Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler can't get away from Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis in the fourth quarter Sunday. Cutler was sacked three times as the Broncos failed to clinch the AFC West.

Call it a swing and a miss.

With a chance to seal their playoff fate Sunday, the Broncos got a glimpse of the kind of team they'll see if they do push their way into January. But having entered the day three games up in the AFC West with three to play, they left North Carolina with little more than disappointment in the cargo hold.

"We have some work to do with two games left . . . ," defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban said. "We have to learn to finish. We can't make mistakes . . . and we made too many mistakes to get it done this time."

Carolina, 11-3 and in the hunt for home-field advantage in the NFC, forced Broncos mistakes, then took advantage of those Broncos mistakes for a 30-10 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

It leaves the Broncos with two games remaining to grab a playoff spot in a year when, despite all the things they have had happen to them, they have led the division wire to wire.

But they still aren't in, and they still could be just a bit outside.

"That's it," Ekuban said. "We know what we have to do."

They came within an eyelash, or at least came within Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe hanging on to an onside kick, of clinching the division title before they took the field Sunday.

But the Chargers (6-8) overcame an 18-point Chiefs lead at Arrowhead Stadium, scored what became the winning touchdown with 36 seconds left in the game and saw Kansas City miss a 50-yard field-goal attempt on the last play. Connor Barth had been 9-for-9 this season before the kick.

It's all relevant to the Broncos, because the Chargers, while still two games behind, have a better record in the division - 4-1, compared with the Broncos' 3-2 - and a better record in AFC games - 6-5, compared with the Broncos' 5-5.

It's all relevant, because those also happen to be the tiebreakers that will be on the scorecard when the Chargers and Broncos play in San Diego in the regular-season finale.

It's all relevant, because the Broncos still need one more win because the Panthers showed them what late-season football is all about.

"We always say we want to play our best football in December . . . ," linebacker Jamie Winborn said. "But we had our hands full (Sunday). As you saw, we just played a great team, and we didn't do what we needed to do to win."

The Broncos needed to run the ball when the game still was on the line. They didn't, putting up only 63 yards on the ground before stuffing the totals with 58 more on their last possession of the game.

The Broncos needed to keep the Panthers from pounding away at their injury-filled defense. They didn't, as the Panthers finished with 147 yards rushing that included a 56-yard touchdown run from DeAngelo Williams.

And the Broncos, facing a game at home Sunday with the season on the line and where they have wrestled with far more trouble than they have on the road this season, needed to have a little more of their away-game mojo.

They didn't get that, either.

"But win the next game, we're in," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "Pretty simple."

Simple, yes. So much so that when coach Mike Shanahan gathered the team around him immediately after the loss, he told the players if they beat Buffalo on Sunday, they will get what they want.

True enough, but they are running out of time to get what they need.

Think fast

The Broncos tried to surprise the Panthers offense and offered a new personnel grouping right out of the gate.

Looking to slow the Panthers' powerful run game, the Broncos started their first defensive possession with four linemen and four linebackers in the formation.

With D.J. Williams back after missing five games because of a knee injury, the Broncos took linebacker Wesley Woodyard, at about 230 pounds, and lined him up at strong safety.

Woodyard had been starting in Williams' weak-side linebacker spot, away from the tight end.

"Obviously, a good tackler," Shanahan said. "Great speed, probably faster than most strong safeties in the league."

But the Panthers reacted quickly, throwing on five of their first six plays out of a no-huddle to keep the Broncos from substituting - all against the Broncos' new look.

Jake Delhomme completed four of the passes for 73 yards, including three to Steve Smith for 66 yards and a touchdown.

"It was designed to stop the run . . . ," Woodyard said. "I think I can play strong safety with a little technique work . . . but they caught us. When we get in that no-huddle situation, we just have to continue to play ball."

The Broncos only used the formation on two other snaps, on back-to-back plays in the second quarter, on a 5-yard run and a 3-yard loss by Williams.

Woodyard started his career at Kentucky as a safety and played as a linebacker for the school at 215 to 218 pounds. Shanahan said Woodyard likely will make some more appearances at the position during the final two weeks of the regular season.

Three-point play

Sometimes points surrendered just before halftime in a reasonably close game leave the biggest mark.

And despite a Cutler interception in the first quarter, the Broncos had cobbled together a good enough effort in the first half to be trailing only 17-10 when they took over on their 18-yard line with 34 seconds left before halftime.

Cutler completed a pass to tight end Daniel Graham on first down for no gain, making it second-and-10 with 17 seconds left.

