Regional scene: Volleyball coaches pick DU to win West

The University of Denver volleyball team was picked to finish first in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division this fall, according to a poll of league coaches.
Pioneers libero Kacie Wikierak was named the Sun Belt's preseason defensive player of the year along with a spot on the preseason all-conference team.
Middle Tennessee was picked to win the league's East crown. Florida International outside hitter Yarimar Rosa was named the preseason player of the year.
* Colorado School of Mines junior middle blocker Kaity Edmiston and Regis University senior middle blocker Liz Franz were named to the all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason volleyball team.
Mesa State senior middle blocker Jessica Bird and Adams State junior outside hitter Andrea Tuck were also named to the team.
FALCONS PICKED FIFTH The Air Force men's water polo team, ranked 16th in the nation, has been picked to finish fifth in the Western Water Polo Association this fall, according to a poll of league coaches.
The Falcons finished third in the WWPA last season. Loyola Marymount was picked to repeat as league champions.
JOHNSTON HONORED DU women's soccer forward Mariah Johnston was named to the national "Team of the Week" selected by TopDrawerSoccer.com after scoring game-winning goals last weekend against New Mexico and the University of Colorado.
* Former North Dakota high school and junior college coach Mark Graupe has been hired to serve as the video coordinator for the Colorado State men's basketball team.
* Former University of Colorado at Colorado Springs athlete Scott Hansen has been hired as the women's golf coach at Mesa State, replacing Butch Miller, who has chosen to concentrate on his duties as athletic director.
MILLER TIME Matt Miller recorded four hits and three RBI to spark the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 9-5 win Monday against the Tucson Sidewinders in a Pacific Coast League game at Security Service Field.
Cory Sullivan added three hits and two RBI for the Sky Sox.
* The PCL has ruled against making up a Sky Sox-Sidewinders game that was postponed Aug. 15 and was set to be played Wednesday. The game was scrapped after both teams were eliminated from the playoffs.
SMITH WINS Denver resident Matt Smith won the Steamboat Springs Triathlon, finishing Sunday's event (20-mile bike ride, 4-mile run, 3/4-mile swim) in 1 hour, 29 minutes, 14 seconds.
Boulder triathlete Lauren Ivison won the women's portion 1:42:43.
ULANSKI SIGNED Former DU athlete Kevin Ulanski has signed a contract to play for the Loveland-based Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League.
