Witness: Gay man arrested at concert was 'acting obnoxiously'

Pop star Madonna performs during her first-ever performance in Denver on Nov. 11 during her "Sticky & Sweet Tour" at the Pepsi Center.
Jerome Schroeder claimed he was arrested at a Madonna concert last month because he is gay.
He lodged a complaint against police and told his story to the media.
But now investigators say there was more to Schroeder's arrest than he let on.
A witness has come forward to say Schroeder and his companion were "acting obnoxiously" during the Nov. 12 concert at the Pepsi Center.
And Denver's Independent Monitor, Richard Rosenthal, said Thursday he will take "no further action" on Schroeder's complaint.
"I am sorry we could not be of service," Rosenthal wrote in a letter to Schroeder.
Schroeder had requested mediation with the officers involved in his arrest. But Rosenthal said the Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau no longer supports that.
"The IAB command staff was concerned that your lack of credibility with respect to your description of your own conduct made you an inappropriate candidate to mediate your concerns with the involved officers," Rosenthal's letter says.
Specifically, the witness, who came forward after reading newspaper articles about Schroeder's arrest, told investigators Schroeder was "throwing ice, hitting random people and howling with laughter," the letter says.
Schroeder, a Denver radiologist, did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.
Rosenthal described the witness as an "independent, unbiased and otherwise credible" woman who sat a couple seats away from Schroeder and saw everything.
Schroeder had claimed that a man seated in front of him made slurs about his sexuality and that a woman then made up an allegation that he had shoved her.
When Denver police asked Schroeder to leave the concert, he refused and was arrested for trespassing.
Afterward, Schroeder claimed Denver police had an "anti-gay attitude" and weren't properly trained to handle situations fueled by sexual bias.
But the witness disputed that, saying Schroeder and his friends were "out of control" and behaved "like overgrown children who were completely self-absorbed and oblivious to how their behavior affected the people around them," Rosenthal wrote in his letter.
"She described you as yelling loudly at the person in front of you and apparently enjoying the attention that you were getting from your group with the comments you were yelling," the letter says.
The police officers involved also described Schroeder as "obnoxious" and "rude." One officer said Schroeder yelled at him and accused him of "gay bashing" without cause.
The monitor's office does not usually investigate the validity of a complaint before making a referral to mediation. But after the witness came forward, the case was closed.
There are no appeals, unless new or different information becomes available.
"The information we've currently received seems pretty compelling," Rosenthal said.

And now we have the rest of the story. Jerome, sorry pal, the card you played appears counterfeit. But if you harp loud enough, get some people to come on board, maybe you can still get a buck or two out of the Pepsi Center. See, when I go there to see concerts, (hate those damn little seats, as at 6'6", 310 lbs. they are miserable), the security don't care who you are, if you are acting a fool to the detriment of others, they toss you out. Giving them the ultimatum as you did Jerome, saying "arrest me", they will! I've seen people tossed from Metallica, AC/DC, straight or not, the security are equal opportunity throwing those who disrupt out. If they were throwing out gays at a Madonna concert, they don't have enough security to carry that off. But play the card anyway, maybe there some money in it for you! It's nice that someone totally unassociated came forward so the truth be known. Sorry Jerome...next!

There should be a rule that you should have at least a high school education to register for this forum. I find it intolerable that there are so many people out there, who have failed to take reasonable steps to educate themselves. It is these people that make America weak.

If you don't get it, then you obviously are part of the problem. I find it obnoxious when people have the music in their cars so loud that I can hear it in my house (my windows vibrate) when they are a half-block away. Hell, I work on the 9th floor of an office building downtown and I can hear people's cars. Believe it or not they have city ordinances against such noise levels. However, when you speak out about it, you are made to look like you are abnormal. As though being obnoxious to the point of disrupting others peace and quiet is merely the other person uniqueness. I want to say the word multiculturism, but that would distract from the point of this conversation (or would it?).
It's good that there are limits and that people are willing to speak up when someone passes a normative threshold. It's not intolerance, it's just called good manners, respect.
The last time I was at a hockey game with my son, there was a group of people about three rows back who, from the beginning of the game, when the Canadian National Anthem was being played, began yelling out obscenities, first about Canada, then generally about the game. It became obnoxious and a real distraction to enjoying the talent on the ice and experience of being in a first rate sports facility with my son.
Soon, security came and ask the group to leave. Not surprisingly, they didn't have tickets for the section they were in.
Obnoxiousness is a crime and it should be rubbed out in an equally crude way.

Then you have to turn the other cheek. Fighting, whether fighting back or striking first will never win you as much support as if you are an innocent victim.