The Broncos called timeout, presumably to get themselves organized to try to drive for some points. But then, out of a three- receiver set, they tried Selvin Young on a running play on second down, hoping to catch the Panthers looking pass.

"I've done it before, all of a sudden, you get 40, 50 yards with a couple timeouts left, (you) call a timeout, get a couple slant routes and you're going for the field goal," Shanahan said. "We thought we'd get outside, and we did. Unfortunately, we didn't hold on to the ball."

Young did get 7 yards, but he also fumbled. The Panthers' Tyler Brayton, a former University of Colorado defensive lineman, recovered at the Broncos 25.

Delhomme took a knee on first down, then John Kasay kicked a 44-yard field goal to end the first half, giving the Panthers a 20-10 lead.

The Broncos never threatened after that, and they again are searching for one of their backs - Young, P.J. Pope, Tatum Bell or Cory Boyd, who was inactive - to give them enough to keep getting the ball.

"(We're) obviously disappointed with our turnover . . . ," Shanahan said. "We've got some guys who are going to get some carries here in the next couple weeks."

Numbers game

1team with a winning record that has been outscored this season - the Broncos, who have been outscored by 40 points in 14 games (366-326).

Ground control

DeAngelo Williams' 56-yard touchdown run was the ninth run of at least 30 yards that the Broncos defense has surrendered this season and the third touchdown run of at least 46 yards.

The truth is this loss means absolutely nothing. What means something is the way the Broncs respond to it. I believe it is the last remaining question I have concerning the Broncs and Cutler in particular. Calm down dynamicDave I'm not goin all negative and if you think about it you'll understand what I'm saying. The Broncos only needed to beat the 49ers to make the playoffs in Jay's first year. The moment looked too big for him really. Today I saw again a troubling pattern with Jay when he dropped his head in such a way that I knew he had given up, and I don't like that. I love the kids spirit most of the time and I think he has a whole heck of a lot of talent, but the truth is he has done more losing than winning even going back to college and at some point he has to snap that pattern. I think next week is important for Jay. He has a chance to come up big at home and put the Broncos in the playoffs. I hope San Diego wins and Jay proves his worth and breaks through that losing pattern and puts up a winning season for the first time since high-school. I might be reading too much into it, but the truth is a great competitor is not always a winner. I think Jay is, but it's time to prove it. Get to the playoffs, get some experience and next year is as bright as can be. Other than that, the game was dreadful. Woodyard was not good in his new spot and the defensive formations were awful, but the defensive played inspired and hard. Bly proved again how awful he at tackling and his lack of physicallity on the field borders on embarassing. Barret made a huge miss read on the Williams touchdown, but other than that he played decent. DJ looked good. Marshall needs to stop running backwards. Overall coaching adjustments were poor. Key point for me in the game was the second drive inside Carolina's 30 Broncs have 3rd and 1 and they go empty backfield? That play was huge. They had momentum and were moving the ball well. It was even a short yard. Cutler is a big guy. If you go empty run the QB draw, but why not go full and get the yard or throw out of that formation. Why be one dimensional with one yard to gain? Honestly if the Broncos score 7 on that drive it would have been a different game. It took the wind out of the offense. All I care about now is beating Buffalo. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

Great accomplishment Panthersfan...you beat every team in the worst division in the league! You won't get far...Your quarterback has the worst decision making of any going into the playoffs. You guys beat us but he left a ridiculous amount of plays on the field by over/under throwing his recievers. Whoever you play is going to take you out.

Broncos fans are just glad to be in the playoffs again. We know we're going to win the title in the worst division of the NFL this year. We're okay with that....we have a 4th string running back who we just signed from selling cell phones in the mall, and a defensive starting lineup that has a swinging door and WE STILL are gonna win a division. Brag when there's something to brag about Panthersfan...We're still pretty proud out here...

Ok after that game, I'm not so sure about drafting defense on the first day. Knowshon Moreno could be available and would help. I think Torain is a good RB and could be a great runner, I just don't trust him to stay healthy. I shouldn't be looking all the way to the draft yet, but Cutler needs some help because as of right now, he still isn't a winner. He is a good talented QB, but he isn't a winner. A good run game can help make Jay a winner.

Panthersfan, congrats, the afc west stinks this year. The amazing part is that denver is 3-1 against the historically powerhouse nfc south.

I really don't like what Shanny is saying about the sequence at the end of the half. There were 17 seconds left. He says you run 40 yards then throw a couple slants and kick a fg. No Mike, if he runs 40 yards, the clock is down inside of 5 seconds. He can't even accept criticism on a clear mistake.

