MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL -- "American Idol" contestant-turned chart-topping rock star Chris Daughtry and his bandmates joined volunteers at Manual High School on Tuesday to assemble World Vision's AIDS caregiver kits.
On display: A giant AIDS ribbon made from 6.1 million pennies ($61,000) to represent lives lost to the disease since the last election.
Speaking were Sen. Tom Daschle, Nita Lowey, Princess Zulu of Zambia.
"I want to thank all of you for being here at the convention, ready to do something very unconventional. This is a good example of how American voters are ready to elect a candidate who will show leadership when it comes to issues of extreme poverty," Princess Zulu said.
Chris Daughtry and his band, as well as Daschle, helped pack the AIDS kits. Daughtry thanked the volunteers for their hard work to screams from teenage girls. He later posed for photos with fans inside the penny ribbon.
"Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies of AIDS," Daschle said. "With our actions today we are saving lives."
