SHERATON HOTEL DOWNTOWN – In an afternoon speech, Hillary Clinton called on women supporters to “work as hard for Barack Obama as you did for me,” warning that Republican John McCain would “turn back the clock” on issues important to Democratic women.

Clinton addressed more than 2,000 members of Emily's List, an organization that pushes for election of pro-choice Democratic women, on the 88th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in the United States.

“Your work is putting more cracks into that glass ceiling. One day it will completely shatter,” she said to loud applause.

She said Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, support issues of importance to Emily's List women, including freedom of choice on abortion and equal pay for equal work. McCain, though “my friend and colleague,” is on the opposite side, she said.

“Barack and Joe will champion the issues we care about. They will be there with us,” she said.

As for McCain: “He will turn back the clock.”

Clinton also praised Obama's wife, Michelle.

“I know a little about the White House,” she said. If the president has not taken the exact position an advocate favors, she said, “You call the first lady.

“With Michelle Obama, we're going to have someone who answers the phone,” Clinton said.