Just say, "its on me, we shouldn't have called the timeout."

I'm not panicking yet. That game was kinda typical to this team. When it looks like the game is getting away from them, they pretty much pack it in and get blown out. So they look like they are dead in the water.

I think they will come back and play better this week. That's been the pattern. They better.

Bigg_Nuggets, I think you make a lot of sense. Its not jumping off the bandwagon or dumping on the team. Its what you see, and I see some of the same things. Jay visibly gets down and the team seems to follow suit. And they go big time. Poor execution, penalties, turnovers, weird play calls (3rd and 1 was awful), bad timeouts, missed FGs.

Jay obviously has immense talent, but he has to show he can get over that hump. This .500 thing is real until he gets passed it. We'll see how it plays out and go from there.

Its been an up and down season, but this Buffalo game is a crucial game. Win and get in. If Jay and co. play well and win a clean game, it will go a long way towards quieting critics. At least for another week :)

This team is rebuilding, this team has suffered a ton of injuries to key players... it would be a great experience for this team to win this week and put themselves into the playoffs.

How did we see the game from 4-Mile Bar, humm
Again turnovers, interception then the fumble.
First half, two breakdowns covering Steve Smith. No running game and Cutler tried to do too much. Short-hopping most throws.
Second half, 56 yard TD (Barrett miss read), and three 3 and out's.
The above is how they play in bad loses.
Buffalo was the game to focus on since the loss to Oakland, so lets get positive because the players played hard IMO.
My fear is that Phillip Rivers nudged ahead of Jay for Pro-Bowl, with his super comeback in the last 2 minutes. ouch
And yes I agree with the blog about Cutler needs to play better when the team is not.

that look got destroyed... this isn't high school football

look, i want woodyard on the field too. he's a play maker and a difference maker... but he is not a safety. he's just a rookie. do we not think its overwhelming enough to play his own position?

He kept trying to run the edge when he had openings and just simply missed them. D played poorly. Barrett messed up. Bly and Bell were blowing their coverages as if they were confused (they were)? Webster is still missing his gaps. We need Champ back and we need him this week. They need to put Pinnock in there. He's a FB and we need that "muscle". Hillis proved that. Try Boyd, also, with Pinnock.

Did anyone else notice that this blogger, named "Panthersfan" Is an unknown to the blog? No courage to brag about his team before the game. So sad.

Oh well, here's to next week and getting some payback. Take it out on Buffalo!!!!! I want Denver to earn their playoff berth, not back in. Whether they're "1 and done" or not is irrelevant. What's important is that they get there and let the youngest team in the NFL (and most banged up) get some playoff experience. They were picked to be 3rd in their division and they surprised a lot of people.

I also think that Shanahan is doing one of his best jobs coaching this season. I too have been a Bronco fan since the days of Frank Tripuka and Cookie Gilchrist. I watched Lou Saban trade away Willie Brown and Hewritt Dixon to the hated Raiders and ship Curly Culp out because he wasn't offensive line material. Saban was right about that as all Culp did was go on to become an all-pro DEFENSIVE lineman for Houston and Kansas City. Oh yeah and the half-a-loaf game. This current team as a very bright future with a great head coach and I for one am looking forward to watching it all unfold.

Its time to call it a "BAD" season and start the real re-building. The fish stinks from the head down.
I for one think there may some potential in this team with the right guidence. Get rid of the over priced defensive backs, and get ones that want to play and show that the proof is in the pudding not the talk. Build healthier offensive backs, maybe the trainer is not that up on new treatment/prevention of injuries. Cutler is good, it could be sugar management and I mean that sincerely. It could be messing with his head when he is on the field.

I agree with a lot of the above, Cutler does seem at times to go through some sort of attitude swing, I see it in the big loses, but I think that instead of giving up, pouting, he gets the "bit" in his teeth and plays with a stubborn determination, which turns into a problem, he starts forcing things. At times he is excellent at reading the field and finding the open guy, but when in that mode, he locks on and misses opportunities (read open guys) and things start going down hill. Any thoughts?

It's time for a complete overhaul of the Broncos on both sides of the football as well as special teams.

    Problems:

    1. Gone are the days when the Broncos Offensive line could block and open one hole through which a running back could cut and run for 10 yards of thereabout.

    2. Gone are the days then the Broncos Offense could throw to any receiver that we had, and have a very good chance of having the individual nearest the football catch the thing and run with it for a few yards afterwards too.

    3. Gone are the days when we have a swarming defense with people as good as Steve Atwater getting ready to lower the boom on whoever got that football.

