Brandon Marshall's suspension has been reduced one game by the NFL.

The talk from the NFL office a couple of months back was Brandon Marshall better brace for an absence of four to eight games for his off-field conduct.

So the announcement Thursday that the Broncos receiver will miss only one game, plus another game check in fines, has to be considered a best-case scenario for the team and player.

Marshall will miss the Sept. 8 opener at Oakland but will be in uniform when Denver faces AFC West favorite San Diego on Sept. 14.

"I'm happy," Marshall said from Arizona, where the Broncos close their preseason schedule tonight. "I'm glad for the opportunity to be there for my teammates against the Chargers, a division rival. And I'm going to do my best Week 1 to stay physically and mentally up to par."

On Aug. 5, Marshall was assessed a three-game suspension under the NFL's code of conduct because of three arrests in a year. Commissioner Roger Goodell gave Marshall the ability to pare the penalty to two games if he stayed out of trouble and received counseling.

But Marshall returned to New York on Tuesday with his lawyer, Denver-based Harvey Steinberg, for an appeal hearing.

Steinberg presented the case for 21/2 hours before Harold Henderson, chairman of the NFL's management council executive committee. Goodell, based on Henderson's report, then arrived at the reduced penalty, which includes more than $52,000 in lost salary.

"This was a situation of looking at all the evidence, the entire situation with Mr. Marshall, the changes he's made and commitment he has, and all that came together," Steinberg said.

Marshall added it wasn't so much a case of selling himself to the league as "showing them who I am."

Steinberg criticized the NFL when the original suspension was announced for its handling of the matter. But he lauded its professionalism this time.

"I was happy that the NFL was willing to take a second hard and fair look at the situation and . . . resolved it in the fashion they did," he said. "I want to thank them for that."

Marshall will be barred from Broncos facilities beginning Saturday. He's eligible to return to the active roster Sept. 9.

All in all, the receiver expressed relief the experience is behind him and admitted that, while it has been tough, "It's time to get past this thing."

"Whenever you go through things, you can always take some positive out of it. This definitely has been an experience for me and I'm just glad my teammates have stuck behind me," Marshall said. "I can't ask for a better situation than Denver, and I want to spend my whole career here. It's an exciting time for me."

Great news for Broncos fans, and for Marshall. Now if he leaves that crazy woman alone, and stops the drunk driving he'll be OK. A big boost against the Chargers team that everybody and their brother has picked to win the division in a cake walk. I hope his presence on the field will prove to be a difference maker and the Broncos destroy the Chargers...and every team they face this season! GO BRONCOS!!!

I guess I was incorrect. I never thought they would make it just one? I'm glad, this time, to be wrong. Now we can see if "Merriman the gimp" can keep up. Man this was some of the best news I've heard all week. Oakland will be a "tune up" without Marshall. I feel we can handle Oakland without Brandon. San Diego, look out.

Games are won or lost on the lines, guys.
How did we fare last year at home, against San Diego, with Marshall in the lineup? He played, but didn't score. And we lost.
I agree with cjbrown's sentiments, but if we take San Diego in Invesco, it won't be because of a wideout.

Pigskin, the Broncos appear to be a much improved team over last year. Yes, it is preseason, but our 1st string on both sides of the ball were doing a good job. Cutler is on his game and I see a lot of points being scored this year. Marshall is our top WR and he and Cutler are in sinc with each other. Yes, I think he can make THAT much of a difference. But, we'll wait till that 2nd game is over and see where we're at.

Dave, don't pay any attention to the man. The majority of us are down with your posts. As for our discussion the other night, this news is perfect. The team doesn't lose Marshall for an extended amount of time, yet the punishment is just harsh enough to get him thinking that he needs to stay clean if he wants to play in the NFL. I really like the fact that he wants to play his entire career as a Bronco. BTW, Prime Time Deon just picked the Broncos to be the surprise team of the year in the NFL this year. (For whatever that is worth).

But I'm retiring from the studio in 2 weeks. Bill and Jim (instructors, also)will take over the studio. Free time to do my Bronco "homework", ha, ha. Marshall learned his lesson, I suspect. We dodged a bullet on this one. I feel that San Diego will feel his presence. I know Mile High will. It will be loud, I'm sure. I wish I could be there but I WILL be at the Denver/San Diego game, in San Diego. It's close and I drive there. Tired of dealing with the airports, anymore. What's nice is that Brandon will get to practice with the team for the game. I'M READY FOR PRIME TIME, DEON!

