BUS NO. 5031 -- Packed tightly with people on their way to Invesco Field, bus No. 5031 this afternoon was practically humming with excitement in anticipation of presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama's speech.

But few were beaming more than driver Derrick Thorne, one of 170 Denver Regional Transportation District bus drivers who were driving shuttle buses to and from the stadium.

"This is history, man," Thorne, 47, said. "I'm excited. This is something I'll tell my grand kids I was a part of."

Thorne said the week has been one of "high energy" so far, with today being the most vibrant.

Even passengers packed sardine-can tight on the 16th Street Mall shuttles he's driven this week joked with each other and smiled, he said.

"There's just a festive aura about it," he said.