    4. Gone are the days of winning by 20 points.

    5. Gone is almost everything Mike Shanahan helped put together on his way to building a team that could actually win repeat Super Bowls.

    6. Gone are the days when the West Coast Offense was considered something new. Notice that not even San Francisco is any good any longer? Sure there are other issues, but the facts are that the Broncos have not been real winners in quite some time.

Of course I root for them, but I do not ever expect them to win necessarily, and indeed I expect them to either fumble or throw an interception just as often. Finally, we had a great football team once with some of the very best players playing together.

Until we return to this formulation we will not become a winning franchise ever again.

No, I'm not at all upset over the loss to Carolina. Even the Media was telling them not to overlook us. Well, as everyone saw, they certainly did not do that, and they have a good chance of defeating the NYGs next week.

Let's rebuild our football team on both sides of the football so that one side does not mature before the other gets too old to keep up with all of the changes that we must make here.

Go Broncos, and please rebuild soon. Winning is a lot more fun for everyone than losing is. Besides, who wants to keep on having to listen to poor players tell us typical stories about why we did not prevail? They just go into that "Duh!" mode and state something that is grossly obvious to everyone who bothered to watch that game.

What we saw on Sunday is what we would, no make that-will see in the playoffs. A good measuring stick of where we are and where we need to be. It was a great learning experience for these young players. Let's not forget this is one of the youngest teams in the league, we have one of the largest amount of players on IR and still are in the hunt for the playoffs. Last year we had one of the oldest teams in the league and couldn't even sniff the playoffs. Another thing, let the deadheads who post here go back and continue to lick their butts, pat them on the head and they will just jump back in your lap and get fur all over your clothes!!

This game was flashbacks to 2000 and Coach Shanahan over thinking and out smarting himself. I'm in no way getting on him because this game does not mean anything. But the bottom line is the Broncos have done a hell of a job this year with the team we have. But they have to pick a RB and go with it... Selvin Young is a waste, he's been hurt all year and running him inside your own 20 with 34 seconds is rediculous. You could see the fumble coming. T Bell has put up decent numbers and PJ looked good. Make one of them the #1 and the other #2 and go with it... we have to have some kind of running attempt because NO QB in the NFL can win without some running attempt. We WILL win this Sunday and clinch our playoff spot and get a home playoff game... and you couldn't ask for ANYTHING more than that... no worries.

The truth must be told; the Bronco's are what they are.******
The Shanasham must be sent to the back of the bus, and Solvic allowed to build a real NFL Defence.
The Panthersfan rules this day, and runs over his victim, then backs up and runs over him again.

I was correct, Windork is a 13 year old that gets his kicks by trying to act intelligent. He watched V on TV once and thinks he has a witty tongue? I think not. Have you ever thought Windork, that nobody who is a Broncos fan, likes you. I communicate with some of them, offline (in person) and through emails and we all concur. You're a jerk. You are probably friendless because it's hard to like an obnoxious moron. Your twin sister, Panthersfan is a Carolina "bandwagon fan", and his lack of intelligence astounds even the most faithful bloggers. So tell me, Windork, did you do as I suggested and fight her back, in school, to protect your lunch money. Get your time in on the blog before your parents send you off to do your homework.

I just wanted spotdidn'tcheckouthisfacts to know that San Francisco hasn't been running the West Coast offense for quite some time now and that Denver never ran a trully West Coast offense either. I just thought that before he gave anymore wise ponts he should know the facts with which to write. Secondly, rebuild? Are we not one of the youngest teams with more rookie of the week awards than any other team this year? You want to rebuild with high-schoolers? This team is fun now, give them a chance to grow up before you start tearing it down. Finally, I was wondering why Windork capitalized "diarrhea". Is it sacred to you? Mostly I think it made your post stink, but then again I don't hold fecal matter in such high regard.

Dynamicdave: Kudos for wanting your boys to beat Buffalo and EARN their way in rather than some of your fellow fans wanting them to get in even if it means relying on help. That always has been a pet peeve of mine when it comes to any team needing help. The last time I checked every team plays the same number of games being 16, 8 at home and 8 on the road. Take care of your own business! I don't care who you are. If you have to BACK in you don't BELONG in and your chances of doing anything if you GET in are slim and none with slim having just left the building! You did see where I called my boy's game correctly. We now stand 1-1. Glad to see it seeing how tough it is to beat any team 3 times during a season and chances are we will lock horns again during the playoffs.

    Bottom Line......

We will take care of the Bills and contain M Lynch to get in. Hopefully by then we will have Champ back for (more than likely) Indy at Mile High. GO BRONCS!!!!!!!
