Former Denver Broncos starter Billy Jenkins was named the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident early Thursday in Aurora, CBS4 News investigative reporter Brian Maass has learned.
Jenkins was a starting defensive back for the Broncos in 2000 and 2001 after he was acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Rams, where he played on the Rams' Super Bowl winning team in 1999.
Early Thursday morning, authorities say, Jenkins, 34, was driving a rental car when he hit Tracy Gill, 51, near the intersection of Parker Road and East Quincy Avenue.
Gill was riding a scooter and died a short time later.
Police say Jenkins ran away into Cherry Creek State Park after the accident but returned to the scene and was arrested.
Jenkins is being charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run, driving under the influence and careless driving.
He was released from jail after posting $50,000 bond.
A message left at his Arapahoe County home was not returned.
In addition to starting for the Broncos and Rams, Jenkins played for the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers.
He left professional football after playing for the Bills in 2002.