FTR, thanks for the moral support, brother. I don't sweat it. It's nice though, to have a portable laptop. I take it with me, darn near everywhere. I just don't take it to the Bronco bar during games. Don't need anything poured on it. Well, Denver has just gone through a major reevaluation, in my books. Some may not consider that Marshall is that much of a difference, but I beg to differ. This doesn't look like the same offense I saw from last year in preseason. We have new talent. We have a stronger running game, a stronger looking OL and a better WR in Royal (compared to Walker). Our D is improved and we haven't even seen them at full strength. Wait until Boss Bailey is in there. Champ just got back. Dre' is feeling more comfortable. Our DE's will be ok. Elvis said he will be in there. We have Robertson. Time to kick back, pop a beer (or a "pitcher", in my case) and let the good times roll. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!

As for the Traiters, I told Sam Adams the same thing, We could beat the Faide.., um, Trait, no wait, Haters, with or without Marshall. I know they always play well against us, but they are about to see a drastically improved team, over last year. They looked pathetic last week against Arizona. 1st, 2nd and 3rd string, all played horribly. They had better pull it together if they want to beat the Broncos. I'm not looking ahead. I bought a Bronco glass (cracked glass) to donate at the raffle at the Bronco bar on opening game night against the La Raid, no wait, the Oakland Trait, er, no wait, the Haters. One game at a time, one game at a time.

And not saying that Marshall is a Jerry Rice but I think Rice certainly made a difference in his time with the 49r's and Marshall can make the difference between an 11-5 and an 8-8 season.

I've never had that problem in San Diego. Not to say it couldn't happen, it's just that it never has, to this point. The fans are a little bit better behaved. Well, I'm done for the night. Busy morning and afternoon, tomorrow, then "game time". Be cool Bronco world.

Whoa, The_Man. Posting here is not some sign of a lack of life. I work, play in a band, and have a great relationship with my wife and children. Posting here is a matter of having something that entertains you. Football, and in particular, the Broncos, entertain me. That is what it is. Your words of hate seem ironic coming in a post in which you are criticizing a poster. And the fact you said what you said insinuates quite a bit. I enjoy communicating with other Bronco fans in this forum. I don't live in Denver. I live in the DFW area. So I get nothing but Cowboys coverage. I believe Dave is also somewhere other than Denver. I know for me, the 2 Denver papers online are my only source for up to date, detailed Bronco info. No one where I live gives 2 craps about the Broncos. So this medium is where I can come and talk about my interest. So rather than bash him, or anyone for that matter, be glad that people take happiness in something. The way the world is today, we need all we can get.

A good wake-up call for him and he seems to appreciate that the NFL is a privilege not a right as some people seem to think it is (Example: Javon Walker). I'm looking forward to a future with this guy. He said he wants to spend his career in Denver and I hope he doesn't ever leave because of greed by either side in contract talks.

Im glad Marshall only got one game any more could have been enough to kill the rest of the season. San Diego wont be the team everybody thinks they are the AFC West wont be the toughest division but it will be improved and 41-3 wins wont come easy. The AFC East is improving as well so it wont be so easy for the so called greatest team on earth or to ever play the game to sweep all six games from within the division.

OPETH72, couldn't have explained it any better, myself. When I'm between teaching classes, I read articles and post. With all of the kids back to school, our schedule at the studio has been altered. More time. Like you said, the RMN gives us more "up to date" info. He can bash all he wants. I can bash back. It's "easy" to talk smack online. As for tonight's game, I don't put much into it since our starters will all be taking the night off. But this gives us a chance to gauge our depth. The Cards manhandled the Traiters 1st string, last week. I don't know who Arizona is going to field? 1st String for awhile? Don't know. I hope they do. It gives us a better look at the quality of our backups.
Ling Ling, I never saw the Leno thing. Sounds hilarious.
Squatch, yeah, the AFC East, has grown up in the off-season. Jets have improved. Heck, even the Dolphins look better. Everyone won a game in preseason but the Pats. That tells you how much stock we can put into a preseason game. Well, gentlemen, it's been fun, but I'm going to leave the studio and head home, get cleaned up and head out to watch the game. Talk to all of you again, same bat time, same bat channel.
