GLENDALE, Ariz. Broncos fans should be prepared to see plenty of Darrell Hackney at quarterback tonight in the team’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals in University of Phoenix Stadium.
No starter is expected to play for the Broncos so that means quarterback Jay Cutler will get the night off. But Cutler’s backup Patrick Ramsey, who took a hard shot in last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers, has been sore through the week and also is not expected to play tonight unless needed.
That means Hackney, who spent half of last season on the Broncos practice squad, could go the whole way behind center. The Broncos have carried just three quarterbacks through this training camp.
Hackney, who was waived by the Cleveland Browns after training camp in 2006 and spent that season out of the league, was on the Broncos practice squad after last year’s training camp before being signed to the active roster on Nov. 10.
He was a gameday inactive for the Broncos’ final eight games of the season.
Ramsey took a big hit on his right upper arm and elbow last week — he was sporting some scrapes and bruises on the arm after the game — and was unable to grip the ball very well after the hit.
He threw some this week, but told coaches before the team left for Arizona, that he continued to be sore.
Hackney is 7-of-12 passing in this preseason for 77 yards. He has not thrown a touchdown pass or interception.

This is crunch time for Hackney. I have a feeling taht if Hackney performs well, Ramsey is on the bubble. If he is average at best, Hackney is on the bubble. If he struggles, he is gone.
3 qbs, 2 qbs will be left. One has to go. And it is not Cutler.

If like to see him do well and that to be true, aragornzxl. Signing ramsey was a bad idea, especially for the amount he got.

Ramsey won't get cut unless Shanahan is that comfortable with a backup who has no experience starting, filling in for Cutler. Could be interesting if they carried three QBs, and then cut one after the first reg. season game.