Jimmy,
Exactly, for one reason or another they assume a single choice in life defines your existance. Sexual, religious, hobbies, or even just owning a dog. I'm only 27 years of age but I've learned a great deal from that short period. Mostly from trial and error which is the best and most effective way to learn. You only really learn when you fail.
I don't hunt as I disagree with it myself however I respect its out there and I only ask that the laws and regulations that fit that particular nich be followed. I am very strongly animal rights, particularily companion animals (cats, dogs, horses, etc.) and refuse to accept cruelty toward them. I do not understand what kind of coward would beat a dog? It's a skip away from a child, and than a woman.
It's difficult to define happiness when you're making a collective decision that effects so many people. So in that way I think the people who tell you that are either arrogant or ignorant. I only say that you be humane, kind, and not cruel toward others. That being said you can get your fancy off on a tree stump as long as it aint hurting anyone.
I'm happy you found what you were looking for in life (or that he found you). I am still a loooong ways off from that. But I'm content with my job, my home, my dog, family and friends. It's all I can ask for at the time.
You sound like a solid kind of guy already, and I like that.

The funny part is, if he got the letter stating they found him not credible, and he was telling the truth, don't you think he would have responded to defend himself? Maybe he will and I'll be wrong but this is probably the end of it all.

"Heterosexuals are straight!" (Or, to some, disgusting)
Is that just as much bigotry? Gay activists self labeled themselves gay by accepting the term to define their sexual choice of life and a collective title as a 'minority' group. Its hard to fight self imposed labeling. Frankly, I prefer homosexual over just gay. Its more definitive, factually speaking.
Just thought it would be cute to turn that around.

Davies,
Penetration means merely penetrating or breaking the upper layers of skin tissue rather than oral, anal, or virginal penetration (examples of openings) I'd imagine? The skin's a fantastic tool for keeping unwanted Bacteria and porious virus out but its not flawless at its job. It does perform the function well so long as some obnoxious little sh*t does not do his upmost to puncture it. Such as with Ice as an example. Bacteria can invade any open (or unopen in some cases) wound.

it started with a hate slur...at which point this guy reacted by throwing ice cubes and making a fool of himself.
as i said before...the guy throwing the hate slur is lucky he picked on someone who only threw ice.
i have some black friends that wouldn't have taken that type of slur nearly as well as he did.
he got lucky. next time it might not be as painless for the guy who started the confrontation by throwing around hate speech.

jay, I told myself that never again would I bother with you. But come on. The entire context of the article is that the complainant's statements have been discredited, yet you dwell on the fact that he claimed that it started with a hate slur. This claim was made after he was arrested and therefore quite likely disgruntled. Meanwhile we have an independent uninvolved eyewitness that says he was throwing ice cubes at random people and howling with laughter.
Reading comprehension indeed!

Jay,
Again, that 'hate slur' is not coming from a third party not directly involved (the witness*) but from the 'victom' who has already been roundly discredited by the article, the witness, and both commision's reviewing it. The only one here still defending the guy is you. Why? If you feel obligated to help defend the guy round up some cash (out of your pocket*) and help him build a legal suit.
I mean....Come on! He isn't even willing to defend himself here now. That only shows silent, arrogant acknowledgement of his own guilt.

Unless you were standing next to the guy when the "gay" slur was thrown, you can't actually sit there and say that it happened. If you were, I'm sure it would have been stated. The "witness" who reportedly "witnessed' everything gave an account of what happened and nothing was mentioned about a slur being tossed out there and then the ice getting thrown and obnoxious behavior as retaliation. And I still wonder what Shroeder all of a sudden wasn't available to the media to defend himself when he was tagged a liar.

The only one that has you sentenced to death currently based on honor thats still forcefull (fatally) inforced is Islamic tradition that requires a women to only one man....but a man may have four wives and as many sex slaves as he can capture. The Qur'an even goes to lengths to explain how worthless sex slaves are by allowing you to execute punishment in any and all ways. At least a married women based in the Qur'an is worth a bit under one fourth the value of a man. "Allah made One (men) to excel (superior) the other (women)"

Many thanks to the witness who came forward with the truth. I know this guy and this is typical behavior for him. He's an angry person with a huge chip on his shoulder. He behaves like a idiot, has no insight into his behavior, accepts no accountability for his behavior, and then plays the victim. It is always everyone else who is to blame, never his own behavior. The sad thing is that this sideshow detracts from the very real and very serious discrimination that many gay men experience all the time. Time for him to wake up and go get some therapy.
