He Said It

"He has the chance to get us in and out of plays. He'll have that all year."

Fairchild on senior quarterback Billy Farris, who has the freedom to call audibles, even though Sunday will be his first collegiate start.

Numbers Game

3 Rams' head coaches have won their first game on the CSU sideline. Fairchild, the 19th football coach in school history, is trying to join Jerry Wampfler, whose team won at New Mexico State 28-9 in 1970; Julius Wagner, whose squad defeated Wyoming 10-0 in 1942; and C.J. Griffith, whose team defeated Denver 56-5 in 1901.

Wide receivers Dion Morton and Rashaun Greer heard a lot of criticism from the Rams coaching staff during spring practice.

But head coach Steve Fairchild considers the two among the biggest surprises of preseason camp.

Which is why the juniors will be the starting wide receivers for Colorado State's season opener against Colorado.

"I just didn't see enough from the receivers," Fairchild said. "So I was a little critical and I was certainly hard on those guys in meetings. But they have certainly been impressive so far.

"The guys that were veterans in this program have stepped up. The first two to come to mind are Rashaun Greer - he's had a very good camp, he's been terrific - and Dion Morton. Last spring I wasn't sure how hard they would play."

Planning ahead

Fairchild says he won't script plays, but he definitely knows what he wants done in certain situations.

"We kind of know what we're going to do on third down and we know what we are going to do when we get into the red zone and those type of things," he said. "We'll have the 'what if' list if they are just dumping a bear front and start pressuring us. If, for some reason, they go to a 3-4 defense, we know exactly what we're going to.

"Everybody talks about calling a game. You don't call the game (that day), you do the bulk of that right now."
