and bringing in a GM to handle all personnel decisions. I wonder if Shanny said "no thanks" and they agreed to part ways.

    We'll see what shakes out.

I agree with those that question how Atlanta, Miami, Carolina, Baltimore and others in recent years have been able to turn things around quickly, yet the Broncos haven't been able to get over the hump in a decade.

Very, very, very, poor decision. Shanahan is a hall of fame coach. He was rebuilding this team and that takes time. They are only 3 years removed from AFC Championship Game. Most the players on this team have 3 or less years experience and yet they showed lots of promise. The defense needs better players sure but the team does not need a new head coach. Most teams in the league right now would give up their coach for Shanahan, there will be teams that have good coaches that might fire that coach to bring in Shanahan, after all his resume is better than any coach right now except for Billicheck. For those who are looking for Cower to come in don't count on it. 1 he just turned down both the Jets and browns and told them I am not coaching again take me off your list. The coach that comes in will be from our current staff sine they also are all under contract, or a nobody because we don't have the money to pay Shanahan 7 million a year that we still owe him and also pay high profile coach at the same time. Because of Shanhans new mansion he will probably take a year off and just collect a check without the stress while he watches this team completely self destruct under a new and inexperienced coach. The all the star offensive players who have express their discuss with the decision will leave once their contracts are up which Cutler, Marshall, Sheftler, Dumervill, are all up at the end of 2009. Shanahan will then come back and go to KC and take 3 out of the 4 since we can not franchise all of them and KC will then walk all over us for years to come.

After all, what the heck has Coach Mike been doing for the past 10 years except rebuilding? Frankly, I don't buy the cover story that the falling out between Bowlen and Shanahan was over Slowik. I think Coach Mike was asked to resign from his GM position and refused. In any case, its not like Coach Mike was giving the Broncos his very best. Over the past several years he has been more involved in selling cars and pushing political agendas than coaching our team to a championship. That's my 2-cents worth and I'm standing by it.

As Bill Williamson from ESPN pointed out, I think a great fit would Josh McDaniels from the Pats. Their system is very similar to the Broncos and so Cutler and crew would have an easier time to learn it. Josh is what Shanny used to be in 95. Pioli would be the icing on the cake to get quality defensive guys. Cowher, Billick, Spagnuolo, etc are more defensive minded so that is not good for the development of Cutler unless Jeremy Bates remains, which is unlikely since Cowher wants to bring in his own team.

Final note. Bowlen is not Jerry Jones. He gave Shanny the keys to the Broncos and he failed. You guys seem to forget that the NFL is a business. Bowlen will not let the Broncos flounder like GM and Chrysler.

However, after the failure of Bobby Beathard and Alex Spanos to give up first round draft picks and have every single "Billy Joe" QB come play, I had enough. The NFL is a business. Let me repeat that, a business. Despite what every fan seem to think that where you live is where your loyalty lies, I disagree. I believe in Pat Bowlen. He built the Denver Broncos to what it is now and he will continue that tradition. Shanny had his time and there was no one else left to blame or fire except himself and I'm glad Pat Bowlen made the right decision. Friendship and loyalty lasted for 21 years. In the end, business is business.

Yea he may have made some bad decisions on personal on the defensive side of the ball, but offensively your gonna see this team take a major step backwards. And finally get of Cutlers back he is in his third yr and he is gonna be an all pro for yrs to come. you cant expect a third yr QB to carry the entire offense on his back like he had to this year. The lack of a running game due to injury was huge in the mistakes he made, and the defense was just plain horrible, also a big part in mistakes. I truely felt the defense was probably 3 or 4 players away from being a solid unit next yr and the offense was gonna be spectacular, now we get 2 more yrs of adjusting to a new system and the growing pains that will go with it. Thanks for the great job coaching mike and good luck on your next stop. Hey Shanny haters maybe we will get Romeo or Marty ...woooooo hoooooooooo.

