Richardson: Denver’s selection no accident

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson says presidential politics and retail sales have plenty in common: It’s all about location, location, location.

Among the loudest messages this week’s Democratic National Convention will deliver comes from its Denver backdrop, Richardson said.

“The fact that the convention is being held in Denver is a message to Westerners that the Democratic Party (sees the West as) fertile ground for Democrats — that Democrats see Western states, Rocky Mountain states, as potential centers of support for the future, after having been Republican for so many years.

“The victory was when Denver snagged the convention,” he added.

One of the best-known Hispanic political figures in the country, Richardson has worked hard to raise the West’s profile within the Democratic Party. He runs a state that, like Colorado, is in play.

For Democrats to win in November, voters watching the convention from home must believe that the party can solve the nation’s problems, Richardson said.

Equally important, he added, is party unity.

The convention must show “that senators Obama and (Hillary Rodham) Clinton have erased their differences and are together,” Richardson said.
