Mercury Cos., the Denver- based closely held operator of mortgage companies that once had almost 250 offices in six states, sought bankruptcy court protection from creditors, blaming the collapse of the U.S. housing market.
Mercury, a holding company, estimated it has assets and debt of as much as $100 million each on a Chapter 11 petition filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver. The company's Web site said it had more than 2,500 workers.