Come on now guys! How soon we forget what we would be without Mike Shanahan. A franchise like the Bills or Vikings that are Charlie Brown loveable losers. A great QB in Elway who was just a choker and couldn't win the big game. Because of Shanahan we have two Super Bowl titles and an all-time great QB who went out on top with two rings. Everyone thinks Bill Belichick is the greatest coach ever. Does anyone remember him and all his accomplishments in Cleveland. You guys are such a bunch or whining pansies, with the memory of a three year old. "You have two Super Bowls and are the winningest coach IN DENVER HISTORY" but you lost last week. Whats's up with that. HUH HUH" I think that is evidently your mind sets. Thats not the true Denver fans I know. You all sound like Philadelphia fans. Why don't you all go cheer a motionless player on the ground or boo Santa Claus.
Now for some level headed thinking. Mike was the best coach we ever had. A great offense and consistenly one of the top running games every year. He was grooming the next Elway and is in control of one of the top young offenses in the league. But... Our Defense or lack thereof was atroucious, embarassing, bush league and completely unexceptable. Worse yet, we have been this bad for years or so. Does anyone remember what year Peyton Manning started his annual annihilation of our defense??? And Shanahan has continued to make excuses for it. Even after Sunday night's game when San Diego did what they wanted when they wanted to. I think they punted once after the game was over and they were trying to run the clock out. So if Pat Bowlen (who is a great owner by the way) decided we needed a change, then we should trust him. Say what you want about him but he honestly cares what Denver does on the field. Jeremy Bates will stay as the offensive coordinater, since he showed he can handle the offense, the play calling and Jay Cutler's progression. Then we will hire a GM for only personnel moves and finally add a defensive minded head coach.
Mike you are the best coach we ever had and we will never forget you. But I think it was best for all involved for a change.

Shanahan was maybe too trusting that the players wanted to win as badly as he did. Unfortunately the modern day athlete thinks his job is to just show up and collect a paycheck.

As a season ticket holder and a long, long time Bronco fan, I say - thank you Mr. Bowlen. Mike Shanahan has been an exceptional coach for this team. But his skills as a GM have not kept up, and that is where the line has to be drawn. If you can't pick the players - on both sides of the ball - that are going to give you the best chance to win, you can't stay in the game. The defensive deficiencies have just been too glaring for too many years. The ransacking of a bad Cleveland d-line, first- and second-round defensive draft picks that have gone bust, firing d-coordinators every year - these are all on Shanny.

It's tough to see the man who coached this team to 2 Super Bowls go. But at the end of the day, he had too much power - and people with power are not inclined to relinquish any. Mike wouldn't have taken a loss of control over personnel decisions, and unfortunately it is those decisions that were his ultimate demise in Denver. I wish him nothing but success as he moves on, and hope for the best in the Broncos search for a new coach. Regardless of what many commenters want to believe, Pat Bowlen is a great owner and this is the best job available in the league.

Shanahan is a brilliant offensive mind, but he's lost it when it comes to the defense. He has little or no ability to get the right players for this defense, the right coaches etc. Shanahan has too much pride to take any demotion in his role, so he must go. He wants to do it all, Coach, GM, etc. If he'd be willing to coach and focus on the offense and allow a GM to come in and make decisions regarding personnel, then I'd say don't let him go, but Shanahan wants it all, but has only proven that he's good at offense, but has no clue when it comes to defense...defense that has killed this team for years.

Have we had a dominant D-line in Denver since Shanahan has been coach? Shanahan keeps drafting players in the secondary, when the line is horrible. Bailey and Bly have become a wasted commodity because the D-line doesn't generate enough pressure to make them effective. Something had to change. I still regard Shanahan as being a fantastic coach, but he's a stubborn control freak, and it has finally caught up to him.

Cutler should learn how to take responsibility for his poor play which definitely did not help Shanahan's job security. For such an offensive genius coach, he should have spent some more time on not only finding qualified defense coaches but on Cutler's telegraphing interception throwing. Perfect example was the interception in the end zone in the San Diego drubbing!!! Cutler would take a snap and without looking off any of his receivers, would focus on (mostly Marshall) and just fire away. DB's and Safety's only had to follow Cutler's non-moving head and see where the ball was going. Sure, he put up the stats on yardage and touchtown passes but seriously what else was he going to do with no running game? How about the interception stat?!?!

