As close as they could get

It wasn't within sight of Sen. Barack Obama, but it was as close as one California family could get Thursday.

Sitting at a bar on Federal Boulevard, Jimmy and Gina Ellis looked out at the stadium where their candidate would soon give his historic presidential-nomination speech.

"We're getting a sniff of history," said Jimmy Ellis, a labor organizer with California's largest teachers union.

The couple said they arrived on Wednesday with hopes - however slim - that they might somehow make it in to Invesco to see Obama.

Instead, they say they're happy enough getting Obama T-shirts and buttons and the chance to meet other Obama supporters.

"We've met so many wonderful people," Gina Ellis said. "We've exchanged so many e-mails and phone numbers."
