* Matt Dawes, Steamboat Springs
It was an eventful three games for Dawes and the Sailors in the Mountain Hockey tournament at Howelsen Ice Arena last weekend.
In wins against then-fourth-ranked Aspen, Battle Mountain and Summit, the junior goalie faced 107 shots. He made 101 saves, which included a 51-save performance in a 3-2 overtime victory against Aspen in the tournament opener. He posted a 4-0 shutout against Battle Mountain, needing only 19 saves, and he made 31 stops against Summit in the championship game.
* Amanda Hughes, Gateway
Hughes, who averaged 19.5 points a game last season for the Olympians, got her senior season off to a great start. Her 29.7 average is among the best in Class 5A after the first week of play.
Hughes scored 30 points to help Gateway to a 68-19 victory against Hinkley and she had 34 points in the Olympians' 77-24 win against Aurora Central. She capped her start by scoring 25 in a 67-42 victory against Rangeview.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Fairview boys basketball team, coached by Frank Lee, gave a strong indication it is going to be in the thick of the Class 5A title chase.
Fairview, ranked No. 2, beat defending state champion Denver East 61-54 to win the ThunderRidge Tip-off Classic.
The Knights beat Grandview (80-47) in the opener, then beat No. 7 and host ThunderRidge (71-44) in the tournament semifinals.
Depth was evident for the Knights as one of the team's top players, 6-foot-7 Jonathan Morse, sat out because of foul trouble and scored only seven points against Denver East. Team leader Travis Shepherd, who had a game-best 29 points against ThunderRidge, scored 18 against Denver East.
The Knights are playing host to the Fairview Festival this week.