PAT BOWLEN is the franchise, make no mistake.

I think Shanahan is an amazing coach. he has done more with less for a long time. Make no mistake. His legacy is in tact and he will go into the hall of fame as a Bronco. Regardles of where he ends up next year, and it will be very strange seeing someone else patrol the sidlenes at Invesco. But our owner decided it was a good decision for the team to move on, right?

    Time will tell.

We know this much, that offense we have in place is amazing, and a defensive head coach with a solid offensive cordinator, that is familiar with the current studs on our roster may be what we need to get to the top. Bill Cowher is a solid candidate, I think there may be something to all the hubub today about Cowher NOT taking the Jets job and Shanahan's firing we will see, expect a decison out of Dove Valley in who the next coach will be sometime soon...before this time next week.

Is it Bill Cowher, maybe, no mater what, as tough as it is for me to say it. Pat Bowlen made the best decision he could and Shannahan will coach a different team next year. Go Broncos!!!

I understand where Cutler is coming from, especially since hearing what former players TD and Mark Schlereth have said in their roles as professional TV commentators. Mike Shanahan has been one of the best head coaches in the league for many years, and it is truly sad to see him be fired by the team he built and loved.

If it came down to a decision by Bowlen to take away some of Shanahan's almost complete power, I can understand that to. However, for Shanahan's firing to come after a brief 5 minute conversation seems very odd to me. I kept on waking up all night just wondering what will happen next with the Broncos. Today is the sad 2nd anniversary of Darrent Williams' murder, and I remember clearly both the shock of losing to the 49ers and the tragic loss of DW. In many ways, this is even worse, as the Broncos truly are in limbo. Maybe it works out for the best as we all hope it does. Still, Mike Shanahan is not a coach or a presence who will be easy to replace.

Shanahan has been a great coach but a lousy GM. You don't suppose after 21 years that Bowlen offered to let him stay as head coach and Shanny declined do you? As one of the commentators on 1510 said yesterday, it was as if Shanahan started reading his press clippings.

I don't hold Shanahan entirely responsible for the season ending blow-up. Last year, the Broncos had more starters out for the season and more total injuries than in both Super Bowl seasons combined - and this year was worse. HOWEVER - at what point over the last 4 weeks (not to mention the entire season) was Shanahan responsible for going to the defensive coordinator and letting him know that his work was unacceptable? And who was the "leader" on the defense to light a fire under the players? It was a combination failure, but ultimately, the "buck stops" with the head coach - especially since there had been offensive and defensive coordinator shakeups over the past few years (didn't the Broncos have 3 defensive coordinators in the last 4 years?) - and if (as I suspect) Shanahan turned down a "demotion" to only being head coach, then he had to go.

What some think is lack of maturity on Jay's part is really his frustration, just like in the game Sunday when the coaches, including Shanny, were trying to tell Jay to run some glitter play before half-time, and Jay dismissed them with the wave of his hand and called his own play that worked - Elway had to be proud.

Jubei, pay no mind to "zoomy". He was spouting off stupid comments on another article. he knows squat about football talent. Same with MarcoPolo.

Jersey, sorry, still disagree. Bowlen doesn't have all the answers, nor does he expect a player to be a "Stepford Wife". Football is an emotional game, as well. Bonds get formed and opinions get voiced. Also, if you read the latest article in the RMN, Bowlen and Cutler sat down and talked and Jay was behaving himself and the conversation went well. My hope is that they keep Dennison and keep the offense clicking. The D and ST's need the work, not the O.

    BE GONE, TROLLS!!!!!

cutler is understandably shocked, as we real football fans are too. maybe it was time for a change, but how it was done was not something many of us foresaw, only the hater trolls out there.

cut the guy some slack. he KNOWS what he had, and now has some real uncertainty in his immediate future. i'd be pissed too.

Incognitoboy, agreed. But hillbillysloth, Windork, gloomy(zoomy), Webdisaster, and others we know (Or don't know. Who is Webmaster and zoomy? Never came on before? Trolls) are the negative force on the Broncos blogs. They carry that smug, obnoxious attitude with them everywhere. Probably get in a lot of fights that way, talking negative constantly. People don't like negative bashers. When they say Cutler is a bad QB, they are showing their ignorance and their childish, arrogant personality. These guys get on the blog to stir up trouble, as is typical from trolls. They are a dime a dozen. If they were students in my martial arts class, with an attitude as negative as theirs, they would be finding another class, rather than trying to bring my class down with their dribble. Pay them no more mind, Incognitoboy. Lets just focus on the future of the Broncos and not the trolls. They are what they are. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are all of these new posters coming from? I like how you are keeping them informed of Facts and history bud! But you will be up the next week until the wee hours. Let them rant and rave until they leave and a Good exchange of information among us Bronco Nation fans can continue. I for one do not know what to think! Its like I do not know all the facts yet. I do know one thing we will not be average for 2-3 years because of this.

See, FTR? Chargertom is just what I spoke of. A troll who never had the cajones to write in and talk smack BEFORE the game. No, he had to wait till it was decided in fear of making himself look bad. To late, Chargertom. We see your true side. You're a "bandwagon Chargers fan". You are a disgrace to the real Chargers fans. Oh, and your boys, they will be "1 and done" and Cutler is STILL going to play in the Pro Bowl. You know, that game where the "BEST", play? The one that Rivers won't see unless Brett drops out? Nice try, bandwagoning troll.

FTR, with my mom ill and in the hospital and me, taking care of my father, I'll be home a lot. Can't even go out for New Years but I have my gal pal coming over to spend New Years with me and we'll pop some champagne and make a night of it. Happy New Year to you and the rest of the Broncos fans who I've talked with over the year. It was a hell of a run and I will continue to post and keep my fingers crossed that Bowlen makes some wise decisions in the next few weeks. We'll see.

Nothing like that free speech as practiced by The Peoples Republic Of Denver.
Bandwaggoner...hardly...Chargerfan since my first game at age 8 in 1963.
As for the Pro Bowl and the 'Best'...I'd assume the 'best' are still playing...lol.
Gee...I wonder what pays more; a trip to Hawaii or that 1) extra game check... 2) that huge chunk of NBC revenue...3) the activation of all those incentive clauses by making the playoffs?
Enjoy your three years of rebuilding with your crybaby, under .500 as a starter QB....he's proven he can win at every level except college and pro.
Enjoy watching Phillip Rivers in the playoffs.

Getting banned is something to be proud of, right buddy? I highly doubt that you got kicked due to your acute insight and razor-sharp wit. No, from what I saw on the DP boards, your MO was to puke out some weak smack talk, and then repeat often.

Unfortunately, these boards don't have provisions for ignoring certain posters. I'll just have to treat your 3rd grade level musings as noise.

You're the internet equivalent of a gnat, fella, and will be treated as such.

    Super Bowls wins... Remember those...

Oh yeah, you wouldn't, would you?

Jubei, took the words right out of my mouth.

Chargertom, you brag about being kicked off a site 3 times? Why brag? Be ashamed. It speaks volumes for your personality. Being banned requires certain requirements...
    1.) Being foul-mouthed.
    2.) Being threatening.
    3.) Making racist comments.
4.) Being "all of the above".
Something tells me you were #4. Time to grow up. Nobody likes trolls who come in and get foul. You haven't done it yet, here, but from what you explained to us about the Denver Post, that's your forte. On the street, that kind of behaviour will get you into trouble. Time to clean up the act, Chargertom. We have fans of other teams come on and we can talk. Then there are the "fans" (I still use that term loosely when it comes to you, because of your attitude), who were never seen before and hopefully never seen again, because they come on only to "bash and run". They're called "trolls", Chargertom. Speak football, not foulball.
